Woods is the executive director\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of Hope\u2019s Promise, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">domestic and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">international\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adoption agency based in Colorado.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he adoption process has drastically changed over the past 30 years.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Originally a closed adoption process was practiced\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0one where information between adoptees and birth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">families<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0not shared\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and birth families rarely knew who their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">child\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adoptive family<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It wasn\u2019t until a generation of adoptees grew up and started talking about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">how the closed adoption process left\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0unresolved grief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the feeling that they were unwanted by their birth parents<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, even<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">when<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0they loved and were loved by their adoptive families<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Now\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adoption.com\/6-open-adoption-facts-will-surprise-you#:~:text=95%25%20of%20U.S.%20infant%20adoptions,adoptions%20are%20closed%20or%20confidential.\">95\u00a0percent<\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of adoptions in the United States are open. Open adoption means both the adoptive and birth families <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">are in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> contact before, during and after the process. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cOpen adoption has become the primary way adoption is practiced in the U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d Woods said. \u201cIt helps kids know their story, know they weren\u2019t rejected or abandoned. For adoptive parents, it helps them provide answers for kids when they have questions about their <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">biological\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">family history, about where they came from, who they are. It is a way to support love between the child and their birth family.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Adoptive families\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">also have the freedom to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0establish the kind of relationship they want with birth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">families<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and create an environment where the child\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">can<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0know both families.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe process is voluntary,\u201d Woods explained. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">With open adoption<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">expectant mot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the power and control to pick the family<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0for their child<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and stay in contact, this reduces a lot of those\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">fears<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/couple-adopts-six-siblings-losing-preborn-36\/\">\u2018Love harder\u2019: Couple adopts six siblings after losing preborn son at 36 weeks<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Emotional Toll\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pen adoption has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">helped foster<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0strong families and better mental health for all involved,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it hasn\u2019t fully promoted a higher adoption rate. That\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">because the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0choice to place a child for adoption\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">remains emotionally difficult<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0expectant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0mothers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When Jessica Phillips found out she was pregnant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0she knew she was not able to raise a child<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 She<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was not with the father anymore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he didn\u2019t know what to do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Her own mother was the first person to suggest adoption to her. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhen I heard the word \u2018adoption\u2019 I got angry,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Phillips<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt made me mad to go against my mothering instincts to place my child with someone and not be that child\u2019s mother.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t the time, s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">admits, \u201cI didn\u2019t know much about it. I didn\u2019t know what the process was. I soon learned there is a big misconception about what adoption is or isn\u2019t. What you see on the news or in movies \u2013 that\u2019s not necessarily what it is.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he decided to meet with an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adoption\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">agency<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The agency\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">gave her a book of profiles of adoptive parents. It didn\u2019t take long until she came across Brian and Natalie\u2019s profile.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0She says she instantly felt connected to them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">his\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">feeling\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">confirmed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the first time they all met in person.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Phillip<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0daughter Kaylee was born on June\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">7<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a02007<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">She c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hose to have two days with Kaylee alone in the hospital.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It was important for her to have those 48 short hours with her.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Afterward, the families arranged a commissioning at the hospital.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Phillip<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019s pastor came to facilitate a ceremony where Jessica was able to celebrate being Kaylee\u2019s mother and Brian and Natalie becoming Kaylee\u2019s parents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cEvery time I tell my story I still get choked up. Even 13 years later. Not because I doubt the decision. I\u2019m just so overwhelmed by God\u2019s goodness,\u201d she said. \u201cI see how adoption is such a blessing. Not just for the adoptive family, but for the birth mother too. It\u2019s such a blessing. God was in it.\u00a0He\u00a0thought of every little thing.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shifting away from negative stigmas<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">C<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">elebrating and promoting the beauty of adoption<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pregnancy resource centers have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">long\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">been advocates of the adoption process and are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the stigma<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0around adoption<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, but there\u2019s still\u00a0work\u00a0to be done.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Every PRC should be prepared and equipped to talk with women about the option of adoption<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d Woods said.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt should be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">part of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pregnancy options\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">education\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0do with women<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. It\u2019s important to put\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it on equal footing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0parenting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e have to get away from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">idea if you choose it, you\u2019re not a fit parent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, because this is not true.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Additionally, she notes, \u201cequipping\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">churches to support women who choose<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to place their child for adoption<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0same\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">way they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">would with families who adopt\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">would be a huge step forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span oldest son\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">birth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mom asked him to be a junior groomsman at her wedding<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d she said.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">At the wedding he got to meet her family, who by many\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0there were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0who loved me<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s an adoptive mom that\u2019s exactly what you want for your child<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0You want them to know there\u2019s never too many people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0world\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">who can<\/span><span
