{"id":239960,"date":"2021-02-15T11:46:41","date_gmt":"2021-02-15T17:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=239960"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:23:07","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:23:07","slug":"error-thailand-legalizes-abortion-demand-12-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/error-thailand-legalizes-abortion-demand-12-weeks\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Grave error&#8217;: Thailand legalizes abortion on demand up to 12 weeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/thailand-rejects-24-week-abortion-bill\">Right to Life UK<\/a>)\u00a0Thai politicians have rejected a proposal to introduce abortion on demand through to 24-weeks, but proceeded with introducing abortion on demand up to 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The new law, which came into effect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/2\/9\/thailand-legalises-early-abortions-pro-choice-groups-want-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today<\/a>, will make abortion legal throughout the first trimester of pregnancy on demand, for any reason, and legal after that point in cases where giving birth poses a physical or mental health risk to the mother, where the baby is disabled, or where the pregnancy is a result of rape.<\/p>\n<p>In January of this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/2\/9\/thailand-legalises-early-abortions-pro-choice-groups-want-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislators<\/a> in Thailand introduced amendments to the previous abortion law with its strong pro-life protections.<\/p>\n<p>The Move Forward Party (MFP) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/thailand\/general\/2040371\/historic-abortion-bill-passes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed an alternative law<\/a> that would have introduced abortion on demand through to 24 weeks, but in the end, the House voted in favour of the cabinet-sponsored bill introducing abortion on demand through to 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cpdY97GOK2I\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/2\/9\/thailand-legalises-early-abortions-pro-choice-groups-want-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Previously<\/a>, abortion had only been legal in cases where the pregnancy was the result of rape, where giving birth posed a physical or mental health risk to the mother, or where the baby was disabled. Importantly, these provisions mean that abortion was and is available after the first trimester if a physician judges that these criteria have been met.<\/p>\n<p>These changes have come into effect almost a year after a court ruled that the restrictions on abortion were unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>The move <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explained-what-are-the-amendments-in-thailands-abortion-law-7166734\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was opposed<\/a> by many of Thailand\u2019s conservative Theravada Buddhist population. A number of pro-abortion groups have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/2\/9\/thailand-legalises-early-abortions-pro-choice-groups-want-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticised<\/a> the move as not going far enough.<\/p>\n<p>Jihan Jacob, a legal adviser for Asia with the Center for Reproductive Rights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/2\/9\/thailand-legalises-early-abortions-pro-choice-groups-want-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cIt is a positive development to have certain legal grounds that allow abortion, but it is not enough to ensure that all pregnant women can access abortion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The changes will place Thailand among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/2\/9\/thailand-legalises-early-abortions-pro-choice-groups-want-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more permissive<\/a> countries on abortion in Southeast Asia, where Vietnam sets no term limits for abortion while the Philippines has a near total ban on abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/first-trimester-babies-complex\/\">First trimester babies aren\u2019t blobs of tissue \u2014 they\u2019re amazingly complex<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Change in abortion law across the world<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Thailand moves in the same direction as <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/abortion-introduced-argentina\">Argentina<\/a>, which has also recently removed protections for unborn children, Poland has recently introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/polish-legal-protection-for-unborn-babies-with-disabilities-comes-into-effect\">strong pro-life protections<\/a> in law which forbid discrimination against babies in the womb with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, lethal discrimination against disabled babies was permitted in Poland but late last year, Poland\u2019s Constitutional Tribunal <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/polands-top-court-votes-to-protect-babies-with-disabilities-from-eugenics-abortion\">ruled<\/a> that this discrimination was incompatible with the Constitution of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said: \u201cIt is saddening to see another country move in this direction, to see another country deny its own citizens the most basic right: the right to life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBritain made this mistake over 50 years ago and since then there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/52-years-of-abortion-in-the-uk\">over 9 million abortions<\/a>.
