(Save The Storks<\/a>)\u00a0When\u00a0<\/span>it comes to unplanned pregnancy, the most common choices for U.S. women are abortion or parenting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But there is a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>thir<\/span>d option,\u00a0<\/span>one that<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>often<\/span>\u00a0left out of the conversation when discussing\u00a0<\/span>reproductive right<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 adoption.\u00a0<\/span>In fact, l<\/span>ess than\u00a0<\/span>4 percent<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>of unplanned pregnancies result in adoption.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bottom line?\u00a0 A<\/span>ccording to\u00a0<\/span>a piece from Olga Khazan in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Atlantic<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>historically<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>a<\/span>mong American women for whom carrying a child to term would be safe, adoption is a remarkably unpopular course of action.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So why is adoption not seen as a viable option?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>One of the main reasons<\/span>\u00a0is a misunderstanding about adoption in our culture<\/span>, and a lack of awareness for the way adoption works<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said Beth Woods. Woods is the executive director\u00a0<\/span>of Hope\u2019s Promise, a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>domestic and\u00a0<\/span>international\u00a0<\/span>adoption agency based in Colorado.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he adoption process has drastically changed over the past 30 years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Originally a closed adoption process was practiced\u00a0\u2014<\/span>\u00a0one where information between adoptees and birth\u00a0<\/span>families<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0not shared\u00a0<\/span>and birth families rarely knew who their\u00a0<\/span>child\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>adoptive family<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until a generation of adoptees grew up and started talking about\u00a0<\/span>how the closed adoption process left\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0unresolved grief<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0the feeling that they were unwanted by their birth parents<\/span>, even<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when<\/span>\u00a0they loved and were loved by their adoptive families<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now\u00a0<\/span>95\u00a0percent<\/a> of adoptions in the United States are open. Open adoption means both the adoptive and birth families <\/span>are in<\/span> contact before, during and after the process. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOpen adoption has become the primary way adoption is practiced in the U<\/span>.<\/span>S<\/span>.<\/span>,\u201d Woods said. \u201cIt helps kids know their story, know they weren\u2019t rejected or abandoned. For adoptive parents, it helps them provide answers for kids when they have questions about their <\/span>biological\u00a0<\/span>family history, about where they came from, who they are. It is a way to support love between the child and their birth family.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adoptive families\u00a0<\/span>also have the freedom to<\/span>\u00a0establish the kind of relationship they want with birth\u00a0<\/span>families<\/span>\u00a0and create an environment where the child\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0know both families.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe process is voluntary,\u201d Woods explained. \u201c<\/span>With open adoption<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>expectant mot<\/span>hers<\/span>\u00a0have<\/span>\u00a0the power and control to pick the family<\/span>\u00a0for their child<\/span>\u00a0and stay in contact, this reduces a lot of those\u00a0<\/span>fears<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Emotional Toll\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O<\/span>pen adoption has\u00a0<\/span>helped foster<\/span>\u00a0strong families and better mental health for all involved,\u00a0<\/span>but\u00a0<\/span>it hasn\u2019t fully promoted a higher adoption rate. That\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>because the<\/span>\u00a0choice to place a child for adoption\u00a0<\/span>remains emotionally difficult<\/span>\u00a0for<\/span>\u00a0expectant<\/span>\u00a0mothers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Jessica Phillips found out she was pregnant<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0she knew she was not able to raise a child<\/span>.\u00a0 She<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was not with the father anymore<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>he didn\u2019t know what to do<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Her own mother was the first person to suggest adoption to her. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard the word \u2018adoption\u2019 I got angry,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Phillips<\/span>\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIt made me mad to go against my mothering instincts to place my child with someone and not be that child\u2019s mother.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But a<\/span>t the time, s<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>admits, \u201cI didn\u2019t know much about it. I didn\u2019t know what the process was. I soon learned there is a big misconception about what adoption is or isn\u2019t. What you see on the news or in movies \u2013 that\u2019s not necessarily what it is.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S<\/span>he decided to meet with an\u00a0<\/span>adoption\u00a0<\/span>agency<\/span>. The agency\u00a0<\/span>gave her a book of profiles of adoptive parents. It didn\u2019t take long until she came across Brian and Natalie\u2019s profile.<\/span>\u00a0She says she instantly felt connected to them<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>his\u00a0<\/span>feeling\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>confirmed<\/span>\u00a0the first time they all met in person.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Phillip<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0daughter Kaylee was born on June\u00a0<\/span>7<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a02007<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She c<\/span>hose to have two days with Kaylee alone in the hospital.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It was important for her to have those 48 short hours with her.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Afterward, the families arranged a commissioning at the hospital.\u00a0<\/span>Phillip<\/span>\u2019s pastor came to facilitate a ceremony where Jessica was able to celebrate being Kaylee\u2019s mother and Brian and Natalie becoming Kaylee\u2019s parents.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time I tell my story I still get choked up. Even 13 years later. Not because I doubt the decision. I\u2019m just so overwhelmed by God\u2019s goodness,\u201d she said. \u201cI see how adoption is such a blessing. Not just for the adoptive family, but for the birth mother too. It\u2019s such a blessing. God was in it.\u00a0He\u00a0thought of every little thing.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Shifting away from negative stigmas<\/span><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span><\/b>elebrating and promoting the beauty of adoption<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pregnancy resource centers have\u00a0<\/span>long\u00a0<\/span>been advocates of the adoption process and are\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>ing to\u00a0<\/span>change<\/span>\u00a0the stigma<\/span>\u00a0around adoption<\/span>, but there\u2019s still\u00a0work\u00a0to be done.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Every PRC should be prepared and equipped to talk with women about the option of adoption<\/span>,\u201d Woods said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIt should be\u00a0<\/span>part of the\u00a0<\/span>pregnancy options\u00a0<\/span>education\u00a0<\/span>they<\/span>\u00a0do with women<\/span>. It\u2019s important to put\u00a0<\/span>it on equal footing\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0parenting<\/span>. W<\/span>e have to get away from\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>idea if you choose it, you\u2019re not a fit parent<\/span>, because this is not true.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, she notes, \u201cequipping\u00a0<\/span>churches to support women who choose<\/span>\u00a0to place their child for adoption<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0same\u00a0<\/span>way they\u00a0<\/span>would with families who adopt\u00a0<\/span>would be a huge step forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The truth of the matter is<\/span>, as a culture \u201cwe have to empower women to think about life choices, but also life choices that could include the potential of another loving family raising that child,\u201d Woods said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0<\/span>own s<\/span>on\u2019s story is a prime example of the ways an open adoption can include this potential. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>My oldest son\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>birth\u00a0<\/span>mom asked him to be a junior groomsman at her wedding<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the wedding he got to meet her family, who by extension is his family.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After meeting everyone he\u00a0<\/span>turned to\u00a0<\/span>Woods<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>said\u00a0<\/span>\u201c\u2019<\/span>Man, mom,\u00a0<\/span>I never knew how many\u00a0<\/span>more\u00a0<\/span>people<\/span>\u00a0there were<\/span>\u00a0who loved me<\/span>.<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0A<\/span>s an adoptive mom that\u2019s exactly what you want for your child<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0You want them to know there\u2019s never too many people\u00a0<\/span>in th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0world\u00a0<\/span>who can<\/span>\u00a0love you<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
