{"id":245846,"date":"2021-05-25T17:26:57","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T22:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=245846"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:14:30","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:14:30","slug":"sex-selective-abortions-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-selective-abortions-india\/","title":{"rendered":"13.5 million girls killed in sex-selective abortions in India from 1987 to 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/13-5-million-sex-selective-abortions-in-india-between-1987-and-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) &#8212; A paper published last month by a leading medical journal estimated that 13.5 million or more baby girls were aborted in sex-selective abortions in India between 1987 and 2016.<\/p>\n<div id=\"news_post_content\" class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_3_4 et_pb_column_0_tb_body et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_post_content et_pb_post_content_0_tb_body\">\n<p>While India\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgdev.org\/event\/banning-sex-selective-abortion-india-evidence-policy-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outlawed<\/a>\u00a0sex-selective abortion in 1994, it has remained a common practice and it is responsible for approximately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/action\/showPdf?pii=S2214-109X%2821%2900094-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fifty percent<\/a>\u00a0of the world\u2019s \u201cmissing female births\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/action\/showPdf?pii=S2214-109X%2821%2900094-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0that they may have underestimated the \u201ctrue extent\u201d of missing female births by applying the conservative natural ratio of 950 girls per 1,000 boys. When they tested a ratio of 975 girls per 1000 boys, they calculated over 22 million missing girls at birth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A \u201cdaughter averse\u201d culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India is thought to have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2020\/aug\/21\/selective-abortion-in-india-could-lead-to-68m-fewer-girls-being-born-by-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">63 million fewer<\/a>\u00a0women since sex-determination tests took off in the 1970s and research suggests India will have an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2020\/aug\/21\/selective-abortion-in-india-could-lead-to-68m-fewer-girls-being-born-by-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a>\u00a06.8 million fewer female births by 2030 because of the popularity of sex-selective abortions.<\/p>\n<p>Potential explanations for this include cultural\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/global\/2013\/01\/04\/indians-support-gender-equality-but-still-give-men-edge-in-workplace-higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attitudes<\/a>\u00a0that prioritise boys\u2019 education, due to the perception that they are the main breadwinners, and the (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/jun\/05\/take-a-stand-indian-families-returning-dowries-dahez-roko-abhiyan-campaign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outlawed<\/a>) practice of dowries for girls, which in turn brand women as socio-economic burdens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZtC-C8hw_7A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The impact of wealth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This latest study found that sex-selective abortions\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/action\/showPdf?pii=S2214-109X%2821%2900094-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most often<\/a>\u00a0impact girls in families who already have daughters. Families who already had one or two daughters were very unlikely to have a third, with the ratio of boys to girls born to families with two daughters at 788 to 1,000 in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The wealthiest families were also often the most likely to undergo sex-selective abortions. The paper concluded that \u201cmissing female births were more common in the richest wealth quintile and among women with higher literacy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The selective abortion of girls\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/langlo\/article\/PIIS2214-109X(21)00094-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributes<\/a>\u00a0\u201cto an excess of men who would like to find a partner but are unable to, and increasing violence against women\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They also suggest that \u201cevidence-based strategies\u201d such as inheritance laws that do not discriminate against women, and an emphasis on effectively implementing existing laws of policies, are urgently needed. \u201cWithout a reduction in sex-selective abortion, the demographic distortion might have repercussions for decades\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sex-selective abortion: a global issue\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sex-selective abortion is a well-documented issue around the world, resulting in highly skewed sex ratios. Since amending its abortion law in 1998, sex-selective abortions have become a major issue in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3281173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describes<\/a>\u00a0how \u201c[e]asy access to abortion and advances in prenatal sex determination have combined to make Canada a haven for parents who would terminate female fetuses in favour of having sons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/sex-selective-abortions-in-india-could-lead-to-the-abortion-of-5-million-girls-over-the-next-decad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence<\/a>\u00a0of sex-selective abortions has been found in the Australian territory of Victoria, which introduced abortion on request in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s \u201cOne Child Policy\u201d, which was officially eased in 2015,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2013\/may\/06\/chinas-barbaric-one-child-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permitted<\/a>\u00a0coerced sterilisation and abortion. Traditional values that favoured male children led to the mass abandonment or infanticide of female babies. Hundreds of millions of forced abortions were performed, sometimes at over eight months gestation. China consequently boasts the world\u2019s most uneven sex\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/282119\/china-sex-ratio-by-age-group\/#:~:text=Gender%20imbalance,100%20females%20as%20of%202019.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ratio<\/a>\u00a0at birth of around 114 males born for every 100 females.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sex-selective abortion in the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 2014 investigation by The Independent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/lost-girls-illegal-abortion-widely-used-some-uk-ethnic-groups-avoid-daughters-has-reduced-female-population-between-1-500-and-4-700-9059790.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cin two-child families of some first-generation immigrants, having elder daughters significantly increases the chances of the second child being male \u2013 an imbalance in the sex ratio that should not occur naturally\u201d. It went on to suggest that this could be due to sex-selective abortions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/undercover-tapes-show-planned-parenthood-aborting-girls-based-on-their-sex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Undercover tapes show Planned Parenthood aborting girls based on their sex<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/stopgendercide.org\/#investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC investigation<\/a>\u00a0published in September 2018 revealed evidence that the new NIPT (non-invasive pre-natal testing) provision was being used on a widespread basis to determine the sex of babies, with women discussing that they were under intense pressure to undergo sex-selective abortions.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a body of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldbioethics.org\/assets\/pdfs\/NIPT-ethical-issues-full-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first-hand testimonies<\/a>\u00a0from UK-resident women who say that they have come under intense pressure from family members to have sex-selective abortions and have gone on to obtain these abortions in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nuffieldbioethics.org\/assets\/pdfs\/NIPT-ethical-issues-full-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, a government advisory body, found a number of websites offering baby gender tests for around \u00a3170. In that report, the Council warned that the increasingly widespread use of the tests in the UK could lead to the country becoming a haven for sex-selective abortions.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/women\/womens-politics\/11428460\/Why-we-need-to-clarify-our-abortion-laws.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Telegraph<\/a>\u00a0revealed that doctors were agreeing to provide sex-selective abortions \u2018no questions asked\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/press-release-80-mp-candidates-sign-both-lives-pledge-since-launch-on-wednesday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Independent polling<\/a>\u00a0undertaken by Savanta ComRes shows that 89% of the general population and 91% of women agree that gender-selective abortion should be explicitly banned by the law.<\/p>\n<p>Jeena International, a charity supporting women from ethnic minority communities in the UK, said some women were forced into abortions because they became pregnant with a girl for a second or third time. The charity\u2019s founder, Rani Bilkhu,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/selective-abortions-gender-tests-girls-uk-labour-a8540851.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cThey don\u2019t want to be homeless, they don\u2019t want their marriage to fail \u2013 all because they couldn\u2019t give birth to a boy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK\u2019s spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said: \u201cIt is a tragedy that in such a self-professed age of progress, so many countries refuse to outlaw abortion based on the sex of the child in the womb.
