Becerra, who has no experience in health care, is known for his hostility towards pro-life activists.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/06\/us\/politics\/xavier-becerra-hhs-health-secretary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the surprise pick, as many expected him to be chosen in another capacity in the Biden administration. California Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated the news on Twitter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1335730236562886658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing<\/a>, &#8220;You\u2019ve spent your entire career fighting for equality and justice. You\u2019ve spent the last four defending the #ACA. Now, you\u2018ll help lead our nation toward quality, affordable healthcare for ALL &#8212; and continue to make CA proud!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prosecuting pro-life activists who exposed Planned Parenthood&#8217;s trafficking of aborted fetal body parts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As California&#8217;s Attorney General, Becerra was preceded by Biden&#8217;s pick for vice president, Kamala Harris. Together, Becerra and Harris persecuted pro-lifers, with David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt as the most notable examples. As lead investigators for the Center for Medical Progress (CMP), Daleiden and Merritt exposed Planned Parenthood&#8217;s participation in the illegal trafficking of aborted baby body parts. Yet Harris not only <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emails-planned-parenthood-partnered-with-ca-attorney-general-criminalize-free-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refused to investigate<\/a>, but specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/m.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2016\/sep\/27\/kamala-harris-planned-parenthood-teamed-up-on-legi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worked with Planned Parenthood<\/a> in crafting a bill which would make recording undercover conversations with \u201chealth care providers\u201d a crime. She also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-investigator-sues-planned-parenthood-conspiracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secretly met<\/a> in person with Planned Parenthood executives just two weeks before Daleiden&#8217;s home was raided. E-mail exchanges between Harris and Planned Parenthood uncovered by the Thomas More Society showed that they had worked together to get a search warrant, allowing them to get CMP\u2019s full, unedited videos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9K82Oyd-lv8\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/daleiden-kamala-harris-becerra-punishing-what-saying\/\">David Daleiden: Kamala Harris and AG Becerra admit \u2018they are punishing me because of WHAT I am saying\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Becerra took office as attorney general, he followed Harris&#8217; lead. Becerra refused to investigate Planned Parenthood, and instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cmp-daleiden-and-merritt-facing-15-felony-charges-in-california-for-planned-parenthood-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed 15 charges<\/a> against Daleiden and Merritt. But after a judge <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/breaking-state-judge-rules-in-favor-of-center-for-medical-progress-investigators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled in favor<\/a> of Daleiden and Merritt, overturning 14 of the charges, Becerra quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-charges-david-daleiden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refiled more charges<\/a> against them, claiming they violated a California law that prohibits recording confidential conversations without consent.<\/p>\n<p>Undercover recordings are frequently used by journalists, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/naf-suing-pro-life-group-something-journalists-done-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including in California<\/a>, and the charges against Daleiden and Merritt were so egregious and concerning that the U.S. Reporters Committee filed a friend of the court brief <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=0000014f-dd02-dd78-adff-fd2b9a390000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposing their prosecution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Persecuting pro-life pregnancy centers which offer abortion alternatives and free services to women<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition, Becerra was the defendant in the case <em>NIFLA v. Becerra<\/em>, in which the state of California <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-pregnancy-resource-centers-victory\/\">attempted to force pro-life pregnancy centers<\/a> to\u00a0promote <a href=\"http:\/\/abortionprocedures.com\/?__hstc=61024563.ce30203696a7f0153e8d266444c51b4f.1586229467241.1607310763874.1607355583813.1441&amp;__hssc=61024563.1.1607355583813&amp;__hsfp=3253471661\">abortion<\/a> through government-mandated messaging in posted signage inside facilities and in any advertising. California&#8217;s Reproductive FACT Act was extreme in its singling out of pregnancy centers, and the Supreme Court voted 5-4 in favor of the pro-life plaintiffs. Kristi Burton Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-pregnancy-centers\/\">wrote for Live Action News in 2018<\/a> that the FACT Act:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8230; is indeed so strenuous and bold-faced that it would, in some cases, require nonprofit pregnancy resource centers to include a 29-word, state-mandated statement on a billboard that would otherwise simply say, \u201cChoose Life.\u201d And not only would the 29 government words be required, but they would also be required in the same font as the nonprofit\u2019s chosen, paid-for message. Additionally, in some California counties, the 29 words would have to appear in 13 different languages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pro-life groups are speaking out against Becerra&#8217;s nomination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFar from \u2018uniting\u2019 the country, Biden has proven yet again he is an extremist on abortion,\u201d Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba-list.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sba-list-slams-bidens-pick-of-becerra-for-hhs-unacceptable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a statement<\/a>. \u201cBecerra is aggressively pro-abortion and a foe of free speech. As attorney general of California, he continued what his predecessor Kamala Harris started by persecuting citizen journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood\u2019s role in baby parts trafficking. Not only that, he went all the way to the Supreme Court to try to force California\u2019s pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise and refer for abortion \u2013 a policy the Court rejected as unconstitutional. In Congress, he even voted in favor of partial-birth abortion. This pick underscores the importance of winning in Georgia to prevent pro-abortion forces from taking control of the U.S. Senate. Republican senators must stand firm and stop this unacceptable nomination from going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Live Action founder and president Lila Rose also issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/becerrahhs\/\">statement<\/a>, saying:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8230; Americans deserve responsible public health policy set by leaders who value human life.\u00a0 Becerra is a pro-abortion activist and friend of the abortion industry, with no medical background. As head of HHS, Becerra can harness the full power of federal public health toward the destruction of our most vulnerable lives. This is chilling. Such power and responsibility must not be entrusted to a man who ignores science and openly violates the civil rights of journalists, churches, and the preborn.
