The news came as the nation grappled with issues of racial equity, civil unrest over police brutality, and allegations of racism, along with the growing emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood has for decades downplayed the racist beliefs of its founder, Margaret Sanger, lauding her as a heroine. They failed to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-reckoning-racist-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remove Sanger<\/a> from a place of honor until\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-systemic-racism-white-supremacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 2020<\/a>, when hundreds of past and current Planned Parenthood of Greater New York employees published an open\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saveppgny.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/23\/nyregion\/ny-planned-parenthood-laura-mcquade.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur\">alleged<\/a>\u00a0the abortion organization was &#8220;founded by a racist, white woman&#8221; and had a &#8220;present steeped in white supremacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_237198\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-237198\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-237198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Planned-Parenthood-former-staffer-on-Twitter-said-she-experienced-racism.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Planned Parenthood former staffer on Twitter said she experienced racism\" width=\"504\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Planned-Parenthood-former-staffer-on-Twitter-said-she-experienced-racism.jpg 504w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Planned-Parenthood-former-staffer-on-Twitter-said-she-experienced-racism-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Planned-Parenthood-former-staffer-on-Twitter-said-she-experienced-racism-500x237.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-237198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planned Parenthood former staffer on Twitter said she experienced racism<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Additional employees at other affiliates told Buzzfeed News they had <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-employees-accuse-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">witnessed<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;open racism,&#8221; endured &#8220;segregated&#8221; offices, and experienced overall unequal treatment of Black and minority employees at multiple Planned Parenthood centers across the country. Planned Parenthood\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaroleNovielli\/status\/1311294130622996481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">systemic racism<\/a>\u201d was later acknowledged by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-racist-affiliates-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple affiliates<\/a>.\u00a0An internal audit also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/internal-audit-racism-planned-parenthood-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> that Planned Parenthood Federation of America had a racism problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cm_2p-F1848\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>NARAL Pro-Choice America<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-employees-accuse-abortion-organization-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 2020<\/a>, NARAL staffers publicly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-employees-accuse-abortion-organization-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a>\u00a0the organization of racism, claiming Black and Brown staffers at NARAL \u201cfelt tokenized.\u201d They told Buzzfeed the organization has a \u201crace equity and inclusivity problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NARAL has been a long-time\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-untouched-systemic-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defender<\/a>\u00a0of Planned Parenthood\u2019s eugenicist founder Margaret Sanger, even using her name in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NARAL\/status\/838457584176807936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraising<\/a>\u00a0efforts. And, they have their own checkered past and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/not-just-planned-parenthood-naral-eugenicist-founders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racist founders<\/a>\u00a0as two of NARAL\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070922133608\/http:\/\/oasis.lib.harvard.edu\/oasis\/deliver\/~sch00781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three member<\/a>\u00a0pre-formation planning committee were men who held and promoted radical racist, eugenicist ideas about population control.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the allegations, NARAL\u2019s president Ilyse Hogue remains in her position.\u00a0Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-employees-accuse-abortion-organization-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ANSIRH\/UCSF<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>July of 2020, abortionist <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-financial-conflicts-interest-politicians-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Grossman,<\/a>\u00a0a favored mainstream media source for information on abortion pill expansion efforts,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-untouched-systemic-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a> that organizations he is associated with have held back minorities,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrDGrossman\/status\/1278768982221152256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeting<\/a>, \u201c[\u2026] we recognize that racism and white supremacy are deeply ingrained within our academic and research institutions, within medicine and medical research and practice, and in our own backyard of Oakland, where ANSIRH\u2019s [Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health] office is located.\u201d Grossman serves as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/staff-members\/daniel-grossman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">director<\/a>\u00a0for this University of California San Francisco (UCSF) program. F*** it. We&#8217;ll call it out. Remember when your current president asked our Black co-founder out to lunch to pressure her to stop encouraging your staff of color to organize and expose the racist sexual harasser-enabling former president y\u2019all were continually celebrating?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/national-abortion-federation-sexual-harassment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0former and current employees of NAF had accused the organization of failing to protect employees against alleged sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p>ReproJobs&#8217; lengthy thread read in part:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>They had a long conversation about wage inequity at your org, particularly among staff of color and the president said \u2018that\u2019s just the way it is and everyone has to live with 6 roommates at some point\u2019 after she told you about staff who said they couldn\u2019t afford their abortions&#8230;Have you all listened to, learned from, and implemented recommendations from the droves of Black and Brown staff who left the organization because of the behaviors of white leadership? It states in part, &#8220;In terms of work-place culture, some employees at NAF are blatantly disrespectful and downright abusive. NAF claims to be a feminist organization that wants to fight gender oppression, yet NAF continues to defend and protect sexual harassers and racists who work here. Despite multitudes of complaints to HR, these people still work at NAF and some even continue to take on more powerful positions\u2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Organization for Women (NOW)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/president-pro-abortion-now-resigns-allegations-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 2020<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/national-organization-for-women-president-toni-van-pelt-steps-down-after-racism-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Beast<\/a>\u00a0reporter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eshugerman\/status\/1269288514706907139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emily Shugerman<\/a>\u00a0conducted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/national-organization-for-women-members-say-racism-ran-rampant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interviews<\/a>\u00a0with nearly a dozen members and employees of NOW, who claim women of color were being \u201checkled, silenced, or openly disparaged at NOW meetings and offices.\u201d As a result,\u00a026 of 35 NOW state chapters signed a letter demanding NOW\u2019s president,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200820232928\/https:\/\/now.org\/staff\/toni-van-pelt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toni Van Pelt<\/a>, to step down. The pressure led to Van Pelt&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/now-president-steps-down-after-racism-allegations\/ar-BB182AZi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resignation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of acting swiftly to condemn and weed out racism and transphobia within NOW, much of the organization has worked to protect and defend this leadership,\u201d California executive board members wrote,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/now-chapter-leaders-launch-new-campaign-to-oust-president-toni-van-pelt-over-allegations-of-racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the Daily Beast.\u00a0Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/president-pro-abortion-now-resigns-allegations-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Population Council<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>\u00a0documented how the Population Council was founded and led by eugenicists, some with ties to Planned Parenthood. A major news outlet even recently <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-population-council-board-member-compulsory-sterilization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exposed<\/a> a former Population Council board member who supported compulsory sterilization. The organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/archive\/news\/2006\/NRL07\/BuffettDonation.html\">brought<\/a>\u00a0the abortion pill to the U.S. and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20010202214900\/http:\/earlyoptionpill.com\/history.php3\">set up<\/a>\u00a0the pill\u2019s manufacturer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-secrecy-women-deserve-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danco Laboratories, LLC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2020, former Population Council employee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:BYuORlbWIrMJ:https:\/\/www.shannonharvey.xyz\/+&amp;cd=2&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us\">Shannon Harvey<\/a>\u00a0tweeted about her experience with &#8220;institutional racism,&#8221; indicating that leaders within the organization still held deep eugenics beliefs.\u00a0&#8220;I no longer work in the US or in repro&#8230; I worked at the Population Council for 3 yrs and that org is endemically racist,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanharves\/status\/1302919426010804225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Harvey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanharves\/status\/1302917067599785984?s=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter thread<\/a>\u00a0claimed a VP once expressed concerns about African immigration into Europe,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanharves\/status\/1302919426010804225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeting<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cAt a donor event a VP made this case for family planning: \u2018There\u2019s widespread concern about 4bn people in Africa: poverty, environment, famines\u2026 With 1bn Africans, immigration is more than [Europe] thinks they can handle.
