Abortion is painted as a solution to poverty, or as a stepping stone out of a life of poverty. But this idea has little to do with helping the poor \u2014 instead, it <em>eliminates<\/em> them. With many in Congress pushing to force taxpayers to fund all abortions for low-income women in the US under the guise of racial and female equality and justice, it is important to understand the truth.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, societal elites have labeled low-income people a &#8220;strain&#8221; on society for having children whom some say are likely to receive welfare benefits. Doe<\/i><\/a>\u00a0case, which held that states could exclude nontherapeutic abortions from coverage under their Medicaid programs, Justice Harry Blackmun \u2014 who had written the majority opinion in <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/432\/454\/#tab-opinion-1952317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> abortion was cheaper than welfare.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The cost of a non therapeutic abortion is far less than the cost of maternity care and delivery and holds no comparison whatever with the welfare cost that will burden the state for the new indigents and their support and the long long years ahead,&#8221;\u00a0he wrote in part.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, Democrat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-women-presidential-candidate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ellen McCormack,<\/a>\u00a0who ran in the 1976 presidential primary, expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic.org\/featured\/headline.php?ID=916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concerns<\/a> over taxpayer funded abortions\u00a0&#8220;[p]ut forth as a solution for the poor.&#8221;\u00a0In the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MKjpJJo4AsU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> below, McCormack was joined by Dr. Mildred Jefferson,\u00a0the first black woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehistorymakers.com\/biography\/dr-mildred-jefferson-41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first woman<\/a>\u00a0to be a surgical intern at Boston City Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jefferson once\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1976\/03\/01\/archives\/abortion-in-the-campaign-methodist-surgeon-leads-the-opposition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referred<\/a>\u00a0to abortion as \u201cclass war against the poor,\u201d and emphasized that there is \u201cno benefit to use the money to help the poor to get rid of the babies of the poor,\u201d adding that &#8220;we must find better means of solving the social problems than getting rid of the people that caused the problems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MKjpJJo4AsU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, Dr. Jefferson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?7052-1\/pro-life-women-news-conference\">noted<\/a>\u00a0how the abortion lobby used the poor to maintain abortion access, calling abortion a form of \u201cnew slavery.\u201d She then claimed abortion proponents \u201chide the fact that their social planning abortion policies would eliminate the target races.\u201d She called abortion \u201cnot only genocide\u201d but \u201cnational suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis dreadful alliance has used the poor as pawns in its battle to maintain abortion access. It applies a fascist solution which they call liberal to keep down the cost of caring for the poor. They get rid of those who are going to run up the costs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fstudentsforlife%2Fvideos%2F292749274737345%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=476\" width=\"476\" height=\"591\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The targeting of the Black community<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jefferson was not alone. Many leaders of her time, including <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hyde-amendment-was-supported-by-black-civil-rights-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black leaders<\/a>, believed that\u00a0abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-falsely-dismisses-abortion-black-genocide-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted<\/a> their community.\u00a0Government-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/title-x-curb-population-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family planning<\/a> and abortion have their roots in eugenics and are correctly viewed with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-falsely-dismisses-abortion-black-genocide-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspicion<\/a> by many groups.<\/p>\n<p>In 1968, Fordham law professor Norman Rice suggested the liberalization of abortion would lead to &#8220;coercion of welfare clients and other poor persons to undergo abortions,&#8221; according to the Saranac Lake Adirondack Daily Enterprise.\u00a0He then called legalizing abortion a &#8220;form of genocide, perhaps more appropriately called pooricide.&#8221; He added,\u00a0\u201cThe idea seems to be to eliminate poverty by eliminating the poor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A July 1970 letter by Brenda Hyson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itsabouttimebpp.com\/Chapter_History\/pdf\/New_York\/NY_Chapter_History.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in the Black Panther Newspaper attacked the motives behind legalized abortion in New York. &#8220;To the Black woman,&#8217; the welfare mothers, it is an announcement of death before birth,&#8221; it read. &#8220;This will create a situation where a welfare mother is told that she will now receive additional financial assistance for the child she is expecting; and the solution provided by the Government is a genocidal abortion. In order to solve the problem of no means to take care of her child, the law will allow a mother to &#8220;legally&#8221; murder her unborn child.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A similar observation was made by comedian <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dick-gregory-government-funded-abortion-birth-control-programs-equals-genocide-blacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dick Gregory<\/a>\u00a0in a 1971 op-ed entitled, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=ntwDAAAAMBAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">My Answer to Genocide<\/a>,&#8221; published in Ebony Magazine. &#8220;There is ample evidence that government programs designed for poor black folks emphasize birth control and abortion availability, both measures obviously designed to limit black population.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1977, journalist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/category\/samuel-yette\/\">Samuel Yette<\/a>, the first Black reporter hired by Newsweek Magazine, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?id=YDQmAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=Nv4FAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=1050,1435927&amp;dq=birth+control+fannie+lou+hamer&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> a piece on civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer, stating, &#8220;It is still a society in which an injured man must show his ability to pay before getting hospital services, but his daughter or wife can be aborted or fed birth control pills at public expense.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/black-history-month-exposes-21st-century-genocide\/\">This Black History Month, watch the film that exposes 21st century<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yette continued, &#8220;Instead of seeking ways to feed the hungry, the back stage plan was to get the poor unwittingly to endorse a plan to eliminate from the society those who were hungry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_172365\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p>\u201cGiven the history of the genocidal practices and public policies impacted on Black people\u2026 it is barely believable that any significant number of Black people\u2026 could condone\u2026 much less demand public policies and financing the destruction of human life on either side of the womb,\u201d Yette\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=2211&amp;dat=19850713&amp;id=PyImAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=Tf4FAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=2636,69871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0an audience in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>In 1977, syndicated columnist Nick Thimmesch called out what he described as &#8220;middle and upper class white spokespersons&#8221; upset over a prohibition on taxpayer-funded abortions for poor women.\u00a0&#8220;[T]heir logic&#8230; dictates that it is the poor who deserves abortion, which is as colossal a put down of the poor particularly blacks as I have ever heard,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Thimmesch pointed to &#8220;a fair amount of racism in the abortion blinge.&#8221; He suggested that those advocating government-funded abortion believe there are too many minorities and poor people in society. He noted the attitude is,\u00a0&#8220;Therefore, abort them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The abortion industry&#8217;s prejudice against the poor and minorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion doctor Edward Allred, co-founder of the California based Family Planning Associates Medical Group, viewed the poor as simply potential dependents on welfare. In 1980 Allred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2002-jul-26-sp-docallred26-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> a reporter from the San Diego Union that he wanted to stem the tide of the \u201cnew influx of Hispanic immigrants.&#8221; He suggested that he would &#8220;set up a clinic in Mexico for free if I could&#8230; The survival of our society could be at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a sullen black woman of 17 or 18 can decide to have a baby and get welfare and food stamps and become a burden to us all, it\u2019s time to stop. In parts of South Los Angeles having babies for welfare is the only industry these people have,\u201d the abortionist also stated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the 1990s, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s first <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-suspicion-black-genocide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black female president<\/a>\u00a0Faye Wattleton\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0muJOHEZFTM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0to Senator Bob Dornan that Planned Parenthood&#8217;s donor base consisted of people who wanted welfare mothers to stop having babies.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0muJOHEZFTM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clip<\/a> below, Wattleton can be heard telling Dornan, &#8220;As a matter of fact&#8230; we have received contributions from people who want to support us because they want all welfare mothers and all Black women to stop having children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0muJOHEZFTM\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Members of Planned Parenthood&#8217;s board also held this same view.\u00a0A 1969\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/gst\/abstract.html?res=9D05E5DB133BE73ABC4153DFB4668382679EDE&amp;legacy=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0published by the New York Times quoted one \u201cpreponderantly white and well-to-do\u201d Planned Parenthood board member as stating (emphasis added), \u201cWhat it all comes down to is that <em>we want the\u00a0poor to stop breeding<\/em>\u00a0while we retain our freedom to have large families. They will learn, if they don&#8217;t already sense it, that a great many of their white fellow citizens regard them as social pests whose offspring should be nipped in the larval stage,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/honduras-secure-preborn-babies-right-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in part<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in 1992, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/roe-v-wade-abortion-pill-eliminate-poor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ron Weddington<\/a>, a co-counsel of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/09\/27\/books\/she-put-the-v-in-roe-v-wade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ex-husband<\/a>\u00a0of <em>Roe<\/em> attorney Sarah Weddington, suggested using the abortion pill as a way to eliminate &#8220;poor babies.&#8221; His letter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/press-releases\/judicial-watch-releases-special-report-clinton-ru-486-files\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncovered<\/a>\u00a0by Judicial Watch, can be read in part below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2026 you can start immediately\u00a0<strong>to eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy and poor segment of our country<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>No, I\u2019m not advocating some sort of mass extinction of these unfortunate people. Crime, drugs and disease are already doing that.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>The problem is that their numbers are not only replaced but increased by the birth of millions of babies who can\u2019t afford to have babies. We don\u2019t need more cannon fodder. We don\u2019t need more parishioners. We don\u2019t need more cheap labor.
