(Right to Life UK<\/a>) Sinn F\u00e9in has said it will bring forward a\u00a0proposal<\/a>\u00a0to the Northern Ireland Executive this week on the commissioning of abortion in Northern Ireland to increase abortion access across the region. Rival nationalist party Aont\u00fa has accused Sinn F\u00e9in of trying to \u201cramp up [\u2026] the number of abortions in the North of Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n

Leader of Sinn F\u00e9in, Mary Lou McDonald, has\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that it is \u201ctotally unacceptable\u201d that the commissioning of abortion has not yet come into force despite Northern Ireland\u2019s abortion regime being\u00a0imposed<\/a>\u00a0in March 2020.<\/p>\n

When the Government in Westminster imposed abortion on the region, abortions started being performed in hospitals on an interim basis. In effect, this meant that there was no national policy for the provision of abortions. As such, earlier this year, one health trust in Northern Ireland was\u00a0unable to perform abortions<\/a>\u00a0because the doctor was on maternity leave. The other four NHS trusts were still able to carry out abortions.<\/p>\n

Northern Ireland Health Minister Robin Swann has continued to\u00a0argue<\/a>\u00a0that, as a controversial issue, it is the task of the Executive to agree to set up the services and not the responsibility of any one department.<\/p>\n

\u2018Ramp up of the number of abortions in the North of Ireland\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), a long-term\u00a0advocate<\/a>\u00a0for introducing abortion to Northern Ireland, has\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0the Northern Ireland Secretary, Brandon Lewis MP, of unlawfully denying women in the region an abortion.<\/p>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Ms McDonald\u00a0said<\/a>: \u201cWomen in the north are legally entitled to modern and compassionate healthcare and it is totally unacceptable that two years on the health minister has not commissioned services\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, Aont\u00fa has\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0Sinn F\u00e9in of trying to \u201cramp up [\u2026] the number of abortions in the North of Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n

The party\u2019s representative in East Londonderry Gemma Brolly\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that it is \u201cheart breaking for many nationalists\u201d that Sinn F\u00e9in now opposes the 1916 Easter Proclamation vow to \u2018cherish all the children of the nation equally\u2019.<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cSinn F\u00e9in talks about disability rights, yet they brought about a bill that allows for abortion up until birth for a child with Down\u2019s syndrome\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ms Brolly added: \u201cShockingly there were well over 700 abortions in the North in the last year, yet it seems this is not enough for Sinn F\u00e9in\u201d.<\/p>\n

Health officials project potential 497% increase in abortions in NI if abortion services comissioned<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to information\u00a0gained<\/a>\u00a0from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, health officials in Northern Ireland met in December 2019 to discuss how many abortions the region should expect if abortion services were commissioned after Westminster voted to impose abortion on the region in July 2019.<\/p>\n

Officials\u00a0estimated<\/a>\u00a0that the region could see up to 6,500 terminations annually.<\/p>\n

According to notes from the meeting: \u201cService needs to be scaleable [sic] (if service take-up reaches [\u2026] England and Wales levels that figure could be 6,500).\u201d<\/p>\n

According to figures from 2019, 1,089 abortions were performed on women who claimed residence in Northern Ireland. Most women travelled to\u00a0England and Wales<\/a>\u00a0to have abortions, totalling 1,014, while a few (67) travelled to the\u00a0Republic of Ireland<\/a>\u00a0for the procedures.<\/p>\n

If the 6,500 number is accurate, this would mean a 497% increase in abortions for women from Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

Bill launched to protect disabled babies in the womb<\/strong><\/p>\n

The controversy comes at the same time as DUP MLA Paul Givan has\u00a0launched<\/a>\u00a0a Bill to attempt to provide protections for babies in the womb with disabilities, who currently can be aborted up to term.<\/p>\n

The Severe Fetal Impairment Abortion (Amendment) Bill has received the support of over 26,000 people who\u00a0signed a petition<\/a>\u00a0calling on political leaders in Northern Ireland to prevent babies with disabilities, including Down\u2019s syndrome, cleft lip and club foot, from being aborted up until birth.<\/p>\n

Last week, disability rights campaigner, Heidi Crowter,\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0the Health Committee of the Northern Ireland Assembly that the abortion legislation in the region \u201ctells me and other people with Down\u2019s syndrome that we are worth less than those without disabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Bill will be put to a vote later\u00a0today<\/a>\u00a0in the Northern Ireland Assembly.<\/p>\n

Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said: \u201cSadly Sinn F\u00e9in have shown themselves to be more concerned with expanding abortion access than with the rights of people with disabilities who can be aborted up to birth under the current legislation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe estimate that potentially 6,500 babies will now be terminated annually in the country, an increase of nearly 500%, represents a failure to protect the lives of babies in the womb and a failure to offer full support to women with unplanned pregnancies\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNorthern Ireland is a country where\u00a0100,000 people are alive today<\/a>\u00a0because they chose to protect unborn babies over accepting the same abortion law that was introduced into Britain in 1967\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of Northern Ireland did not want these extreme abortion regulations imposed on them and still do not want them\u201d.<\/p>\n
