The bill now heads to the North Carolina House of Representatives. This legislation, which passed by a vote of 28-21, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba-list.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/pro-life-victory-nc-senate-passes-protections-for-babies-born-alive-onward-to-house\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure that babies accidentally born alive during abortions are given the same medical treatment that any premature infant born at the same age would receive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar bill that passed the state legislature with bipartisan support was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/house-fails-to-override-cooper-s-veto-of-abortion-bill\/18434139\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vetoed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019 by Democrat Governor Roy Cooper. He defended his decision saying that legal protections for born-alive survivors caused \u201cunnecessary interference between doctors and their patients\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/five-state-reports-one-hundred-born-alive-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falsely claimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the bill would &#8220;criminalize doctors and other health care providers for a practice that simply does not exist.&#8221; At the time, the North Carolina House fell five votes short of overriding Cooper\u2019s veto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/babies-born-alive-abortions-continue\/\">at least 143 children<\/a> were born alive during abortions between 2003 and 2014. Their fate is unknown. The CDC noted that this could be an underestimation, and only <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/five-state-reports-one-hundred-born-alive-abortion\/\">some states<\/a> choose to report statistics on infants born alive during abortions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/five-state-reports-one-hundred-born-alive-abortion\/\">Reports from just five states reveal over 100 babies born alive during abortions in recent years<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican State Senator <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wral.com\/14549734\/?ncga_id=100\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joyce Krawiec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who sponsored the 2019 version and the bill that passed on Wednesday, said S.B. 405 is about legally ensuring newborns are treated as human beings after the abortion is botched. &#8220;By all definitions, [they&#8217;re] a living, breathing human being \u2013 a person, a citizen,&#8221; Krawiec said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill affirms that infants born alive after botched abortions have the &#8220;the same claim to the protection of the law that would arise for any newborn,&#8221; which would require that medical staff &#8220;exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democrat state Senator <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wral.com\/14549734\/?ncga_id=284\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natalie Murdock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> repeated the false claim that babies born alive after botched abortions is a nonexistent occurrence and not \u201can actual problem that exists in the state.\u201d She reduced the bill to a Republican attempt to &#8220;demonize and stigmatize&#8221; abortionists and women seeking to abort their children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act is also expected to pass in the state House, which recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bill-down-syndrome-abortions-nc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Human Life Non-Discrimination Act (H.B. 453).
