{"id":245566,"date":"2021-05-20T17:38:06","date_gmt":"2021-05-20T22:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=245566"},"modified":"2021-05-20T15:07:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T20:07:00","slug":"biden-abortion-us-more-extreme-nations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-abortion-us-more-extreme-nations\/","title":{"rendered":"Writer wants Biden to &#8216;go big&#8217; on abortion, but US already more extreme than most nations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday, May 10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Monthly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonmonthly.com\/2021\/05\/10\/why-biden-needs-to-go-big-on-abortion\/#.YJmWo4wRB1A.twitter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opinion piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Emily Crockett entitled, \u201cWhy Biden Needs to Go Big on Abortion.\u201d It\u2019s little more than a jumble of factual inaccuracies, distortions, and pro-abortion propaganda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Factual Inaccuracies<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crockett claims the abortion pill &#8220;is safer than Tylenol\u201d (an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cecile-richards-abortion-pill-safer\/\">assertion<\/a> made by <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-not-tylenol-parents-know-minors\/\">other<\/a> abortion advocates) and claims Lipitor and Flonase are \u201cless safe.\u201d These are perhaps the most glaring outright falsehoods in her piece. Tylenol, Flonase, and Lipitor are medicines designed and intended to treat illness; the abortion pill, on the other hand, is designed and intended to kill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not treat illness, because pregnancy is not a disease. Indeed, the abortion pill regimen is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not medicine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Crockett further bemoans the fact that the abortion pill is \u201cmore heavily regulated than fentanyl.\u201d One cannot help but wonder whether Crockett would analogously argue that other things people might use to harm or kill others (like certain weapons, for instance) should be de-regulated. After all, this would be the only logically and morally consistent stance for her to take.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRDnVSMr5j0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crockett also contends that Rep. Henry Hyde \u2014 after whom the Hyde Amendment, which blocks most public funding for abortion, was named \u2014 \u201copenly admitted that his measure targeted poor women.\u201d To support this claim, she cites an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/women\/news\/2013\/05\/10\/62875\/how-the-hyde-amendment-discriminates-against-poor-women-and-women-of-color\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Progress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> piece which quotes Rep. Hyde as saying: \u201cI certainly would like to prevent, if I could legally, <\/span><b>anybody<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having an abortion, a rich woman, a middle-class woman, or a poor woman \u2026 Unfortunately, the only vehicle available is the \u2026 Medicaid bill\u201d (emphasis added). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Rep. Hyde\u2019s candor regarding his wish that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortions be eliminated can possibly be construed as an admission of an agenda against the poor is rather baffling \u2014 but so is the \u201clogic\u201d that eliminating poor and minority children is somehow socially just.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dubious Distortions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crockett plays fast and loose with the truth throughout her piece. For example, she maintains that many abortion \u201cpatients\u201d (language that is, in and of itself, a distortion, since, as previously stated, pregnancy is not an illness) are \u201cforced\u201d to \u201cendure humiliations like forced ultrasounds [and] medically inaccurate anti-abortion \u2018counseling.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ultrasound before a surgical abortion is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-ultrasound-except-using-find-fetal-organs\/\">largely standard<\/a> based on the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/uog.3945\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the abortionist, who needs to know gestational age for both cost and procedure type. Many abortion practice<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guidelines<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29408754\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the use of ultrasound for the safety of the woman. The actual abortion procedure \u2014 which, if surgical, is intensely invasive, or, if chemical, generally requires a woman to flush her baby down the toilet alone at home \u2014 is far more \u201chumiliating\u201d than any ultrasound. The only person \u201chumiliated\u201d by a mere ultrasound is someone who prefers to believe a lie about what, exactly, they are aborting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cpdY97GOK2I\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/late-term-abortionist-mangled-patients-babies-traumatized\/\">Late-term abortionist \u2018mangled\u2019 two patients and their babies so badly that ER staff were traumatized<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the assertion that the counseling many women must receive prior to abortion is \u201cmedically inaccurate\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s telling that Crockett doesn\u2019t provide a single example or piece of evidence to support her claim. Crockett also contends that \u201cconservatives are more than happy\u201d to use \u201cdisinformation\u2026 to justify banning or restricting abortion,\u201d but again fails to substantiate or elaborate upon her statement, instead linking to a pro-abortion\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rewire<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rewirenewsgroup.com\/false-witnesses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smear piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is itself full of disinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, Crockett cites two dubiously derived statistics. First, she claims that six in 10 Americans support Medicaid funding for abortion. But this statistic comes from a 2019<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/allaboveall.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ME-12724-AllAboveAll-release-Sept26-1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by a research organization with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/hartresearch.com\/clients\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Planned Parenthood and the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bill-gates-funder-abortion-lockdown-restaurants-save\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. A more recent (2021)<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/poll-strong-majority-of-americans-back-the-hyde-amendment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marist poll,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the other hand, found that the exact same margin \u2014 6 in 10 \u2014 oppose the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion. In 2019, pro-abortion Slate writer William Saletan <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/polls-majority-women-dont-want-taxpayer-abortion\/\">admitted<\/a> that taxpayer-funded abortion is unpopular across the board, even among women, writing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>Respondents support \u201cbanning federal funding for abortion\u201d except in rape cases or to save the woman\u2019s life (<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=0000016b-4360-dc80-a3ff-f37c33ee0000\">Politico\/Morning Consult<\/a><i>, 2019). They believe that \u201cgovernment health insurance programs for low-income women, like Medicaid,\u201d should not \u201ccover abortion\u201d (<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prri.org\/research\/young-people-set-to-impact-the-debate-on-womens-health-issues\/\">PRRI<\/a><i>, 2018). They oppose \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kofc.org\/un\/en\/resources\/communications\/kofc-marist-poll-national-nature-sample-tables2017.pdf\">using tax dollars to\u00a0pay for a woman\u2019s abortion<\/a><\/i><em>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kofc.org\/un\/en\/resources\/communications\/american-attitudes-abortion-knights-of-columbus-marist-poll-slides.pdf\">Marist<\/a>, 2019). They oppose allowing \u201cMedicaid funds to be used to pay for abortions\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000158-039b-d881-adda-77db04b70000\">Politico\/Harvard<\/a>, 2016). When they\u2019re told that \u201cthe Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funds from being used to fund abortions, except in the case of incest, rape or to save the life of the mother,\u201d they endorse the amendment (<a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2016\/08\/12\/taxation-and-morality\">YouGov<\/a>, 2016). <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>These polls aren\u2019t close. The average gap between the pro-funding and anti-funding positions is 19 percentage points.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, Crockett states that seven in 10 Americans support legal abortion. This<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/report-section\/abortion-knowledge-and-attitudes-kff-polling-and-policy-insights-methodology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statistic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like its predecessor, is taken from a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/family-members-die-legal-abortion-not-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> source: the Kaiser Family Foundation. What Crockett omits, and what even the poll she cites mentions, is that most Americans support significant<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/01\/new-poll-most-americans-support-abortion-restrictions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restrictions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on abortion. In fact, according to the previously-cited 2021 Marist poll, \u201cA slim majority of respondents said abortion either shouldn\u2019t be permitted at all or should be legal only in cases where a mother\u2019s life is in danger or when she has been the victim of rape or incest.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is hardly the picture of the vastly pro-abortion populace Crockett describes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Plainly Propagandic<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these issues alone didn\u2019t mark this piece as propaganda, the rhetoric employed by the author surely seals the deal. The title alone is a glaring example: how can Biden \u201cgo bigger\u201d on abortion than this country already does? The U.S. is one of only<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/wp\/2017\/10\/09\/is-the-united-states-one-of-seven-countries-that-allow-elective-abortions-after-20-weeks-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world that allows elective abortions up to birth. Seven. Four of the others are totalitarian regimes and\/or dictatorships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uCX-tLqETpk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crockett also complains that Biden hasn\u2019t used the word \u201cabortion\u201d in public since taking office, writing that this \u201creinforces the social stigma that considers \u2018abortion\u2019 a dirty word instead of basic health care and a human right\u2026\u201d Well, perhaps Crockett hasn&#8217;t seen that it&#8217;s now preferential to refer to abortion as &#8220;reproductive justice&#8221; or &#8220;reproductive rights&#8221; instead of &#8220;abortion.&#8221; There are so many euphemisms for killing preborn children, one could be forgiven for not knowing which is the current order of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAbortion\u201d may not be a dirty word, but it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a dirty deed \u2014 it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kills someone, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/family-members-die-legal-abortion-not-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sometimes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kills the so-called \u201cpatient\u201d as well. If there is \u201csocial stigma\u201d around abortion, perhaps that\u2019s the reason why. Furthermore, any \u201cprocedure\u201d which kills a human being can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be deemed \u201chealth care\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201chuman right.\u201d To use such terms to describe a violent procedure which never cures and always kills is pure propaganda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So yes, there <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a reason for President Biden to be \u201cso shy\u201d about beating the abortion drum, contrary to Crockett\u2019s assertions. A majority of Americans <em>do not<\/em> support the measures she proposes, nor do most Americans relish glibly discussing the grisly murder of innocent children.
