(Indiana Right to Life<\/a>) Reannin had one option when she found out she was pregnant with her fifth baby.<\/p>\n

Or so she thought.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was dead set on abortion,\u201d she later said. \u201cI thought, \u2018Not gonna happen, nope, nope, nope.\u2019 I had four kids already, this wasn\u2019t planned. At first, it was just denial. \u2018I\u2019m not pregnant. I\u2019m not doing this, not having this baby.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Seeking an abortion, she placed two calls: One to Planned Parenthood and one to Women\u2019s Care Center. Planned Parenthood told her they\u2019d see her \u201cnext week.\u201d Women\u2019s Care Center said, \u201cWe can see you right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that, Reannin walked into Women\u2019s Care Center and the trajectory of her life changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told [the counselor] about my plan to get an abortion, and the counselor explained all the procedures to me in a truly non-judgmental, really supportive way,\u201d Reannin said. \u201cShe told me my choices, including giving me the option to have the baby. At the time, having the baby hadn\u2019t even crossed my mind!\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with the realization of a second choice came the knowledge of her baby\u2019s biological reality and the procedure that almost ended her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t even understand what all went into an abortion\u2013 I thought it was just taking a little pill and then it was all done,\u201d Reannin said. \u201cBut then I realized there was a heartbeat. Realized it was a baby! And it\u2019s been a baby from the very start.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that first appointment, Reannin watched as her baby\u2019s image was emblazoned on the ultrasound screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was at that very first ultrasound that I decided I was going to have her,\u201d she said. \u201cThe first thing I ever remember seeing was the top of her head. And just like that, I thought, \u2018I want her! I\u2019m having this baby. This is going to happen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Her child was small\u2014the same age most babies are<\/a> when aborted in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was only 10 weeks old, but she was already this baby<\/em>\u2014arms, legs, kicking, moving,\u201d Reannin recalled. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve had four other kids before! But even as a mom of four, I still didn\u2019t even realize the way a baby developed. I couldn\u2019t have told you that was a baby until I saw a Women\u2019s Care Center early ultrasound.\u201d<\/p>\n

Real Empowerment, Real Alternatives<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the years, thousands upon thousands of women just like Reannin have walked through Women\u2019s Care Center<\/a>\u2019s doors to have their lives changed in the best way possible.<\/p>\n

The pregnancy help organization, which has 33 locations across the U.S., was founded in South Bend, Indiana in 1984. That first year, the center served 300 women. Today, the centers serve over 400 women every day.<\/p>\n

In Indiana, the organization\u2019s 16 centers have expanded their reach so that one in eight babies start with one of their centers.<\/p>\n

Part of that success they attribute to Indiana\u2019s Pregnancy and Parenting Support Program, an initiative that provides funds for services that promote childbirth rather than abortion. Supported by Indiana Right to Life<\/a>, the program was first signed into law by then-Governor Mike Pence in 2014. Through this program, the Indiana State Health Department hires Real Alternatives<\/a>, a privatized social services program, to serve women like Reannin across the state.<\/p>\n

The initiative has served more than 76,000 women with life-affirming services since 2014.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s Care Center is one of six Real Alternatives providers throughout the state that receives reimbursement for services, such as parenting classes, counseling, and material resources.<\/p>\n

Since Indiana\u2019s Pregnancy and Parenting Support Program started, Women\u2019s Care Center has expanded significantly, adding five new centers to its Indiana fleet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could not have expanded in the way that we have without Real Alternatives, there\u2019s no question about it,\u201d said Ann Manion, volunteer president for Women\u2019s Care Center.<\/p>\n

Manion says that in the years since the program started, her Indiana centers have seen an 82 percent increase in positive pregnancy tests. In 2019, the centers served 10,702 pregnant women.<\/p>\n

Since Real Alternatives began, Women\u2019s Care Center has been able to do even more than increase client intake.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the depth of care has grown, as well,\u201d Manion said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been able to do more education and build more education programs.\u201d<\/p>\n

One program offers a parenting booklet called \u201cRaising Kids with Character,\u201d a resource that highlights easy ways for parents to raise children with virtues, like honesty, patience, and kindness. Manion said this booklet would have been impossible without Real Alternatives funding.<\/p>\n

With enough room in their budget to think creatively, Manion believes the centers have been able to further empower women in the choice for life.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cI want others to hear my story.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reannin certainly felt that way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took a while, but I realized that I was ready for this,\u201d she said. \u201cI am a grown woman! I can have this baby\u2014it\u2019s not such a big deal. After I had Agnes, I came right back to Women\u2019s Care Center. I\u2019m grateful to have someone in that first, really scary time. To have someone with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

That support saved Agnes\u2019s life, and a lifetime of heartache for Reannin herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that I have her, I feel so guilty about what I almost did,\u201d she said. \u201cThe guilt really hit me. I can\u2019t imagine what life would be like if I\u2019d gone through with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reannin is clearly aware of the very real alternative she took to making an appointment with Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I hadn\u2019t gotten an appointment at Women\u2019s Care Center first, I would have gone right to Planned Parenthood and I probably would have aborted,\u201d she said. \u201cThey wouldn\u2019t have given me the care and counseling that Women\u2019s Care Center did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Reannin is speaking out so that other women facing similar circumstances will find the help that she did.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want others to hear my story, especially other women in my position,\u201d she said. \u201cIf anyone is in that situation, it\u2019s a really tough place to be. You feel like you get judged either way, no matter what decision you make. We are so judgmental of others\u2019 choices.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I was never judged at Women\u2019s Care Center. Women\u2019s Care Center is truly wonderful. It\u2019s very, very helpful to women in all walks of life. I\u2019m most grateful for the early counseling, having that person who\u2019s there for you. You\u2019re going to make your own choice and they\u2019re going to very kindly help you through the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

That process, one without judgment and one that is steeped in kindness, is what led her to Agnes.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that I have Agnes, I wouldn\u2019t give her up for anything<\/em>,\u201d she said. \u201c<\/em>I love her SO much. I want people in my situation to know it\u2019s ok to have your baby. You\u2019ll be ok! It\u2019s hardest in the first moment, when you find out, and it may be hard in the future, but you will be ok. You can do it. That\u2019s what I want people to know.\u201d<\/p>\n
