All three are aimed at allowing employers the ability to determine whether or not employees will receive coverage for abortion in health care plans. Employers who want to provide abortion coverage will then have to pay for the addition insurance rider.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2011-2012\/billengrossed\/Senate\/pdf\/2011-SEBS-0612.pdf\">Senate Bill 612<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This bill, which passed on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(ev2gdm45ozsnrymuh1gqud45))\/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&amp;objectname=2011-SB-0612\">27-11 vote<\/a>, seeks to amend the Insurance Code of 1956.\u00a0 It states that &#8220;[a]\u00a0qualified health plan \u2026 shall not provide coverage for elective abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Abortion coverage will be at the discretion of the employer: \u201can employer may purchase a option rider to provide coverage for an elective abortion.\u201d The bill then states two requirements that must be met for this rider to be valid, one of which is that it is the employer who \u201cpays the entire premium amount for the rider and the cost of the rider is not factored into any premium amount for which individual employees contribute \u2026 either directly or through a payroll deduction.\u201d The other is that notice of the rider be given to employees.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2011-2012\/billengrossed\/Senate\/pdf\/2011-SEBS-0613.pdf\">Senate Bill 613<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This bill, which passed on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(ev2gdm45ozsnrymuh1gqud45))\/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&amp;objectname=2011-SB-0613\">27-10 vote<\/a>, extends the provision of the bill discussed above to the Nonprofit Health Care Corporation Reform Act.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2011-2012\/billengrossed\/Senate\/pdf\/2011-SEBS-0614.pdf\">Senate Bill 614<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This bill seeks to put teeth into the above two bills by amending the Public Health Code to provide penalties for violation of the bills.<\/p>\n<p>Passing on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(ev2gdm45ozsnrymuh1gqud45))\/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&amp;objectname=2011-SB-0614\">28-10 vote<\/a>, this bill provides that the reimbursement for abortions through a health care plan are prohibited \u201cunless the reimbursement sought or accepted is from an optional rider,\u201d as provided for by the above two amendments.
