WashPo op-ed tries to downplay undeniable link between abortion and eugenics"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Abortion is another form of racial injustice, due in part to its deep roots in the eugenics movement. Just as the racism of Margaret Sanger and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-suspicion-black-genocide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood<\/a> was covered-up for decades, abortion defenders are now trying to rewrite and cover up the strong historical link between abortion and eugenics. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/04\/18\/new-racialized-assault-abortion-rights-is-headed-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post op-ed<\/a>\u00a0by New York University Law Professor Melissa Murray claimed that &#8220;[t]he association of abortion with eugenics and genocide&#8221; and by extension, <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, are only &#8220;<em>supposedly<\/em> rooted in and tainted by racial injustice&#8221; (emphasis added).\u00a0Murray then floated this false conspiracy (with zero evidence): &#8220;The effort to link abortion with eugenics and deracination is part of a longer-range strategy to destabilize and eventually overrule\u00a0<i>Roe.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Murray wrote the piece as a response to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/justice-clarence-thomas-abortion-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assertions<\/a>\u00a0that states\u00a0have a \u201ccompelling interest in preventing abortion from becoming a tool of modern-day eugenics.\u201d In his writing, Thomas accurately implicated Planned Parenthood\u2019s founder and leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Murray&#8217;s piece was published one day after Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill Johnson made a weak attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-ceo-condemnation-sanger-hollow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distance<\/a> her racist organization from its white supremacist, eugenicist founder Margaret Sanger.\u00a0Now that Sanger has finally become toxic to many pro-abortion groups, abortion defenders like Murray appear to be attempting to rescue legal abortion from being canceled along with Sanger.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, abortion advocates must attempt to untether abortion from eugenics&#8230; but the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/look-2020-racism-white-supremacy-abortion-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">truth<\/a> always comes out.<\/p>\n<p><b>Margaret Sanger did not just &#8220;cite&#8221; eugenics &#8211; she <em>was<\/em> a eugenicist<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Murray wrote, &#8220;Margaret Sanger spearheaded the birth control movement and, in the 1920s and 1930s, <em>cited<\/em> eugenics theory to expand contraceptive access. However, Sanger did not favor abortion, which she viewed as distasteful&#8221; (emphasis added).<\/p>\n<p>This is only <em>partly<\/em> true.<\/p>\n<p>It is well documented that Planned Parenthood&#8217;s founder was an avowed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/14\/hillary-clinton-praises-racist-margaret-sanger-founder-of-planned-parenthood\/\">eugenicist<\/a>\u00a0who even accepted an invitation to speak to the Ku Klux Klan, something Sanger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ia802607.us.archive.org\/1\/items\/margaretsangerau1938sang\/margaretsangerau1938sang.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a>\u00a0in her autobiography. She held such a strong belief in eugenics that she embedded eugenics proponents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-connections-to-eugenics\/\">deeply within her organization<\/a>.\u00a0The organizations Sanger founded (the American Birth Control League and Planned Parenthood) both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-connections-to-eugenics\/\">have ties to eugenics proponents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1919, Sanger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/projects\/sanger\/webedition\/app\/documents\/show.php?sangerDoc=143449.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a>, &#8220;Before eugenists and others who are laboring for racial betterment can succeed, they must first clear the way for Birth Control\u2026.&#8221; Then, in\u00a01921, Sanger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/projects\/sanger\/webedition\/app\/documents\/show.php?sangerDoc=238946.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proclaimed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe campaign for birth control is not merely of eugenic value, but is practically <strong>identical in ideal with the final aim of eugenics<\/strong>.\u201d (emphasis added)<\/p>\n<p>In 1938, Sanger <a href=\"https:\/\/lifedynamics.com\/app\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1938-04-April.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set up<\/a> a \u201cCommittee on Planned Parenthood.\u201d Her eugenic philosophy not only fed her work within Planned Parenthood and the birth control movement, but also her lesser known <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/legacy-of-death-abortion-eugenics-euthanasia-groups-shared-board-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocacy<\/a> of euthanasia.\u00a0She was more than just a passive observer where eugenics was concerned; she\u00a0was a member of the American Eugenics Society and tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sangers-eugenics-efforts-hallmark-of-planned-parenthoods-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unite<\/a> her efforts and her publication <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-margaret-sanger-spoke-ku-klux-klan-supported-eugenics-organization-still-honor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with<\/a> the eugenics movement.<\/p>\n<p>But Murray is correct on one point: while Sanger preferred eugenic sterilization, she was <em>not<\/em> an outspoken advocate of abortion.\u00a0Sanger, a nurse by trade, had witnessed the horrors of illegal abortion, and her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-planned-parenthood-abortion-corporation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposition<\/a> to abortion was due in part to the risks it posed to women&#8217;s lives. However, Sanger was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-planned-parenthood-abortion-corporation\/\">not necessarily<\/a> <em>opposed<\/em> to abortion, but instead focused on eugenic sterilization and birth control, which she saw as more effective at that time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is not &#8220;misleading&#8221; to link abortion to eugenics &#8211; it is historical fact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Murray wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In Thomas\u2019s telling, the disproportionate incidence of abortion among Black women today is the contemporary residue of the early eugenic movement\u2019s efforts to target the Black community&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8230;Thomas\u2019s linking of abortion to a racist history of eugenics, <strong>although misleading<\/strong>, lays the foundation for concluding that racial injustice provides that \u201cspecial justification\u201d for overruling\u00a0Roe.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Misleading&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>The racist and eugenic agenda of abortion was not overlooked by Black leaders like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dick-gregory-government-funded-abortion-birth-control-programs-equals-genocide-blacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dick Gregory<\/a>, H. Rap Brown, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/black-pro-life-women-abortion-genocide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fannie Lou Hamer<\/a>, who all\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-past-targeting-black-happening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">labeled<\/a> abortion \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-falsely-dismisses-abortion-black-genocide-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black genocide.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0Others in the Black community identified abortion as \u201cclass war against the poor,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling<\/a> abortion a form of \u201cnew slavery\u201d and &#8220;a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-falsely-dismisses-abortion-black-genocide-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racist weapon<\/a> of genocide against Black people\u201d to prune &#8220;the Black race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unearthed-pamphlet-planned-parenthood-black-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denounced<\/a> taxpayer-funded abortion as being\u00a0\u201c[p]ut forth as a solution for the poor.\u201d Early abortion proponents had deep-rooted ties to eugenics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between &#8220;positive&#8221; and &#8220;negative&#8221; eugenics, negative usually won out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Murray wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Indeed, as much as the campaign to expand birth control relied on eugenics, the 19th-century effort to criminalize and regulate abortion took a different tack, trading on nativist fears that abortion was suppressing the White birthrate and threatening the nation\u2019s racial character.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here, Murray glosses over the fact that eugenics was two-pronged: <em>positive eugenics<\/em>\u00a0encouraged procreation from favored races and <em>negative eugenics<\/em>\u00a0discouraged population increases among other races and people groups.<\/p>\n<p>This was explained by Dr. Woods Hutchinson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1912\/09\/21\/archives\/would-check-birth-of-all-defectives-dr-woods-hutchinson-says-hope.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before<\/a>\u00a0a 1912 session of the American Public Health Association. &#8220;Eugenics has two divisions, prevention of the reproduction of defective, and encouragement of the production of the specially fit,&#8221; he said. Woods went on to suggest that the &#8216;unfit&#8217; were to be segregated to &#8220;open-air farm colonies or sterilized.&#8221; This idea was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-margaret-sanger-spoke-ku-klux-klan-supported-eugenics-organization-still-honor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reminiscent<\/a> of one advocated by Sanger.<\/p>\n<p>In his book &#8220;War Against the Weak,&#8221; writer Edwin Black made it clear that Planned Parenthood&#8217;s founder &#8220;preferred negative, coercive eugenics.&#8221; Black wrote, &#8220;Sanger&#8217;s solutions were mass sterilizations and mass segregation of the defective class.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In her book, the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/1689\/1689-h\/1689-h.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pivot of Civilization<\/a>,&#8221; Sanger noted this as well, writing in part:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Eugenics is chiefly valuable in its negative aspects&#8230;. On its so-called positive or constructive side, it fails to awaken any permanent interest&#8230;. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>On its negative side it shows us that we are paying for and even submitting to the dictates of an ever increasing, unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all\u2014that the wealth of individuals and of states is being diverted from the development and the progress of human expression and civilization.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The great eugenic advances of our time&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Murray claims, &#8220;Thomas conflates the history of birth control with that of abortion&#8230; Although abortion and contraception have converged under the rubric of reproductive rights, they have distinct histories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here, Murray attempts to disconnect abortion from eugenics, claiming their histories are not the same. This is a red herring; <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/8-ways-men-pushed-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaders in eugenics<\/a> were at the forefront in the push to legalize abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Population Council<\/a>, a eugenics organization which brought the abortion pill (RU-486) to the United States, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popcouncil.org\/about\/timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founded<\/a>\u00a0in 1952 by John D. Rockefeller III who served as the organization\u2019s first president.\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popcouncil.org\/about\/timeline#ourHistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organization&#8217;s<\/a> second president was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.amphilsoc.org\/collections\/view?docId=ead\/Mss.Ms.Coll.24-ead.xml\">Frederick Osborn<\/a>,\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amphilsoc.org\/collections\/view?docId=ead\/Mss.Ms.Coll.24-ead.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founding member<\/a>\u00a0of the American Eugenics Society (AES) who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/25\/frederick-osborn-and-planned-parenthood\/\">signed<\/a>\u00a0Margaret Sanger\u2019s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/birthcontrolreview.net\/Birth%20Control%20Review\/1938-04%20April.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizens Committee for Planned Parenthood<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>American Eugenics Society <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/34894927\/Frank-Notestein-Rockefeller-the-Population-Council-and-Eugenics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">member<\/a>\u00a0Frank W. Notestein followed Osborn as president\u00a0in 1959.\u00a0By 1970, Notestein was serving on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.nlm.nih.gov\/ps\/access\/BBGFKF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Board of Directors<\/a>\u00a0of Planned Parenthood-World Population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UnzbQzvGlSU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Osborn admitted that birth control and abortion were masked terms for the same ideology: <em>eugenics<\/em>.\u00a0According to author Edwin Black,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.amphilsoc.org\/collections\/view?docId=ead\/Mss.Ms.Coll.24-ead.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Osborn\u2019s<\/a> mission was to reinvent eugenics and make the concept more acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Osborn and his colleagues were searching for a new socially palatable definition of eugenics that would promote the same ideals under a new mantle. One Osborn cohort, Frank Lorimer, wrote Osborn, &#8216;Personally, I would redefine &#8220;eugenics&#8221; to include concern with all condition affecting the life prospects of new human beings at birth.&#8217; He added the caveat, &#8216;This is a matter of strategy rather than ideology,'&#8221; Black wrote.<\/p>\n<p>After World War II, eugenics leaders became concerned that the Nazi Holocaust (which was inspired partly by the American eugenics movement) had negatively impacted the public\u2019s perception of eugenics. This led to the American Eugenics Society&#8217;s decision to change the name of its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.us\/articles\/society_for_biodemography_and_social_biology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publication<\/a>. In her book, &#8220;Controlling Human Heredity 1865 to the Present,&#8221;<em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/24975867?seq=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">author<\/a> Diane B .Paul <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/eugenics-proponent-coin-planned-parenthood-iconic-slogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a> Osborn as saying:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The name was changed because it became evident that changes of a eugenic nature would be made for reasons other than eugenics, and that tying a eugenic label on them would more often hinder than help their adoption.\u00a0<strong>Birth control and abortion are turning out to be great eugenic advances of our time. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>If they had been advanced for eugenic reasons it would have retarded or stopped their acceptance.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_226722\" style=\"width: 1123px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226722\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-226722 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Abortion-new-name-for-eugenics-according-to-Frederick-Osborn.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion new name for eugenics according to Frederick Osborn\" width=\"1113\" height=\"833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Abortion-new-name-for-eugenics-according-to-Frederick-Osborn.jpg 1113w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Abortion-new-name-for-eugenics-according-to-Frederick-Osborn-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Abortion-new-name-for-eugenics-according-to-Frederick-Osborn-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Abortion-new-name-for-eugenics-according-to-Frederick-Osborn-700x524.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Abortion-new-name-for-eugenics-according-to-Frederick-Osborn-500x374.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1113px) 100vw, 1113px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-226722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion new name for eugenics according to Frederick Osborn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Osborn reiterated this in his 1968 book, &#8220;The Future of Human Heredity,&#8221; in which he stated, &#8220;In the United States contraception is the most important factor in reducing births, and after that abortion.&#8221; He later added,\u00a0&#8220;Eugenic goals are most likely to be attained under a name other than eugenics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These &#8220;goals&#8221; began to unfold when multiple abortion organizations, rooted in eugenics, came onto the scene.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood&#8217;s eugenic history extended well past Sanger<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alan F. Guttmacher, M.D. sat on the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Population Council\u2019s<\/a> first Medical Advisory Board.\u00a0Guttmacher was a VP of the American Eugenics Society who later became president of Planned Parenthood. He is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-population-control-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credited<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-president-decriminalize-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">persuading<\/a>\u00a0Planned Parenthood&#8217;s board to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-population-control-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commit<\/a> abortions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-prez-alan-guttmacher-population-control-coercion-limiting-births\/\">claiming<\/a>\u00a0its \u201cunlimited\u201d availability was the only way to reduce population growth.<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher&#8217;s ideas of forced or compulsory population control measures were in lockstep with Sanger, who made sure that Planned Parenthood was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/tag\/alan-guttmacher\/page\/4\/\">knee deep in eugenics<\/a>.\u00a0Guttmacher\u2019s namesake institution, the Guttmacher Institute, was actually the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\">research arm<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\">special affiliate<\/a>\u201d of Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>Eugenics has been a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-connections-to-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cornerstone<\/a>\u00a0of Planned Parenthood\u2019s history, extending well beyond Sanger. Their ugly roots continue to be exposed.\u00a0In 2020, Planned Parenthood\u00a0finally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-systemic-racism-white-supremacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0its founder was a racist white supremacist. Planned Parenthood\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/internal-audit-racism-planned-parenthood-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporate<\/a>, along with\u00a0at least 19 affiliates, also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-19-planned-parenthood-affiliates-admit-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a>\u00a0a <em>present-day<\/em> problem of\u00a0systemic racism\u00a0within the organization.<\/p>\n<p>At one time, Planned Parenthood was\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/infamous-cases-forced-sterilization-america-behind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referral agency<\/a> for Iowa State\u2019s Eugenics Board, which assigned sterilization for certain individuals. \u00a0Chairman Dr. S.M. Korson\u00a0admitted a percentage of their referrals came from the welfare office or Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>The opening of Planned Parenthood\u2019s first facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/eugenicist-coerced-sterilization-north-carolina-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked<\/a> to figures\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8URm9DO9HkU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as<\/a> Art Jones and\u00a0Wallace Kuralt, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/10\/us\/redress-weighed-for-forced-sterilizations-in-north-carolina.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered<\/a>\u00a0\u201csympathetic\u201d with eugenicists), who influenced <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AeLE6un0HAQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founder<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-praises-eugenics-north-carolina-founder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Bryant<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0decision to open the facility.\u00a0&#8220;They had been involved and had known about Margaret Sanger,\u201d Bryant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8URm9DO9HkU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=dol7vaFd-ugC&amp;pg=PA327&amp;lpg=PA327&amp;dq=wallace+kuralt+,+%22margaret+sanger%22&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=DE87DBXuFI&amp;sig=si0r531_1kZToInN_U9Kg2pIr7Y&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=NSFsVNOHM4u1yATBiICABQ&amp;ved=0CFUQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&amp;q=wallace%20kuralt%20%2C%20%22margaret%20sanger%22&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jones<\/a>, an ardent proponent of population control, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1876&amp;dat=19700811&amp;id=bkQsAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=28wEAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=3696,1626404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credited<\/a>\u00a0for North Carolina\u2019s move to decriminalize abortion in 1967. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1734&amp;dat=19690705&amp;id=rXEcAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=T1EEAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=5713,362488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media reports<\/a>, Jones believed that poverty, crime, and ghettos existed because of overpopulation. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1454&amp;dat=19710212&amp;id=DytkAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=sQkEAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=1680,1814279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a>\u00a0abortion a \u201cvery necessary medical tool for population restraint.\u201d\u00a0As Mecklenburg County\u2019s welfare director from 1945 to 1972, Kuralt headed a coercive eugenic sterilization program in the state. In\u00a01983, Planned Parenthood of Greater Charlotte awarded Kuralt its infamous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-eugenicist-founder-name-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Margaret Sanger Award<\/a>, according to Kuralt\u2019s 1994\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nl.newsbank.com\/nl-search\/we\/Archives?p_product=CO&amp;s_site=charlotte&amp;p_multi=CO&amp;p_theme=realcities&amp;p_action=search&amp;p_maxdocs=200&amp;p_topdoc=1&amp;p_text_direct-0=0EB6CCF7EA0C01C5&amp;p_field_direct-0=document_id&amp;p_perpage=10&amp;p_sort=YMD_date:D&amp;s_trackval=GooglePM\">Charlotte Observer obituary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Planned Parenthood leaders who had connections to eugenics, the International Committee on Planned Parenthood (ICPP) \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/projects\/sanger\/aboutms\/organization_icpp.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maintained\u00a0<\/a>by PPFA, among others \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/backend\/ptpmcrender.fcgi?accid=PMC2973206&amp;blobtype=pdf\">rented its space for free<\/a> from the Eugenics Society.\u00a0ICPP was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-connections-to-eugenics\/\">replaced<\/a> by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) in 1952.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NARAL Pro-Choice America&#8217;s eugenic founders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/not-just-planned-parenthood-naral-eugenicist-founders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented how two of NARAL&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070922133608\/http:\/\/oasis.lib.harvard.edu\/oasis\/deliver\/~sch00781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three-member<\/a>\u00a0pre-formation planning committee\u00a0were men who held and promoted radical racist, eugenicist ideas about population control. Hardin<\/a>\u00a0was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairn-int.info\/article-E_RHMC_601_0007--cold-war-pastures-garrett-hardin-and.htm#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leader<\/a>\u00a0of the a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/father-abortion-disciple-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biographer<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/father-abortion-disciple-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disciple<\/a>\u00a0of Margaret Sanger.\u00a0While Sanger openly used eugenic terms, Lader was more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/father-abortion-rights-minorities-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subtle<\/a>, claiming society needed to look out for the \u201cprotection of the child and its future.\u201d\u00a0But what Lader really meant was not the future of\u00a0<em>every<\/em>\u00a0child, but the future of the elites, the perfect, and those who were mostly Caucasian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UK\u2019s Marie Stopes abortion chain was founded in eugenics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-marie-stopes-abortion-name-distance-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented how\u00a0UK abortion chain Marie Stopes International (MSI) recently changed its name to \u201cMSI Reproductive Choices\u201d in an effort to distance itself from the eugenicist after whom it was named.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarie Stopes\u00a0was\u00a0a\u2026 supporter of\u00a0the\u00a0eugenics\u00a0movement\u00a0and\u00a0expressed\u00a0many\u00a0opinions which\u00a0are in stark contrast to MSI\u2019s core values\u00a0and principles,\u201d said Simon Cooke,\u00a0Chief Executive of\u00a0MSI Reproductive Choices, in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Stopes had more than a legacy of \u201cfamily planning.\u201d She\u00a0was a member of the Eugenics Society who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/amp\/uk-54970977\">advocated for the sterilization<\/a>\u00a0of the so-called \u201cunfit.\u201d She also founded the Society and Clinic for Constructive Birth Control and Racial Progress (CBC) which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk\/objects\/co8185841\/leaflet-produced-by-marie-stopes-promoting-condom-use-leaflet\">included<\/a>\u00a0Henry Pratt Fairchild, a past\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asanet.org\/about-asa\/asa-story\/asa-history\/past-asa-officers\/past-asa-presidents\/henry-p-fairchild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">president<\/a>\u00a0of the American Eugenics Society and a vice-president of the American Birth Control League, which later became\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-connections-to-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1938, Fairchild\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/legacy-of-death-abortion-eugenics-euthanasia-groups-shared-board-members\/\">also sat on the board<\/a>\u00a0of the National Society for the Legalization
