(Right to Life UK<\/a>) — A paper published last month by a leading medical journal estimated that 13.5 million or more baby girls were aborted in sex-selective abortions in India between 1987 and 2016.<\/p>\n

While India\u00a0outlawed<\/a>\u00a0sex-selective abortion in 1994, it has remained a common practice and it is responsible for approximately\u00a0fifty percent<\/a>\u00a0of the world\u2019s \u201cmissing female births\u201d.<\/p>\n

Researchers also\u00a0admitted<\/a>\u00a0that they may have underestimated the \u201ctrue extent\u201d of missing female births by applying the conservative natural ratio of 950 girls per 1,000 boys. When they tested a ratio of 975 girls per 1000 boys, they calculated over 22 million missing girls at birth.<\/p>\n

A \u201cdaughter averse\u201d culture<\/strong><\/p>\n

India is thought to have\u00a063 million fewer<\/a>\u00a0women since sex-determination tests took off in the 1970s and research suggests India will have an\u00a0estimated<\/a>\u00a06.8 million fewer female births by 2030 because of the popularity of sex-selective abortions.<\/p>\n

Potential explanations for this include cultural\u00a0attitudes<\/a>\u00a0that prioritise boys\u2019 education, due to the perception that they are the main breadwinners, and the (outlawed<\/a>) practice of dowries for girls, which in turn brand women as socio-economic burdens.<\/p>\n
