{"id":243627,"date":"2021-04-20T17:25:44","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T22:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=243627"},"modified":"2021-04-21T14:17:20","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T19:17:20","slug":"biden-harris-hhs-taxpayer-aborted-eliminates-ethics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-harris-hhs-taxpayer-aborted-eliminates-ethics\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden-Harris HHS to allow taxpayer-funded research using aborted children, eliminates ethics board"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biden-Harris administration is walking back the previous administration\u2019s policies when it comes to research done using the bodies of children obtained from elective abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-21-111.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released Friday, April 16th, \u201cHHS is reversing its 2019 decision that all research applications for NIH grants and contracts proposing the use of human fetal tissue from elective abortions will be reviewed by an Ethics Advisory Board.\u201d Scientists and research institutions will be able to apply for federal grants without ethics oversight related to use of the bodies of aborted children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra defended the decision. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/04\/16\/biden-reverses-fetal-tissue-research-restrictions-482503\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0quotes Becerra as saying, \u201cWe believe that we have to do the research it takes to make sure that we are incorporating innovation and getting all of those types of treatments and therapies out there to the American people.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/media\/50446\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0subscribing to an ends-justify-means philosophy regarding fetal tissue research have pushed for this action since President Biden took office, stressing that \u201chighly worthy, scientifically meritorious research\u201d was being neglected by not being able to use the bodies of aborted children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/communications\/national-institute-of-health-reverses-trump-era-fetal-tissue-requirements-will-no-longer-convene-nih-human-fetal-tissue-research-ethics-advisory-board\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the National Right to Life slammed the decision that will make it easier to exploit aborted babies with taxpayer funds. \u201cWe condemn this sickening decision by the Biden administration,\u201d said Carol Tobias, the organization\u2019s president.. \u201cTiny human babies are aborted by abortionists and then exploited to be farmed for their organs and tissue for use in experiments [&#8230;] The Biden administration and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra have dismantled the process of making researchers meet any ethical standards when it comes to harvesting the body parts of aborted children for research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/becerra-prosecutor-pro-life-biden-department-health\/\">Biden selects Xavier Becerra, prosecutor of pro-life activists, to lead HHS<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Archbishop Joseph Naumann, Chairman of the U.S. Catholic Bishops pro-life committee, also condemned the decision. \u201cThe bodies of children killed by abortion deserve the same respect as that of any other person,\u201d he said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/research-with-fetal-tissue-from-elective-abortion-called-deeply-offensive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOur government has no right to treat innocent abortion victims as a commodity that can be scavenged for body parts to be used in research. [&#8230;] Researchers have demonstrated that we can do effective scientific research and develop efficacious clinical treatments without harvesting tissue from aborted babies. It is also deeply offensive to millions of Americans for our tax dollars to be used for research that collaborates with an industry built on the taking of innocent lives. I call on the Biden Administration to instead fund research that does not rely upon body parts taken from innocent children killed through abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of aborted fetal tissue <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fetal-tissue-necessary-innovation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not necessary for scientific innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in 2019, the previous administration put ethical safeguards in place in the form of review boards to ensure federal grants were not used for research that used aborted fetal tissue without justification. The board met once, and rejected 13 of the 14 submitted proposals, because the proposals did not utilize ethical alternatives for research, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba-list.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/biden-harris-admin-to-ramp-up-experiments-using-aborted-baby-body-parts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBA List<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Past attempts to shed light on the illegal sale of aborted baby parts for research and other uses have been met with hostility. In 2017, then-Attorney General of California Kamala Harris <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-investigator-sues-planned-parenthood-conspiracy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teamed up with Planned Parenthood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to suppress pro-life journalist David Daleiden and CMP\u2019s investigation into Planned Parenthood\u2019s participation in the trafficking of fetal tissue. Daleiden sued both Harris and then-Attorney General Xavier Becerra, and has been tied up in legal battles since.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a
