{"id":239389,"date":"2021-02-05T17:37:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T23:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=239389"},"modified":"2021-02-05T17:58:51","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T23:58:51","slug":"pro-life-initiatives-senate-federal-taxpayer-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-initiatives-senate-federal-taxpayer-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Three pro-life initiatives introduced in U.S. Senate seek to end federal taxpayer funding of abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lee.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/press-releases?ID=84A54B92-F34C-4CC8-B383-DDD5FF5D0B0F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three pieces of pro-life legislation in an effort to curtail the Biden Administration\u2019s efforts to push for taxpayer-funded abortions: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion is not Health Care Act<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting Life in Health Savings Accounts Act<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting Life in Foreign Assistance Act.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach human life, born and unborn, has immeasurable dignity and worth,&#8221; said Sen. Lee. &#8220;The lives of both an unborn baby <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her mother matter; and healthcare should heal, protect, and preserve <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their lives. Our laws and use of taxpayer money should reflect that truth, which is why I have introduced these bills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, according to its own annual report, America\u2019s abortion giant Planned Parenthood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/2e\/da\/2eda3f50-82aa-4ddb-acce-c2854c4ea80b\/2018-2019_annual_report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over half a billion taxpayer dollars annually, while destroying the lives of 947 children each day under the guise of \u201chealth care.\u201d Sen. Lee\u2019s bills seek to dismantle the euphemisms used by the abortion industry to downplay the violence of abortion, and to strip the profitable and predatory abortion industry of millions of undeserved taxpayer dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion is not Health Care Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would first and foremost affirm in federal law that directly and intentionally killing innocent children in their mothers\u2019 wombs is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> health care. Additionally, the bill would end tax-deductible and subsidized abortions by amending Section 213 of U.S. tax code to forbid elective abortions from being eligible for a medical expense deduction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-things-america-lose-taxpayer-funded-abortion\/\">Three things America stands to lose with taxpayer-funded abortion<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting Life in Health Savings Accounts Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would strip the multi-billion-dollar abortion industry of its preferential tax breaks in health savings accounts. Under the current tax code, multiple types of tax-break savings accounts allow for the coverage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion procedures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a \u201cmedical expense,\u201d and this bill seeks to amend the code to explicitly prohibit special tax-advantage coverage for abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting Life in Foreign Assistance Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aims to codify into federal law the Mexico City Policy, which was in effect under the Trump Administration but was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-us-fund-abortions-overseas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by President Joe Biden in the first days of the his new administration, thus reinstating the use of American taxpayer dollars to fund abortions overseas. As Sen. Lee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lee.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2021\/2\/protecting-life-in-foreign-assistance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his speech discussing the bill, \u201cThe whole point of American foreign aid is to assist countries in times of need, and in support of a common interest between them and us. And yet, for many years our foreign aid dollars have been used to impose violent cultural imperialism\u2026 by promoting and providing for the practice of abortion.\u201d He continued, \u201cInstead of helping to preserve, strengthen, and sustain the lives of women and children abroad, our taxpayer dollars have been used to harm women\u2019s lives, and to end the lives of their unborn children\u2026 especially, baby girls.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If passed, these three pro-life initiatives will help affirm the dignity of all human beings by defining that abortion is not health care, stripping the abortion industry of taxpayer dollars, and halting the use of American money to kill innocent children abroad. \u201cWomen and unborn children everywhere have immeasurable dignity and worth, regardless of where they are from,\u201d said Sen. Lee. \u201cAnd they ought to be entitled to the right to life and protection from harm \u2013 regardless of who is in office.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a
