(Right to Life UK<\/a>) Complications, including hemorrhage, uterine perforation and\/or sepsis, following a \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortion are likely to have been\u00a0vastly underreported<\/a>, new [UK] Government data suggests.<\/p>\n

In response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted last year, the Government\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that between April and June of 2020 \u2013 the first three months after \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortions were made available \u2013 there were 23,061 \u2018DIY\u2019 abortions, and one reported complication [in the United Kingdom].<\/p>\n

As the MP, Sally-Ann Hart, who first called attention to this data\u00a0said<\/a>: \u201cThis would mean that the average rate of complication for medical abortions at a similar gestation over the past five years was over seventeen times higher than the complication rate for home abortions earlier this year\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not only highly unlikely \u2013 that complications would radically reduce in a home setting versus a medical setting \u2013 but, some may say, ridiculous\u201d.<\/p>\n

The data\u00a0suggests<\/a>\u00a0that either \u2018DIY\u2019 abortions without any clinical supervision are significantly less dangerous than medical abortions with clinical supervision \u2013 a conclusion that would raise serious questions about the standard of care in abortion centres in England and Wales \u2013 or there are serious issues with the quality of recording and reporting incidences of complications arising from \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortions.<\/p>\n

DIY abortions in England, Wales and Scotland<\/strong><\/p>\n

A number of senior politicians have been\u00a0outspoken<\/a>\u00a0about the many dangers posed to women by unsupervised \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortions.<\/p>\n

In a recent\u00a0article<\/a>, Baroness Philippa Stroud criticised the Government for introducing a dangerous and harmful \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortion concession as part of efforts to \u2018Protect the NHS\u2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said that the decision to allow \u2018pills-by-post\u2019 or \u2018at home\u2019 abortion represents \u201cthe largest change to abortion law since 1967 and was done without any parliamentary scrutiny or public consultation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Police investigations and coercion<\/strong><\/p>\n

Baroness Stroud\u00a0highlighted<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthere are at least 52 cases officially reported to the Department of Health and Social Care of women who were provided pills-by-post beyond 10 weeks gestation, including one case where the unborn child was at 28 weeks gestation (beyond the legal limit)\u201d.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0leaked email<\/a>\u00a0from a Regional Chief Midwife at NHS England and NHS Improvement concerning the \u201cescalating risks\u201d around \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortion revealed that one woman was able to receive abortion pills at 32 weeks\u2019 pregnant and mentions \u201c3 police investigations [\u2026] linked to these incidents\u201d, one of which is a murder investigation \u201cas there is a concern that the baby was live born\u201d after a woman used the \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortion service.<\/p>\n

Alongside the medical complications of \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortion, the Baroness\u00a0decried<\/a>\u00a0the potential for abuse and coercion, which becomes difficult to detect without in-person consultation.<\/p>\n

A series of\u00a0undercover mystery shopper investigations<\/a>\u00a0led by Kevin Duffy who was previously a director at abortion provider MSI Reproductive Choices,\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0how a number of women were able to obtain pills for their children by pretending to be pregnant themselves. Other women in the investigation were able to obtain abortion pills after the 10-week limit.<\/p>\n

Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said: \u201cThere are so many obvious and serious problems that arise from \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortions outside of a clinical setting. The latest being that complication rates are likely to be seriously obscured\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stark contrast between the number of complications arising from medical abortions in a clinical setting compared to those being done outside of that setting without medical supervision i.e. \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortions, either indicates that there is a serious problem with reporting of complications, or that there is something seriously wrong with the safety standards in abortion clinics in England and Wales\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously all abortion is lethal for unborn babies but once again, those who are pushing for \u2018DIY\u2019 abortion to become a permanent feature of the law are doing so with full knowledge of the dangers that it poses to women. Contrary to their rhetoric, abortion providers like BPAS and MSI Reproductive Choices, are now showing little concern or care for women \u2013 they appear to instead be more concerned with expanding abortion access regardless of the effect this has on women\u2019s health\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n
