{"id":241412,"date":"2021-03-12T15:34:54","date_gmt":"2021-03-12T21:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=241412"},"modified":"2021-03-13T11:03:30","modified_gmt":"2021-03-13T17:03:30","slug":"ten-year-study-abortion-maternal-mortality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ten-year-study-abortion-maternal-mortality\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten-year study shows legalized abortion does not improve maternal mortality"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrictions on abortion do not lead to an increase in women dying due to a lack of \u201csafe\u201d abortions, according to a new study\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aaplog\/status\/1366432642812403712\">highlighted by<\/a>\u00a0the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent tweet, AAPLOG cited a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/2\/e006013\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the peer-reviewed medical journal BMJ Open, which examined maternal mortality in 32 Mexican states over a 10-year period, between 2002 and 2011. The study began by acknowledging the pro-abortion argument that \u201cthe legal status of abortion \u2026 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a factor that influences maternal health.\u201d They also acknowledged the common argument that restrictions on abortion are thought to lead to \u201cclandestine, or illegal, or unsafe abortions\u201d leading to an increase in maternal deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But instead of discovering data in support of that argument, the study instead found that \u201cstates with less permissive abortion legislation exhibited <em><strong>lower<\/strong><\/em> MMR [maternal mortality rates]\u201d (emphasis added) than those where abortion laws are more permissive. In other words, <strong>pro-life restrictions on abortion did <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>not <\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>result in higher maternal mortality rates<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Even in Mexican states that enacted constitutional amendments outlawing abortion, women\u2019s health did not suffer: \u201cNo evidence of deleterious or beneficial effect [on maternal mortality] was found for the presence of constitutional amendments protecting the unborn over a 4-year study period.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A study of maternal mortality in 32 Mexican states over a 10-year period found that maternal mortality rates were NOT improved by permissive abortion legislation. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gvee5gJWpw\">pic.twitter.com\/gvee5gJWpw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; AAPLOG (@aaplog) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aaplog\/status\/1366432642812403712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 1, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be clear, the Mexico study\u2019s authors did not find evidence that abortion restrictions were the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of better maternal outcomes. Independent variables between the states explained most of the differences in outcomes. As AAPLOG\u2019s tweet pointed out, \u201cnon-legislative factors (female literacy, birth weight, skilled attendance at birth, clean water, etc.) were leading causes\u201d in the lower maternal mortality rates in the states with more abortion restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0010782416303791\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempted rebuttal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the noted pro-abortion journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contraception <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sought to undermine the Mexico study\u2019s conclusions by attacking the authors\u2019 use of the underlying data, while also engaging in ad hominem attacks. The paper claimed the Mexico study\u2019s authors \u201chave failed to respond to anti-abortion \u2018junk science,\u2019 which influences policy in the region,\u201d claims an excerpt in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2019\/01\/22\/showdown-over-a-study-of-abortion-policy-leads-to-a-retraction-and-leaves-no-one-happy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retraction Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the critique did not hold up to scrutiny. \u201cSincerely, I don\u2019t know how our study is \u2018influencing\u2019 policies in the region, and of course I don\u2019t consider our work as \u2018junk science\u2019,\u201d said Elard Koch, the main author of the Mexico study. After an examination of the data and counter-argument in the paper, Koch pointed out a major statistical error in key calculations of the rebuttal that undermined the published conclusions. The flaws in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contraception <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article were serious enough that the editors were forced to issue a public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2019\/01\/22\/showdown-over-a-study-of-abortion-policy-leads-to-a-retraction-and-leaves-no-one-happy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retraction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/flaws-state-late-term-abortion-maternal-mortality\/\">Flawed study falsely claims laws restricting late-term abortions increase maternal mortality<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The finding that abortion restrictions do not cause higher mortality rates deals a blow to a common line of argument for abortion activists. The notion that maternal health suffers when abortion restrictions are enacted is a narrative that abortion activists often trot out in response to the enactment of new pro-life laws. In 2019, in response to Georgia\u2019s heartbeat bill, Hillary Clinton <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hillary-clinton-women-die-without-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWhen anti-choice politicians limit access to reproductive care, women die.\u201d She argued that \u201cwe must continue to fight the new wave of six-week abortion bans that make women collateral damage for extremist views.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The misperception about abortion and maternal mortality has its origins in a big lie told by early abortion activists. In the years leading up to the legalization of abortion, abortion activists like Dr. Bernard Nathanson (one of the founders of NARAL) disseminated false statistics about the number of women dying each year from illegal abortions, as Live Action News has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/thousands-women-werent-dying-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The widely cited figure \u2014 that 5,000 to 10,000 women were dying each year from back-alley abortions \u2014 was a deliberate fabrication designed to advance the pro-abortion agenda. Dr. Nathanson, who later became pro-life, admitted to fabricating this number because it was a \u201cnice, round, shocking figure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mexico study correlates with historical analyses of maternal mortality in the 20th century. It was the advent of antibiotics like sulfa and penicillin in the mid-20th century, not abortion legalization, that resulted in the dramatic reduction of maternal mortality rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current maternal mortality rate comparisons between countries further refute abortion activists\u2019 arguments. Countries like Poland and Malta \u2014 which have tight abortion restrictions \u2014 have lower mortality rates, at three and nine deaths per 100,000 live births respectively, while the U.S. rate stands at 17 deaths per 100,000 according to the latest data, as Vox <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/1\/30\/21113782\/pregnancy-deaths-us-maternal-mortality-rate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Mexico study is right, then the remedy for maternal mortality is <em>not<\/em> permissive abortion legislation, and abortion activists need to stop using a deceptive narrative to further their cause.
