{"id":234466,"date":"2020-11-12T15:30:38","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T21:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=234466"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:30:03","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:30:03","slug":"south-korea-law-abortion-24-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/south-korea-law-abortion-24-weeks\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea attempts to pass law allowing abortion up to 24 weeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/korean-government-announces-intention-to-introduce-abortion-up-to-24-weeks\/\">Right to Life UK<\/a>)\u00a0The Government in South Korea has announced their intention to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moj.go.kr\/moj\/221\/subview.do?enc=Zm5jdDF8QEB8JTJGYmJzJTJGbW9qJTJGMTgyJTJGNTMxODk2JTJGYXJ0Y2xWaWV3LmRvJTNG\">introduce a bill<\/a> that would allow abortion across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Korea\u2019s Ministry of Justice revealed earlier this month that they would bring forth legislation that would allow for abortion up to 24 weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jgw4X7Dw_3k\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Abortion is currenlty permitted in the Republic of Korea under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.go.kr\/LSW\/eng\/engLsSc.do?menuId=2&amp;query=mother%20and%20child%20health%20act#liBgcolor4\">certain circumstances<\/a>, such as significant risk of serious injury or death, or if the pregnancy results from rape or incest.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Government are looking to expand those conditions. The Government\u2019s release <a href=\"http:\/\/viewer.moj.go.kr\/skin\/doc.html?rs=\/result\/bbs\/182&amp;fn=temp_1602030051094100#\">states<\/a> that the introduction of abortion would, at minimum, allow abortion to take place up to 14 weeks in pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/south-korean-abortionist-drowned-baby-survived-abortion\/\">HORROR: South Korean abortionist drowned nearly full-term baby who survived abortion<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, it is believed the proposals could be even more extreme and allow abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/nation\/2020\/10\/251_297111.html\">on demand up to 14 weeks<\/a>, and under certain circumstances, including \u2018extenuating medical or economic circumstances\u2019, up to 24 weeks. In overseas duristictions with similar grounds for abortion through to 24 weeks, this has in practice allowed de-facto abortion on demand.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_188491\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188491\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-188491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/baby-24-weeks.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"407\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-188491\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Preborn child at 24 weeks<\/p><\/div>\n<p>University professor, Song Young-chae, who is against a change in law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/south-korea-abortion-controversy\/a-55253968\">told DW<\/a>: <em>\u201c[legalising abortion] goes against Korean values, our ancestors and society. Koreans\u2026 will always value all life, even if it is unborn.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In April 2019, the Korean Supreme Court <a href=\"http:\/\/search.ccourt.go.kr\/xmlFile\/0\/010400\/2019\/pdf\/e2017b127_2.pdf\">declared<\/a> that the country\u2019s current abortion law is\u00a0 unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ccourt.go.kr\/cckhome\/engNew\/decisions\/casesearch\/caseSearchPop.do\">similar case<\/a> tried before the court in 2012 upheld the Act as constitutional.<\/p>\n<p>After declaring the abortion law unconstitutional, the Supreme court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/south-koreas-top-court-strikes-down-abortion-ban\/a-48282297\">ordered the legislature <\/a>to amend the law by 31 December 2020 or the abortion law will become null and void.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article was published at <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/korean-government-announces-intention-to-introduce-abortion-up-to-24-weeks\/\">Right to Life UK<\/a> and is reprinted here with permission.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Right to Life UK)\u00a0The Government in South Korea has announced their intention to introduce a bill that would allow abortion across the nation.
