Thankfully, doctors were able to stop labor, but she was admitted to The Birth Center at Wake Forest Baptist as staff tried to keep River in her womb for as long as possible. He was eventually born at just 25 weeks, weighing one pound, 11 ounces, and measuring smaller than the size of a Barbie doll.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fdavontemckenith%2Fposts%2F313966860095345&amp;width=500&amp;show_text=true&amp;height=669&amp;appId\" width=\"500\" height=\"669\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBabies like River, born at 25 weeks \u2013 almost 4 months early \u2013 can have a lot of complications,\u201d Corbin Downey, a neonatologist at Wake Forest Baptist, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wakehealth.edu\/News-Releases\/2021\/05\/Micro-Preemie-Goes-Home-Just-in-Time-for-Mothers-Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a hospital press release<\/a>. \u201cThis is because their organ systems, from their brain to their lungs, are not yet fully developed. These babies stay with us in the NICU for several months and it\u2019s very rewarding to watch them grow and conquer so many obstacles and then get strong enough to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Wilson was at the Dale and Karen Sisel NICU, a level IV NICU which has the tools and experience to care for preemies as young as 22 weeks. Premature babies face many medical challenges, but as medicine advances, they&#8217;ve been surviving at <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/youngest-preemie-world-21-weeks-going-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">younger and younger ages<\/a>, and are even more likely to make it if given <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-study-shows-that-up-to-71-of-premature-babies-can-survive-if-given-active-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">active care<\/a>\u00a0instead of just palliative care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exciting-research-lungs-lifesaving-preemies\/\">\u2018Exciting\u2019 new research on infants\u2019 lungs could make a lifesaving difference for preemies<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though River is strong and thriving now, he was so fragile at first that Wilson couldn&#8217;t even hold him; it was 32 days before that was possible. And it would ultimately take 169 days \u2014 almost six months \u2014 before the family could go home. \u201cFor 169 days, I stared out the NICU window and wondered when this day would actually happen,\u201d Wilson said in the press release. River wasn&#8217;t able to meet his two big sisters, Ridgely and Murphy, until he was able to go home, but the family&#8217;s reunion came at the perfect time. And when he left, the NICU nurses lined the hallways in celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis day has always felt so far away, but it\u2019s here now and it\u2019s the ultimate Mother\u2019s Day gift,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I remember when he was still in his incubator I would tell him we\u2019d see his discharge day, no matter what. The bonds that I have made with the staff here are just unbreakable.
