{"id":244166,"date":"2021-04-29T17:37:29","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T22:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=244166"},"modified":"2021-04-29T00:18:38","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T05:18:38","slug":"wife-divorcing-disabled-husband-dehydration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wife-divorcing-disabled-husband-dehydration\/","title":{"rendered":"Wife in process of divorcing disabled husband seeks to end his life by dehydration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/lifelegaldefensefoundation.org\/disabled-man-targeted-for-torturous-death\/?fbclid=IwAR1aNyhfN2IUccFpSbUBNueeoRu3jxha14611dpLMftrqIYD1UwFnzgiX7s\">Life Legal<\/a>)\u00a0The wife of a brain-injured man in Louisiana is determined to dehydrate him to death by removing his nutrition and hydration.\u00a0The euphemism for this\u00a0barbaric\u00a0treatment is \u201ccomfort care.\u201d\u00a0It used to be reserved for true end-of-life situations where a person\u00a0with a terminal illness had only hours to live and\u00a0could no longer assimilate\u00a0food and water.<\/p>\n<p>Today, however, \u201ccomfort care\u201d is routinely imposed on disabled,\u00a0but\u00a0otherwise healthy,\u00a0people\u00a0\u2014 without\u00a0their consent.<\/p>\n<p>Joshua Barras suffered a brain injury over two years ago after a tragic, drug-induced suicide attempt.\u00a0He is responsive and can be seen smiling and even singing in videos. He can breathe on his own and is not on a ventilator, but he\u00a0does require\u00a0a feeding tube for nutrition and hydration.\u00a0He is\u00a0in excellent health and is\u00a0being cared for in a long-term home for people with brain injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Still, his wife insists that he be made dead.\u00a0Last month we were successful in obtaining a court\u00a0order mandating that Joshua continue to receive the care he needs, including food and water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-man-coma-dehydrated-death\/\">Non-terminally ill UK man kept in a coma and denied food and water has died<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joshua\u2019s wife is on a mission to end his life. She even appeared on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drphil.com\/videos\/woman-at-odds-with-daughter-in-law-about-health-of-her-son-claims-daughter-in-law-is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Dr. Phil show<\/a>\u00a0to make the case for killing her husband.\u00a0What she forgot to mention is that\u00a0she and Joshua were going through a divorce\u00a0at the time of his\u00a0injury\u00a0and\u00a0that\u00a0she is in another relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Joshua\u2019s mother, Kelly Barras, reached out to Bobby Schindler, sister of Terri Schiavo and President\/Founder of the Terri Schiavo Life and Hope Network. Bobby called Life Legal for\u00a0help\u00a0and we contacted a local attorney who is representing Kelly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/speeches\/2004\/march\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_spe_20040320_congress-fiamc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pope John Paul II addressed<\/a>\u00a0the provision of nutrition and hydration to\u00a0people with brain injuries\u00a0individuals in response to efforts by Terri Schiavo\u2019s husband to\u00a0dehydrate and starve her to death.\u00a0Pope John Paul II\u00a0made it clear\u00a0that \u201cthe administration of\u00a0water and food, even when provided by artificial means, always represents a\u00a0<em>natural means\u00a0<\/em>of preserving life,\u00a0not a\u00a0<em>medical act<\/em><em>,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>and emphasized that food and water is ordinary care,<em>\u00a0\u201c<\/em>and as such\u00a0morally obligatory\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This teaching has\u00a0been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/issues-and-action\/human-life-and-dignity\/end-of-life\/euthanasia\/upload\/q-a-nutrition-and-hydration-patients-vegetative-state.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reaffirmed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is unfathomable that 16 years after the\u00a0horrific\u00a0killing of Terri Schiavo a young man like Joshua Barras could be targeted for death solely because of his disability.\u00a0In any other context, death by dehydration and starvation is a crime against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>We strongly encourage people to execute an advance directive to express their wishes regarding medical care and treatment in the event they become incapacitated.
