{"id":245206,"date":"2021-05-13T07:46:46","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T12:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=245206"},"modified":"2021-05-12T23:13:08","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T04:13:08","slug":"uk-expands-abortion-animals-sentient-beings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-expands-abortion-animals-sentient-beings\/","title":{"rendered":"UK government expands abortion while seeking to recognize animals as sentient beings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While vulnerable wildlife creatures certainly deserve protection, it does not make sense for governments to put the lives of animals before preborn human beings.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/may\/12\/animals-to-be-formally-recognised-as-sentient-beings-in-uk-law\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the government of the United Kingdom announced plans on May 12 to recognize animals as sentient human beings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report, the new legislation that the UK Department for Environment, Food &amp; Rural Affairs is pushing for will also include a \u201crange of new game changing welfare measures to protect pets, livestock and wild animals.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These measures include a ban on remote-controlled dog collars and the sale of ivory and shark fins. The legislation also prohibits mandates that enforce microchipping on cats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are a nation of animal lovers and were the first country in the world to pass animal welfare laws,\u201d said George Eustice, the UK\u2019s environment secretary.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur action plan for animal welfare will deliver on our manifesto commitment to ban the export of live animal exports for slaughter and fattening, prohibit keeping primates as pets, and bring in new laws to tackle puppy smuggling.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>James West of animal rights activist group Compassion in World <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/farming\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Farming<\/a>, said, \u201cWe have long been calling for UK legislation that recognises animals as sentient beings and for sentience to be given due regard when formulating and implementing policy&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the humane treatment of animals is important, why is the UK moving forward with legislation to protect animals before taking action to stop abortion on human beings?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is the UK rushing to increase and expand abortion in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/united-kingdom-rushes-expand-abortion-northern-ireland\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Ireland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 against the pro-life country\u2019s wishes \u2013 the abortion numbers in the UK are as shocking as they are disheartening.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/press-release-abortion-stats-published-rate-highest-in-10-years\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right to Life UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the region reportedly committed 205,295 abortions in 2018, which is a 10-year high. In England and Wales, that number was 200,608, the highest ever recorded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/torturing-animals-illegal-torturing-children-womb-not-much\/\">Torturing animals is illegal. Torturing children in the womb? Not so much.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional figures show that 78,988 were repeat abortions, an 11% increase from what they were in 2016. There were also 3,269 disability-selective abortions in 2018. Of the children who were aborted, 618 had Down syndrome, while 15 of them were aborted for a cleft lip\/palate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pro-life organization reported that the abortion increase is likely the result of abortionists at private facilities pressuring more women to abort their pregnancies. It also cited a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/care-quality-commission\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Care Quality Commission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report that alleged Marie Stopes International employees receive bonuses for persuading more women to choose abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is a national tragedy that 205,295 lives were lost to abortion in 2018,\u201d said Right to Life UK spokesperson, Clare McCarthy.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2026Proposals from abortion campaigners to remove legal restrictions around abortion and introduce abortion right to birth would likely see these numbers get even worse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are calling on the Government to urgently bring forward sensible new restrictions and increased support for women with unplanned pregnancies,\u201d she added. \u201cThis would ensure we were working together as a society to reduce the tragic number of abortions that happen each year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is admirable that the UK government would want to protect animals from unnecessary harm.
