{"id":245850,"date":"2021-05-25T12:15:17","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T17:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=245850"},"modified":"2021-05-25T07:37:09","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T12:37:09","slug":"fewer-canadian-us-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fewer-canadian-us-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Fewer Canadian women traveling to U.S. for abortion amid pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian women travel to the United States every year for &#8220;medically necessary&#8221; abortions paid for by their provincial governments, but amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of Canadian women coming to the United States for an abortion has been cut in half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7868372\/coronavirus-covid-pandemic-abortion-access-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data from the Ontario government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, between March 15, 2020, and April 31, 2021, Ontario\u2019s out-of-country medical program approved applications for 11 women to receive \u201cmedically necessary\u201d abortions in the United States. This number marks a significant drop compared to annual numbers for each of the previous five years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is unclear from the data whether the pandemic caused the drop, but the numbers shared by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7868372\/coronavirus-covid-pandemic-abortion-access-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show consistency across a five-year period until the pandemic hit: 33 women in 2014-2015, 26 women in 2015-2016, 20 women in 2016-2017, 25 women in 2017-2018, and 26 women in 2018-2019.\u00a0Ontario is the only Canadian province that maintains detailed data on out-of-country &#8220;medically necessary&#8221; abortions. Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland do not track that data, but Ontario&#8217;s numbers suggest an overall decline across the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a common misconception that abortion can be medically necessary to save the life of the mother or in cases of a poor prenatal diagnosis for the preborn baby. Even in the most high-risk pregnancies, there is no medical reason why the life of a preborn child must be directly and intentionally ended with an abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5TmomK2RB2A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-life doctors have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-never-solution-pregnancy-complications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made clear<\/a> the distinction between abortion and providing a pregnant mother with medical treatments that could tragically result in the loss of the baby. For example, chemotherapy could result in miscarriage, but the intention behind administering the treatment is the health of the mother and not the death of the child. Likewise, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/get-facts-straight-treating-ectopic-pregnancy-not-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ectopic pregnancy<\/a>, the surgical procedure of removing the Fallopian tube and preborn child is carried out to save the mother who could die without intervention; the baby is not intentionally killed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, most life-threatening pregnancy complications don&#8217;t occur until late in the pregnancy, and babies born as young as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/youngest-preemie-world-21-weeks-going-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21 weeks<\/a> have a small chance of surviving outside the womb with proper medical care. Inducing preterm labor to save a woman&#8217;s life is <em>not an abortion<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout a pregnancy, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-women-medical-emergencies-health-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numerous complications<\/a> can arise, from placenta previa to pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes, among many others, and none need to be &#8220;treated&#8221; with abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global News<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ontario does not collect data on the reasons <em>why<\/em> women are pursuing these \u201cmedically necessary\u201d abortions; however, the numbers typically represent cases in which a late-term abortion is claimed to be needed \u201cdue to a serious medical situation for the mother or fetus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-prenatal-diagnosis-leads-emotional-trauma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Studies: Abortion after a prenatal diagnosis leads to emotional trauma<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/aborting-prenatal-diagnosis-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poor prenatal diagnosis<\/a>, intentionally killing the child through abortion is an act of eugenics, not compassion. Parents who abort for a prenatal diagnosis suffer along with their babies.\u00a0A study from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-prenatal-diagnosis-leads-emotional-trauma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duke University<\/a>\u00a0found that women who abort after a prenatal diagnosis deemed \u201cincompatible with life\u201d report \u201csignificantly more despair, avoidance, and depression than women who continued the pregnancy.\u201d The same study showed that women who carry their babies to term report being emotionally prepared for their child\u2019s death and having a sense of gratitude and peace surrounding their child\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though fewer women are traveling to undergo abortions in the midst of the pandemic, the false narrative that abortion is healthcare and that it can be medically necessary continues to be propagated by Canadian and American pro-abortion groups, putting women\u2019s health in jeopardy and resulting in the tragic loss of life of preborn children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News
