Earlier this week,<\/span> The Blaze<\/span><\/a> reported on a verbal attack published by the<\/span>\u00a0Times Union<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of Albany, New York, against US Rep. Elise Stefanik. Among other below-the-belt jabs, the piece \u2014 which has since been removed from the <\/span>Times Union <\/span>site and is unavailable on the authors\u2019 blog, which has been made<\/span> private<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 took aim at Stefanik for being \u201cchildless.\u201d Lale Davidson, one of the piece\u2019s authors, has a long history of financial<\/span> contributions<\/span><\/a> to left-wing candidates and organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stefanik and her husband responded<\/a> to the attack by calling the publication of such remarks as “a new low… truly heinous and wildly inappropriate. The shameful statement is not only inherently sexist, but also hateful, abusive, and heartless.” They ended their joint statement by saying, “Like millions of families, we hope and pray that we will be blessed by becoming parents.”<\/p>\n

This sort of maternity-based insult is nothing new from advocates of “reproductive choice.” During her Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Justice Amy Coney Barrett was<\/span> attacked<\/span><\/a> for being the adoptive mother of two Haitian children. One<\/span> critic<\/span><\/a> likened her to \u201cwhite colonizers,\u201d while<\/span> another<\/span><\/a> questioned the legality of the adoptions, insinuating that the children might have been illegitimately taken from their birth families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And while Stefanik has been insulted for having no<\/em> children, abortion advocates are well-known for denigrating other women for having too many<\/em>. When David and Victoria Beckham welcomed their fourth child, for example, they were\u00a0<\/span>accused<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of being \u201cselfish\u201d and \u201cbad role models.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All of these attacks come from the political philosophy that professes itself to be feminist, and therefore not to judge women based on their biology. But gone are the days of holding as role models women like Dr. Elaine Heffner, who<\/span> said<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Women do not have to sacrifice personhood if they are mothers. They do not have to sacrifice motherhood in order to be persons. Liberation was meant to expand women’s opportunities, not to limit them. The self-esteem that has been found in new pursuits can also be found in mothering.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

It is sheer hypocrisy for a movement which claims to embrace and affirm <\/span>all<\/span><\/i> women\u2019s pursuits to simultaneously attack its female opponents on the basis of their maternity \u2014 or lack thereof.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But “progressive” abortion advocates are not true champions of women\u2019s interests. They tell women our biology should not be an obstacle to realizing our goals, but also tell us contraceptives and abortions \u2014\u00a0which contravene our natural biological processes as females \u2014 are necessary to achieve those same dreams. They denigrate us for choosing to be mothers, and for choosing not to be mothers. They\u00a0<\/span>decry<\/span><\/a> the judging of women based on their promiscuous sexual behavior, but tacitly<\/span> endorse<\/span><\/a> chastity-shaming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, according to abortion advocates, women should be free to be and do anything we wish \u2026 on paper only<\/em>. In reality, if our actions or beliefs run counter to their agenda, that rhetoric goes straight out the window. Then, all bets are off, and everything \u2014 including those things which define our femininity \u2014 is fair game for attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
