In a tweet that has shocked many, the Chinese government recently referred to the horrific genocide and forced sterilization of Uighur women as the \u201cprocess of eradicating extremism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStudy shows that in the process of eradicating extremism, the minds of Uygur women in Xinjiang were emancipated and gender equality and reproductive health were promoted, making them no longer baby-making machines. They are more confident and independent,\u201d read the tweet posted by China\u2019s Embassy on Thursday. The tweet was removed from the platform in under 24 hours. The Chinese government tweet linked to a China Daily <\/span>article<\/span><\/a> that attempts to rationalize and obfuscate the horrors occurring in Xinjiang. The article claimed that \u201cthe penetration of religious extremism made implementing family planning policy in southern Xinjiang, including Kashgar and Hotan prefectures, particularly difficult.\u201d Only by \u201cthe process of eradicating extremism\u201d were \u201cthe minds of Uygur women… emancipated,\u201d and \u201cgender equality and reproductive health were promoted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chinese Communist Party\u2019s preferred methods to \u201ceradicate extremism\u201d amongst the Uighur people are <\/span>well-documented<\/span><\/a>. They include <\/span>concentration camps<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>forced sterilization<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>rape and sexual torture<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>electrocution<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>forced late-term abortion and infanticide<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>organ harvesting from living \u201cdonors,\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0among other horrors. Uighur women have been <\/span>forced to share beds<\/span><\/a> with Han Chinese party members who would spy on them. China, a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, has attempted to deny <\/span>multiple<\/span><\/a> firsthand<\/span><\/a> reports<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>forced<\/span><\/a> sterilization<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe changes were not caused by \u2018forced sterilization\u2019 of the Uygur population,\u201d claims the article. But <\/span>budget lines from Hotan<\/span><\/a> show \u201cperformance targets\u201d of IUDs and sterilization procedures for the area that, according to Foreign Policy, \u201crepresents more sterilizations than China performed in the 20 years between 1998 and 2018 combined.\u201d Birth and death rates in the region are now being concealed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And though the article claims that falling population rates among Uighurs is \u201cdue more to personal choice than government policy,\u201d the same article states that \u201call ethnic groups should implement a unified family planning policy allowing couples in urban areas to have two children, and those in rural areas three.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heart-wrenching <\/span>personal experiences<\/span><\/a> of Uighur political refugees have come to light in recent years. <\/span>Mihrigul Tursun<\/span><\/a> was granted asylum and gave testimony before Congress in 2018 about how, while visiting her family in Xinjiang, she was detained at the airport, separated from her eight-week-old triplets, and subjected to torture and forced sterilization. While separated from her babies, all three underwent some unknown surgical procedure resulting in a scar on their necks, and one died under mysterious circumstances as a result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
