The twins were not expected until late March. Each baby weighed just over two pounds each at delivery. \u201cWhen the nurse brought them over to me, Garrett fit into her two hands,\u201d said the boys\u2019 mother, Nicole Lopez, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc10.com\/article\/news\/health\/new-heart-procedure-saves-mesa-micro-preemie-twins\/75-6d43adc2-dbf1-49f5-af5e-0047d09b7696\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABC10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 1px solid #e6e6e6;\" src=\"https:\/\/abc10.com\/embeds\/video\/75-8f6983a8-3737-4060-856a-6deee5b48056\/iframe\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with their early birth and tiny size came medical challenges, including a common congenital heart defect called patent ductus arteriosus, or PDA. Most babies have a blood vessel between the heart and the lungs that closes naturally after birth, but it\u2019s not uncommon for that not to happen in very premature babies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/what-is-a-patent-ductus-arteriosus-pda-2748627\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are born with the defect, which causes breathing issues. \u201cIf the PDA doesn\u2019t close, then it puts extra work on the lungs and on the heart. In a premature baby, it can damage the lungs if it\u2019s left long term,\u201d said Dr. Dan Miga, the twins\u2019 pediatric cardiologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-babies-amazing-device\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few years ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fixing this defect would have involved an open-chest surgery on these fragile babies, as well as a difficult recovery after such an invasive procedure. But now, all that\u2019s required is a tiny incision in a baby\u2019s leg to thread a needle with a tiny device on the end all the way to the site of the defect in the heart. The device will seal the defect, and the whole procedure leaves no scars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctors-twins-22-weeks-doctor-stepped-in\/\">Doctors offered no hope for twins born at 22 weeks. Then a new doctor stepped in.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBasically, no incision. No stitches. Literally no scar. By the next morning, you can\u2019t tell we\u2019ve been there,\u201d Dr. Miga stated. \u201cMedical advancements have given us the ability to treat this birth defect with a minimally invasive procedure that is helping them heal much faster than they otherwise would have,\u201d he told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/azbigmedia.com\/business\/identical-micro-preemie-twins-get-life-saving-procedure-at-banner-childrens\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AZ Big Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The twins had this procedure and are already recovering well, and are close to breathing on their own.
