{"id":241232,"date":"2021-03-05T15:35:54","date_gmt":"2021-03-05T21:35:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=241232"},"modified":"2021-03-05T11:52:40","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T17:52:40","slug":"for-people-act-disturbing-implications-speech-religious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/for-people-act-disturbing-implications-speech-religious\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-life groups: &#8216;For the People Act of 2021&#8217; has disturbing implications for free speech, religious liberty"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/1\/text?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22hr1%22%5D%7D&amp;r=1&amp;s=2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H.R. 1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the \u201cFor the People Act of 2021,\u201d which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/house-democrats-pass-election-reforms-044241962.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed the U.S. House this week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a vote of 220-210, was introduced as an election overhaul desperately needed to fix the deterioration of American democracy \u2014 but a closer look at some of the bill\u2019s provisions reveals a disturbing impact on First Amendment rights \u2014 including those of pro-life groups \u2014 and religious liberty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spearheaded by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) along with Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), and John Sarbanes (D-Md.), the bill seeks to establish an alternative campaign funding system for selected federal offices and addresses issues of voter access, election integrity, and political spending. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/house-democrats-pass-election-reforms-044241962.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from ABC News, the bill \u201cwould automatically register people to vote and restore the voting rights of felons. It would also mandate more than two weeks of early voting, encourage voting-by-mail and expand absentee ballot drop boxes across the country \u2014 along with other provisions meant to address concerns raised by election officials during the 2020 election cycle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/election-integrity\/report\/the-facts-about-hr-1-the-the-people-act-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, H.R. 1 \u201cfederalizes and micromanages the election process administered by the states, imposing unnecessary, unwise, and unconstitutional mandates on the states and reversing the decentralization of the American election process\u2014which is necessary for protecting our liberty and freedom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill would strip power from state legislatures to draw congressional districts and instead assign it to \u201cnonpartisan redistricting commissions.\u201d Those who wish to serve on these commissions would be subject to intense scrutiny of their financial support of professional, social, political, religious, or community organizations or cause<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-healthcare-jobs-equality-act-worse\/\">Health professionals have lost jobs for their pro-life beliefs. The Equality Act will make it worse.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person\u2019s religious liberty would essentially be a litmus test for determining eligibility to serve on a redistricting commission \u2014 something that is actually unconstitutional. It would render obsolete Article 6, Clause 3, of the U.S. Constitution which states <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that \u201cno religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The requirement of disclosing religious affiliations could discourage participation in this commission \u2013 or more concerning, disqualify an individual altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-life groups have also voiced concerns about the ramifications of this bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/cna\/opponents-of-campaign-finance-bill-say-it-presents-pro-life-religious-liberty-concerns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Catholic Register<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a letter sent to Congress by the Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) states that H.R. 1 would put \u201conerous and unworkable regulatory standards on the ability of pro-life voters and the pro-life community to discuss policy issues with elected officials and the public\u201d and \u201cwould subject citizens who contribute to nonprofit organizations to harassment and intimidation by making their personal information available in a government-controlled database, and through an expansion of the definition of \u2018electioneering communications\u2019 it would subject virtually all issue-related ads to burdensome disclaimer requirements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill provides lawmakers with the authority to potentially impose criminal sanctions to diminish the amount of private speech regarding these lawmakers\u2019 own actions, as National Right to Life\u2019s Carol Tobias <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CarolTobias1\/status\/1367129616515801090\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rights of all Americans to worship according to their beliefs and to support their charitable institutions of choice without fear of recriminations must be protected.
