A man in Japan has been arrested after tricking his pregnant girlfriend into taking mifepristone, the first chemical used in the abortion pill regimen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On February 22, 21-year-old Jin Mimae was taken into custody for attempting abortion without consent. After being apprehended, he admitted to the charges, telling police, \u201cI didn\u2019t want to marry her,\u201d according to <\/span>Tokyo Reporter<\/span><\/a>. He added, \u201cBecause of the current economic conditions, I did not want to raise a child.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The victim is believed to be Mimae\u2019s 18-year-old girlfriend, who took the pills he gave her after Mimae told her they were a treatment for a sexually-transmitted disease. At the time, she was five weeks pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>Asahi.com<\/span><\/a>, days earlier, the girl had told Mimae she had a positive pregnancy test and made an appointment with her doctor the following day. Police believe Mimae ordered mifepristone over the internet on the day of the test. Mifepristone is not an approved drug in Japan, and may not be given to another person due to potential side effects such as severe hemorrhage, <\/span>Mainichi.jp<\/span><\/a> reports<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the girl\u2019s appointment, Mimae reportedly demanded the girl get an abortion, which she refused, saying she wanted to keep the baby. Police believe he later gave her two doses of the drug under false pretenses in his brother\u2019s apartment on September 24, 2020, four days after the doctor\u2019s appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After taking the pills, she began to feel unwell and suspected the drugs had been to induce an abortion. She reported her suspicions to local police, who found mifepristone in her blood and urine samples. In October, she suffered a miscarriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mifepristone, the first pill in the abortion pill regimen, works to block the natural hormone progesterone, which helps to sustain the pregnancy and nourish the developing baby. Deprived of nutrients, the baby dies. Then the second pill, misoprostol, causes contractions and expels the deceased baby from the uterus.
