The\u00a0&#8220;One Planet, One Child&#8221; ad <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/vancouver-ads-one-child-canadians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>, &#8220;The most loving gift you can give your first child is to not have another.&#8221; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the ads was placed in Vancouver, British Columbia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In response, Sherwood Park-Fort Saskatchewan MP Garnett Genuis initiated an <a href=\"https:\/\/tnc.news\/2020\/10\/11\/cpc-mp-garnett-genuis-takes-aim-at-anti-family-ads-in-vancouver\/#:~:text=CPC%20MP%20Garnett%20Genuis%20takes%20aim%20at%20anti-family,\u2013%20\u201cHow%20can%20there%20be%20too%20many%20children%3F\">ad campaign<\/a> of his own,<\/span>\u00a0featuring a photo of four children and a quote from Mother Teresa: &#8220;How can there be too many children? That is like saying there are too many flowers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">For those who are wondering about context, these ads are in response to population control ads run recently in the same area. Our response was fully crowd-funded. My comments on that here: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0dTNUzeKXJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/0dTNUzeKXJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Garnett Genuis (@GarnettGenuis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GarnettGenuis\/status\/1322918391741440002?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 1, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>After the ad began running, abortion advocates began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citynews1130.com\/2020\/11\/02\/vancouver-transit-anti-choice-message-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attacking<\/a> it. Almost hysterically, Vancouver Centre MP Dr. Hedy Fry claimed the ads attempt to dictate women&#8217;s reproductive rights. &#8220;Who has children?&#8221; she said. &#8220;Who are the ones who give birth to children? Women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fry called for the ads to be removed, claiming they promote the narrative that women are meant to be &#8220;fruitful.&#8221; In addition to claiming she is concerned about women who are unable to have children, Fry said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We don\u2019t go around telling men what to do with their bodies, but we seem to think that this idea that women are creatures that other people can own and determine what happens to their bodies. It\u2019s really something that I think is almost dystopian in the fact that we\u2019re still saying these things, and we\u2019re still not recognizing that women are human beings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>First, women don&#8217;t create babies alone. In addition, Fry&#8217;s claims are a straw man argument in which she has misrepresented the actual position of those who commissioned the ad. A quote from Mother Teresa about the beauty of children is not promoting <em>any<\/em> narrative about women&#8217;s bodies; it is countering the misguided idea that the existence of fewer children is somehow &#8216;more moral&#8217; or &#8216;better for the planet&#8217; than a larger number of children. It says, quite literally, <em>nothing<\/em> about women&#8217;s humanity or bodily autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>Fry failed to express outrage over the &#8220;One Planet, One Child&#8221; ad that <em>actually did attempt to dictate how many children Canadian women should have.\u00a0<\/em>Genuis&#8217;s ads are not directed at women, but at society, which not only fails to recognize\u00a0the value of children, but the humanity of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/50-years-of-abortion-where-does-canada-go-from-here-19538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">300 children<\/a> who are violently killed in abortions every single day in Canada.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Some people posted a racist ad in Vancouver telling everyone to have only 1 or no children. I responded with an ad featuring my children, saying essentially that children are wonderful. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HedyFry?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HedyFry<\/a> complained about the second ad, but not the first. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/partisanpolitics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#partisanpolitics<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cdnpoli?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cdnpoli<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ytysNea0KU\">pic.twitter.com\/ytysNea0KU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Garnett Genuis (@GarnettGenuis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GarnettGenuis\/status\/1323632953096871937?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Genuis responded to critics by stating that the ads were not about abortion, were not paid for by the government, and were in response to the population control motives of the &#8220;One Planet, One Child&#8221; ads, which were pressuring women and couples to have only one child.
