Her initial attempt at legal restitution was met with silence. While she could have attempted to go through the courts, that option was expensive and soon she discovered her pregnancy was high-risk, rendering her unable to pursue other avenues of justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to her article in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-9322601\/Author-sacked-pregnant-reveals-true-price-women-pay-having-children.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Mail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, every year 54,000 United Kingdom women are forced to leave their jobs because they became pregnant, and 77% of mothers experience discrimination at work. When Bearley found she wasn\u2019t alone, she wrote a book and set up an organization called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pregnantthenscrewed.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant Then Screwed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the anecdotes Brearley writes about include an employer who forced a woman to prove she wasn\u2019t pregnant by taking a shot of vodka every morning, another pregnant woman whose boss asked if she had considered an abortion, and a woman who \u2014\u00a0after being told her promotion was guaranteed \u2014\u00a0had the opportunity pulled when she told her boss she was expecting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a normal year, the organization fields about 3,000 calls, connecting women with legal resources and advice. Since the start of the pandemic, that number has ballooned to 32,000, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2021\/mar\/02\/mothers-are-livid-weve-had-enough-the-pregnant-women-being-forced-out-of-the-workplace\">Guardian<\/a>. Among other things, Pregnant Then Screwed offers workplace training for employers, and also seeks government support for equal parental leave for fathers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>VIDEO: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-dark-pregnancy-discrimination\/\">Workers recount Planned Parenthood\u2019s \u2018dark\u2019 culture of pregnancy discrimination<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents in the U.S. have been similarly flummoxed while working from home during the pandemic. In July of last year, Florida State University\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/07\/02\/fsu-tells-staff-they-cant-care-for-kids-while-working-remotely\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that parents working from home would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no longer be allowed to care for their children while working remotely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A woman in California <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/08\/us\/drisana-rios-lawsuit-hub-international.html#:~:text=The%20woman%2C%20Drisana%20Rios%20of,discrimination%2C%20retaliation%20and%20wrongful%20termination.&amp;text=Ms.%20Rios%20had%20worked%20full,Hub%20International%20since%20August%202019.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is suing her former place of work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after she was fired when her boss heard her four-year-old and one-year-old children on a work call. Time magazine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5942117\/mothers-fired-lawsuit-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently published the story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of three women who were denied reasonable accommodations for infants and children and were subsequently fired.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women are all too often being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-employees-punished-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">punished<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and made to feel as if they must choose between their livelihoods and motherhood. In response to Alabama\u2019s 2019 heartbeat law, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/corporate-misogyny-ceos-banning-abortion-bad-business\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">editorial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by nearly 200 CEOs made it clear that they considered abortion preferable to child-rearing for their bottom line: \u201cRestricting access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion, threatens the health, independence, and economic stability of our employees and customers.\u201d A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wrdcsc\/status\/1138415127831752704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1138415127831752704%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.liveaction.org%2Fnews%2Fcorporate-misogyny-ceos-banning-abortion-bad-business%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> user summed up the CEOs\u2019 message: \u201cBREAKING: Area CEOs prefer abortion to maternity leave, call it feminism.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, working mothers also have been celebrated in ways sometimes that are, even if unintentionally, pro-life. In a widely praised 2019 issue, Vogue featured four prominent working mothers and their babies: rapper Cardi B, model Ashley Graham, director Greta Gerwig, and fashion designer Stella McCartney.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWomen always want to talk about feminism and supporting everybody, except if it doesn\u2019t fit your category of what to support. Certain women that claim they are feminists only think that a certain type of woman should represent that. [\u2026] Feminism means being equal to a man.
