They published the results of their research in the journal<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/fulltext\/S0092-8674(21)00305-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cell<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Thursday, April 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/fulltext\/S0092-8674(21)00305-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> motivation behind the pursuit of the project was its \u201cpromis[e]\u201d as a \u201cstrategy for various regenerative medicine applications, including the generation of organs and tissues for transplantation.\u201d Researchers also cite a desire to \u201cbetter understand early human development and primate evolution and develop strategies to improve human chimerism in evolutionarily distant species.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers injected 25 human<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/bioinformant.com\/what-are-ips-cells\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">induced pluripotent stem cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or iPS cells, into macaque monkey embryos. They detected human cells growing in all of the 132 embryos after only a single day. The embryos were allowed to grow and were studied for 19 days, at which point part of the group was \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/fulltext\/S0092-8674(21)00305-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into several pieces with a 1mL syringe,\u201d some of which pieces were salvaged for further analysis. Other embryos \u201cwere harvested and fixed in 4% (w\/v) paraformaldehyde,\u201d before being stained or dehydrated, frozen, cut up, and \u201cprepared as cryosections with 8 \u03bcm thickness on pre-treated glass slides.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers, and some bioethicists, believe the ends justify the means.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/scientist\/juan-carlos-izpisua-belmonte\/\">Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte<\/a>, a co-author of the study, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2021\/04\/15\/987164563\/scientists-create-early-embryos-that-are-part-human-part-monkey?fbclid=IwAR3213_HqeLgbSRI5KEmQbgfy0wef1qQo4ZZwtMkrukOxKpHncngNbXziQs\">NPR<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cThis is one of the major problems in medicine\u2014organ transplantation. The demand for that is much higher than the supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/researchers-organisms-nearly-identical-humans-experimentation\/\"><em>Researchers create organisms nearly identical to humans\u2026 for experimentation<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/medicine\/bioethics\/about\/faculty-staff\/insoo-hyun\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insoo Hyun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Professor in the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University\u2019s School of Medicine who is in favor of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/researchers-organisms-nearly-identical-humans-experimentation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the current 14-day-limit on human embryo experimentation, told NPR, \u201cI don&#8217;t see this type of research being ethically problematic. It&#8217;s aimed at lofty humanitarian goals.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a number of concerns have been raised about this type of research. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy first question is: Why?\u201d Kirsten Matthews, a Fellow in Science and Technology Policy at Rice University\u2019s Baker Institute for Public Policy, told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2021\/04\/15\/987164563\/scientists-create-early-embryos-that-are-part-human-part-monkey?fbclid=IwAR3213_HqeLgbSRI5KEmQbgfy0wef1qQo4ZZwtMkrukOxKpHncngNbXziQs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This question is also implied by Dr. David Prentice and David Christensen, who<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/s27589.pcdn.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Comment-by-CLI-and-FRC-on-NIH-Proposal-to-Fund-Human-Animal-Chimeras-6Sept2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">note<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cthere has been no valid ethical or scientific rationale for the necessity of creating this type of human-animal chimera,\u201d and further point out that this type of research \u201ccreate[s] organisms with morally uncertain status.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthews agrees that these are murky waters. \u201cShould it be regulated as human because it has a significant proportion of human cells in it? Or should it be regulated just as an animal? Or something else?
