{"id":241687,"date":"2021-03-18T09:35:18","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T14:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=241687"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:18:14","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:18:14","slug":"bill-ban-abortion-preborn-disabilities-northern-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bill-ban-abortion-preborn-disabilities-northern-ireland\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill to ban abortions on preborn babies with disabilities advances in Northern Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/bill-to-stop-abortion-for-disabilities-including-downs-syndrome-passes-second-stage?fbclid=IwAR1rK7av8OjmMlEwJOEDYgI9m2xNFet8m2H1IkMMgrbc2BP1RiPsWqvEEqQ\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) [On March 15] the Severe Fetal Impairment Abortion (Amendment) Bill passed its second stage at the Northern Ireland Assembly by 48 votes to 12.<\/p>\n<div id=\"news_post_content\" class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_3_4 et_pb_column_0_tb_body et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_post_content et_pb_post_content_0_tb_body\">\n<p>The Severe Fetal Impairment Abortion (Amendment) Bill proposes removing the current grounds in the abortion regulations that were imposed on Northern Ireland by the British Government in 2020, which allow abortion for babies with disabilities including Down\u2019s syndrome, cleft lip, and club foot.<\/p>\n<p>The vote followed a long debate that lasted a number of hours during two sessions today. A number of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) gave impassioned speeches highlighting why they supported the Bill, many of them telling deeply personal stories from people with disabilities and their families who were supporting the Bill from constituencies throughout Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>It was announced during the debate that Sinn F\u00e9in would be abstaining from voting for the Bill at Second Stage. All Sinn F\u00e9in MLAs accordingly proceeded to abstain from voting for the Bill.<\/p>\n<p>This followed an announcement from Sinn F\u00e9in on Sunday that the party <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/sinn-fein-accused-of-trying-to-ramp-up-northern-ireland-abortions-with-new-proposal\">would be bringing forward<\/a> a proposal to the Northern Ireland Executive this week on the commissioning of abortion in Northern Ireland to increase abortion access across the region. Rival nationalist party Aont\u00fa has accused Sinn F\u00e9in of trying to \u201cramp up [\u2026] the number of abortions in the North of Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Severe Fetal Impairment Abortion (Amendment) Bill will now proceed onto <a href=\"https:\/\/education.niassembly.gov.uk\/post_16\/the_work_of_the_assembly\/making_legislation\/bill_act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Committee Stage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strong support from the disability community and beyond<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dontscreenusout.org\/press-release-heidi-addresses-ni-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,608<\/a> people with Down\u2019s syndrome and their families signed an open letter to party leaders in Northern Ireland urging them to support the Bill.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday 11th March, disability rights campaigner, Heidi Crowter, who herself has Down\u2019s syndrome, <a href=\"https:\/\/dontscreenusout.org\/press-release-heidi-addresses-ni-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the Health Committee of the Northern Ireland Assembly that the current abortion legislation in the region \u201ctells me and other people with Down\u2019s syndrome that we are worth less than those without disabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Crowter <a href=\"https:\/\/dontscreenusout.org\/press-release-heidi-addresses-ni-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Committee<\/a>: \u201cThe law in Great Britain, and now sadly the law in Northern Ireland, tells me and other people with Down\u2019s syndrome that we are worth less than those without disabilities. That is why I want my voice to be heard and the laws to be fairer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband also has Down\u2019s Syndrome and I value him and I think society should too. The law makes me feel very sad it is saying that I, and people like me, may as well have not been born\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/disability-advocates-fight-discriminatory-abortions-northern-ireland\/\">Disability advocates fight for an end to discriminatory abortions in Northern Ireland<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 27,000 people have signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/citizengo.org\/en-row\/signit\/200634\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a> calling on political leaders in Northern Ireland to vote for the Severe Fetal Impairment Abortion (Amendment) Bill.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Congratulations to Heidi Crowter and the wider community of people with disabilities who have worked so hard to achieve this outcome this evening\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Tonight\u2019s vote is a significant milestone in the journey towards ending abortion up to birth for disabilities including Down\u2019s syndrome, cleft lip, and club foot in Northern Ireland. It\u2019s also amazing to see the very large majority that voted for this Bill.
