NARAL Pro-Choice America has named<\/a> Adrienne Kimmell as its new acting president, after longtime president Ilyse Hogue announced<\/a> her impending departure in February<\/a>. Kimmell presently serves as the organization’s Chief Research and Communications Officer and\u00a0formerly<\/a> worked with Planned Parenthood Federation of America as a legislative affairs manager, as well as with Planned Parenthood affiliates in Florida<\/a> and Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

“Adrienne Kimmell has been named Acting President. Adrienne has been on NARAL\u2019s senior leadership team for nearly four years as the Chief Research and Communications Officer, and will serve as Acting President until a permanent President is found to replace President Ilyse Hogue, whose last day will be May 28,” NARAL wrote<\/a> in its news release.<\/p>\n

Kimmell has actively attacked pro-life Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs) claiming<\/a> in 2018 that\u00a0the centers, which offer services for women and men completely free of charge<\/em> (i.e. parenting classes, STD testing, pregnancy testing, baby gear, furniture, diapers, clothing, maternity housing, employment assistance, referrals to other social services, and more), were\u00a0\u201cintentionally positioning themselves in or around Black neighborhoods.\u201d Whether this is true or not was unclear, as Kimmell offered no evidence for her assertions.<\/p>\n

However, Kimmell and NARAL have little to say about Black Americans’ claims of eugenic targeting<\/a> of minorities by the abortion industry. Kimmell is also likely well aware that two of NARAL\u2019s\u00a0three-member<\/a>\u00a0pre-formation planning committee were men who held and promoted radical racist, eugenicist ideas about population control and even advocated for coerced sterilization. Kimmell has also called<\/a> PRCs “fake,” accusing them of being deceptive. In fact, it is NARAL that has deceived the public entirely for decades \u2014 according to one of its own founders, former abortionist Bernard Nathanson.<\/p>\n

Nathanson admitted that he and others within NARAL (then known as the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws) disseminated a completely\u00a0fabricated statistic<\/a>\u00a0claiming thousands or tens of thousands of women were dying from\u00a0illegal abortions<\/a>\u00a0each year when this was not the case. They did this to sway popular opinion in order to decriminalize abortion prior to the Supreme Court\u2019s\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/a>\u00a0decision.<\/p>\n

The deception worked.<\/p>\n

That\u00a0lie<\/a>\u00a0was successfully used to persuade lawmakers to rule in favor of legalized abortion. In the end, women\u2019s lives have remained\u00a0in peril<\/a>, as many have now\u00a0died<\/a>\u00a0or been injured from\u00a0legal<\/em>\u00a0abortion. On this, NARAL and Kimmell are silent.<\/p>\n

“NARAL<\/span> is in great hands with [Kimmell] until the baton is passed,” Hogue tweeted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>“With her leadership and that of…<\/span>so many others across the organization, membership and Board, I am so excited for the future of this amazing team.”<\/span><\/p>\n

NARAL’s leadership change follows allegations<\/a>\u00a0from former staffers of the organization’s\u00a0\u201cwhite feminism<\/a>.\u201d NARAL has long\u00a0defended<\/a>\u00a0Planned Parenthood\u2019s white supremacist founder Margaret Sanger.<\/p>\n

But if change is what NARAL’s employees want, Kimmell hasn’t signaled this will be the case. In fact, in response to the announcement, Kimmell vowed to continue Hogue’s “vision,” tweeting<\/a>, “Some personal news (as they say) – so grateful for <\/span>@ilyseh<\/a><\/span>‘s vision and leadership and excited to continue our important work advancing reproductive freedom with the amazing Team <\/span>@NARAL<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in this transition period”<\/p>\n

NARAL employees previously lashed out against Hogue’s “vision” for the organization, and publicly\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0the organization of racism, telling\u00a0Buzzfeed News<\/a>\u00a0that Black and Brown staffers at NARAL \u201cfelt tokenized\u201d \u00a0and said the organization has a \u201crace equity and inclusivity problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alleged former NARAL\u00a0staffers<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0interns<\/a>\u00a0later\u00a0emerged<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter to confirm the toxic working conditions at the abortion rights organization.\u00a0In a\u00a0series of tweets<\/a>, one former NARAL staffer stated, \u201cAfter repeatedly calling the org in for racism\/classism\/transphobia\u00a0NARAL leadership began began extensively surveilling my social media and community activism and tracking it in private group chats.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, in announcing its leadership change, NARAL now claims it has a “commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion” and will implement these virtues in its “search for a permanent president.”<\/p>\n

Regardless of the leader NARAL eventually selects, the organization’s eugenicist history and present racism issues are significant.<\/p>\n
