{"id":235801,"date":"2020-12-07T13:41:11","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T19:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=235801"},"modified":"2020-12-07T11:48:52","modified_gmt":"2020-12-07T17:48:52","slug":"house-appropriations-hearing-hyde-amendment-saved-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/house-appropriations-hearing-hyde-amendment-saved-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"House Appropriations to hold hearing on ending the Hyde Amendment, which saved 2.4M lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>On Tuesday, December 8, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies will hold a virtual hearing \u2014 &#8220;The Impact on Women Seeking an Abortion but are Denied Because of an Inability to Pay&#8221;\u00a0\u2014 to discuss the Hyde Amendment, which forbids federal tax dollars from being used to pay for abortion through the federal Medicaid program.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hyde-amendment-44-years-millions-saved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyde Amendment<\/a> is a rider that has been added to the House appropriations bill every year since it was first passed on September 30, 1976. Every president since then has supported it, and it is credited with saving at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-hyde-amendment-saved-2-4-million-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.4 million<\/a> lives from abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Most Americans support the Hyde Amendment, including the low-income women who would face financial pressure to abort if they are using Medicaid for health insurance. A 2017 Marist poll <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/polls-majority-women-dont-want-taxpayer-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that Americans with lower incomes were <em>less<\/em> <em>likely<\/em> than those with higher incomes to support federal or state funding of abortion through Medicaid.
