But for some, it&#8217;s too little, too late."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A new maternity ad from athletic powerhouse Nike is being hailed as inspirational \u2014 but others are saying Nike should still be held accountable for its past actions.<\/p>\n<p>Titled &#8220;The Toughest Athletes,&#8221; the ad features mothers who are pregnant and postpartum, cut alongside superstar athletes like Serena Williams, Alex Morgan, and more. \u201cCan you be an athlete? You, pregnant? You, a mother? That depends,\u201d the ad begins. &#8220;What is an athlete? Someone who moves? Sounds like you. Someone who gets it done, no matter what? You do that. Someone who listens to her body. Also you. Someone who defies gravity. You. Someone who deals with the pain, hits her limit, and pushes past it. Pushing, pushing, pushing. Someone who earns every single win. You, you, you. So can you be an athlete? If you aren&#8217;t, no one is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video was spotlighting Nike&#8217;s new maternity line, Nike (M), which was just released last September. It was captioned, \u201cMotherhood looks different for everyone. But no matter what you do or how you do it, you are the toughest athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_-5MGkUwe6w\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many applauded the ad for its inspirational message and inclusive imaging. But other athletes have had quite the opposite experience, dealing with Nike&#8217;s discrimination against them while they were pregnant and parenting.<\/p>\n<p>Allyson Felix is a nine-time Olympic medal winner and the most decorated female Track and Field Olympian of all time. She was also sponsored by Nike for seven years, but in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/22\/opinion\/allyson-felix-pregnancy-nike.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a New York Times op-ed<\/a>, said the company was not supportive when she became a mother. She was pregnant during contract negotiations in 2017, during which they tried to force her to take <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nike-cut-olympic-pay-pregnant-fought-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 70% pay cut<\/a>. She also asked for guarantees that she wouldn&#8217;t be punished for performing at a lower level while pregnant and postpartum; Nike refused. \u201cI\u2019ve been one of Nike\u2019s most widely marketed athletes,\u201d she wrote. \u201cIf I can\u2019t secure maternity protections, who can?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nike-discriminated-pregnant\/\">Female athletes say Nike discriminated against them for getting pregnant<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a Twitter thread in response to the ad, Felix applauded Nike for featuring pregnant athletes but <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allysonfelix\/status\/1371335979471044610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized the ad<\/a> for ignoring Nike&#8217;s own role in widespread pregnancy discrimination. &#8220;My experience, along with many others, forced NIKE to support athlete&#8217;s maternity, and when I watch this ad, it doesn\u2019t seem to acknowledge that war. It was also hard to watch. It celebrates all of the right things but seems to ignore the struggle it took to get to this point.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other athletes backed up Felix&#8217; claims, also saying Nike <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nike-discriminated-pregnant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discriminated against them<\/a> for being pregnant. Runner Phoebe Wright \u2014 who was sponsored by Nike for six years \u2014 previously stated, \u201cGetting pregnant is the kiss of death for a female athlete. There\u2019s no way I\u2019d tell Nike if I were pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet athletes like Felix have been brave enough to speak out, while other elite athletes have made sure to show that pregnancy and parenthood doesn&#8217;t hold them back from being successful. Alysia Monta\u00f1o, a six-time U.S. National Champion, World Championship Medalist, and Olympian, made headlines for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/olympic-runner-five-months-pregnant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competing while visibly pregnant<\/a>\u00a0and hopes it\u00a0sends a message to other women. \u201cThe more human we can be, the more relatable we can be,\u201d she said in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-athletes-sponsorship-purpose-greater-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a previous interview<\/a>. \u201cI love running fast, of course.
