The Satanic Temple is trying<\/span> yet again<\/span><\/a> to sue a state for its abortion restrictions. Though the U.S. Supreme Court<\/span> refused to hear<\/span><\/a> the Temple’s case against the State of Missouri, the Temple is now suing the State of Texas<\/a> on similar grounds. <\/span><\/p>\n

Temple co-founder and spokesperson Lucien Greaves says the state\u2019s pre-abortion requirements are “a violation of… religious liberty.” The state requires a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion, after a woman receives a pre-procedure sonogram and written information about the medical risks of abortion, along with information on adoption alternatives and fetal development.<\/span><\/p>\n

Greaves claims that abortion is a \u201critualistic practice\u201d for Satanists and that there is \u201ca distinct kind of procedure for this, and in no part of this do we include getting sonograms or any other medically unnecessary acts as are required in Texas. Therefore, the imposition of those things, we feel, is a violation of our religious liberty.” The Washington Times reports:<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Greaves goes further: \u201cThe ritual goes like this: Before the abortion takes place \u2026 a member of The Satanic Temple<\/a> will look at her reflection, be reminded of her personhood and responsibility to herself, take deep breaths, focus on her intent and make herself comfortable. When ready, she will say the third and fifth tenet of the temple aloud.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Satanic third tenet reads, \u201cOne\u2019s body is inviolable, subject to one\u2019s own will alone,\u201d and the fifth reads, \u201cBeliefs should conform to one\u2019s best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one\u2019s beliefs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201c[After the abortion],\u201d says Mr. Greaves, \u201cthe woman would return to her reflection and cite her personal affirmation: \u2018By my body, my blood. By my will, it is done.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ironically, Satanists highlight “scientific facts” to justify their pro-abortion stance even though a preborn child is a distinct human being and not a mere part of his mother\u2019s body. Therefore, by the Satanic Temple’s own beliefs, the preborn child should be \u201cinviolable.\u201d It is <\/span>only <\/span><\/i>by \u2018distorting scientific facts to fit beliefs\u2019 that the group can arrive at the conclusion that life begins at any time other than\u00a0<\/span>fertilization<\/span><\/a>. By proclaiming abortion to be a \u201creligious ritual,\u201d and relentlessly pursuing frivolous lawsuits for the \u201cright\u201d to \u201cpractice\u201d it, the Temple unwittingly publicizes its hypocritical betrayal of its members’ own professed \u201cfaith.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
