Joe Biden, inaugurated as the nation’s 46th president last week, is only the second Catholic ever to hold the office. While he openly celebrates his faith<\/a>\u00a0and considers himself a devout Catholic, he breaks with the Catholic Church in that he is an ardent supporter of abortion. While this is troubling for Catholics who abide by Church teaching, one pro-abortion “Catholic” group is celebrating.<\/p>\n

Catholics for Choice, the organization which once sent Planned Parenthood love letters<\/a> for Valentine’s Day, is applauding Biden’s break with the Catholic Church on pro-life teaching. While the Catholic Church is one of the staunchest defenders of life from the moment of fertilization onward, Catholics for Choice would like to see that change. Calling abortion access a “Catholic social justice value,” Catholics for Choice released a statement<\/a> urging Biden to quickly expand access to abortion (emphasis added below), citing as a reason\u00a0\u2014 unbelievably \u2014 the church’s call to “human dignity”:<\/p>\n

We at Catholics for Choice welcome Joe Biden as the first prochoice Catholic president & call on him to protect & expand abortion rights in the first days of his presidency. President Biden frequently connects his care for the poor, the sick & the vulnerable to his Catholic faith.<\/em><\/p>\n

As a longtime champion of women\u2019s rights and the rights of marginalized people, Joe Biden surely understands that policies like the #GlobalGagRule, the #HydeAmendment & the #HelmsAmendment inflict disproportionate suffering on the poor, the sick and the powerless.<\/em><\/p>\n

Joe Biden has dissented from Catholic teaching on issues related to marriage equality, transgender rights and contraception because he realizes that the church\u2019s teachings on these topics do not reflect the church\u2019s greater call to justice, equality and human dignity<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

We call on the President to use his conscience and his commitment to human rights in the same way by acknowledging that abortion access is a Catholic social justice value<\/strong> and working to improve access for those who need it.<\/em><\/p>\n

… As one of the 60% of U.S. Catholics who supports abortion rights,\u00a0<\/em>Joe Biden can show a divided nation that people of faith can not only support abortion rights, they can do so as an expression of their commitment to justice that is grounded in their religious belief.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

If more people of faith truly knew what “abortion rights” look like<\/a>, would they still feel the same?<\/p>\n
