A\u00a0letter<\/a> sent to\u00a0Dr. Janet Woodcock, Acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is calling for an end to the “in-person dispensing requirement for mifepristone,” the first drug used in the abortion pill<\/a> regimen. The letter was\u00a0signed<\/a> by Democrat members of the House Oversight Committee (Ayanna Pressley,\u00a0Carolyn B. Maloney,\u00a0Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) who have all been endorsed by Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations.<\/p>\n

This is the latest attempt by the abortion industry to remove an important safety system put in place by the FDA called\u00a0Risk Evaluation and Mitigation System<\/a>\u00a0(REMS), and it comes as\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0have noted the economic strain brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic may be financially impacting<\/a> independent abortion businesses.\u00a0It is likely that expanding access to the abortion pill will increase abortions \u2014 which would be quite profitable<\/a> for the abortion industry. However, expanding access and removing safeguards will not be beneficial for women.<\/p>\n

Safety protocols matter<\/b><\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0FDA<\/a>, REMS is a \u201cdrug safety program that the\u2026 FDA can require for certain medications with serious safety concerns.\u201d The\u00a0FDA has\u00a0approved the abortion pill regimen<\/a>\u00a0for use only up to 10 weeks (70 days) of pregnancy, yet Planned Parenthood has publicly promoted<\/a> its use of the abortion pill regimen up to the 11th week of pregnancy (77 days). This is significant; at 11 weeks of pregnancy, Planned Parenthood itself admits that the abortion pill\u00a0fails 13% of the time<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 nearly\u00a0double<\/em>\u00a0the failure rate for the abortion pill given just two weeks earlier.<\/p>\n

REMS also requires prescribers of the abortion pill to have the ability to accurately assess the gestational age of the baby and rule out life-threatening ectopic pregnancies. As late as 2019<\/a>, the pro-abortion American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) noted in their abortion practice bulletin, “Before medical abortion is performed, gestational age should be confirmed by clinical evaluation or ultrasound examination.”<\/p>\n

To cut costs, the abortion industry wants to eliminate these measures and simply accept the woman’s best guess as to the gestational age of her child. Errors in estimation could be problematic and even dangerous for women and teens who take the abortion pill.<\/p>\n
