{"id":234045,"date":"2020-11-02T21:51:15","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T03:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=234045"},"modified":"2024-09-20T12:18:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T17:18:43","slug":"reuters-biased-misleading-fact-check-live-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reuters-biased-misleading-fact-check-live-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Reuters issues biased and misleading fact check of Live Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 2, Reuters, the news organization owned by the media conglomerate, Thompson Reuters, produced a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-factcheck-most-americans-not-anti-abo-idUSKBN27I2C0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fact check<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d of a Live Action <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveaction\/posts\/10158712563528728\">Facebook and Instagram post<\/a> claiming the \u201cpro-life position is a majority position.\u201d Reuters claimed this and Live Action\u2019s claim that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe pro-life movement is full of young people\u201d are both \u201cfalse.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fliveaction%2Fposts%2F10158712563528728&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=552&amp;height=721&amp;appId\" width=\"552\" height=\"721\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is what they claimed:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reuters cited polls by Reuters Ipsos, Gallup, and Pew Research Center\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters cited a 2019 Reuters Ipsos poll which found 55% of Americans think \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion should be legal in most or all cases,\u201d 73% think \u201cabortion service\u201d providers should be allowed to operate, and 80% think the \u201cSupreme Court should maintain the legal right to abortion.\u201d Reuters also cited a Gallup poll that found 48% of Americans identify as \u201cpro-choice\u201d and 46% identify as \u201cpro-life,\u201d while 6% held \u201cno opinion.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As to Live Action\u2019s claim about young people, Reuters said, \u201c[w]hile it may be true that there are many young adherents to the anti-abortion movement\u201d a Gallup poll found that 53% of respondents between 18 and 34 identified as \u201cpro-choice,\u201d 43% \u201cpro-life,\u201d and 4% \u201cunsure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters also reported that a 2019 Pew Research Center poll showed 61% of respondents thought abortion \u201cshould be legal in all or most cases, while 38% say it should be illegal in all or most cases.\u201d The same poll showed 70% of respondents between 18 and 29 thought \u201cabortion should be legal in either all or most cases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters concluded its \u201cfact check\u201d by saying Live Action\u2019s claims are \u201c[p]artly false,\u201d because the \u201cmajority of Americans do not identify as \u2018pro-life\u2019 or oppose abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fact #1: The pro-life position is a majority position.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/313094\/americans-abortion-views-steady-past-year.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Americans have been \u201cmostly split\u201d on abortion for several decades. Only 33% of Americans identified as \u201cpro-life\u201d in 1996, while 56% identified as \u201cpro-choice.\u201d However, since the early 2000s, Gallup shows the percentages of \u201cpro-life\u201d and \u201cpro-choice\u201d respondents routinely fluctuating between the ranges of 41% and 51%. For instance, in 2019, 49% identified as \u201cpro-life\u201d while 46% identified as \u201cpro-choice.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallup also found that while self-identified \u201cpro-choice\u201d Americans edged out \u201cpro-life\u201d Americans by a slim margin in 2020, 44% believe abortion is \u201cmorally acceptable\u201d while 47% consider abortion \u201cmorally wrong.\u201d <strong>The percentage of Americans who consider abortion \u201cmorally wrong\u201d has consistently exceeded the percentage of Americans who consider abortion \u201cmorally acceptable\u201d for two-decades of Gallup polling.<\/strong> This indicates a certain percentage of people may self-identify as \u201cpro-choice\u201d but also consider abortion \u201cmorally wrong.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallup also found that while only 20% of Americans favor the illegality of abortion in all circumstances, 50% support legality under \u201ccertain circumstances,\u201d with 29% supporting legality in \u201call circumstances.\u201d This means <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/gallup-70-percent-favor-abortion-restrictions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of Americans support some form of legal restriction on abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Moreover, most of the 50% group supported its legality \u201cin only a few circumstances.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This polling suggests 70% of Americans hold a view about abortion laws that leans \u201cpro-life\u201d despite how they self-identify.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What self-identifying as &#8220;pro-life&#8221; and &#8220;pro-choice&#8221; tells us.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters fundamentally misunderstands the abortion debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, it inaccurately describes Live Action\u2019s claim, insisting the \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claim that most Americans oppose abortion access is false.\u201d However, this is not what Live Action claimed in its Facebook post. Rather, Live Action said the \u201cpro-life position is a majority position.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, Reuters reveals its bias by using the loaded term \u201canti-abortion\u201d as opposed to the term pro-lifers use to identify themselves: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/pro-life-anti-abortion-movement-rights-roe-wade\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPro-life\u201d implies a worldview that promotes the inherent moral worth of preborn children, and which advocates for the legal protections of preborn children. The term suggests a <\/span><b><i>value proposition<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that favors life over death; inasmuch as the term \u201cpro-choice\u201d suggests a <\/span><b><i>value proposition<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about a woman\u2019s legal choice to abort her preborn child.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each side of this debate is attempting to persuade Americans of one of these value propositions and to inform their beliefs on abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an educational nonprofit, Live Action\u2019s mission includes exposing the tragic and horrific nature of abortion procedures, the financial corruption, and criminality of the abortion industry, and persuading Americans that the pro-life position is the morally just position held by all people who value life, and who value of human rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, Live Action produced a series of \u201cAbortion Procedures\u201d videos to inform the public about the gruesome nature of the various procedures used to kill preborn children in the womb. These educational videos have been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/live-action-abortion-procedures-impact\/\">viewed over 100 million times<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters insists a majority of Americans support a legal right to abortion, and yet a 2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/56-millennials-no-idea-roe-v-wade-213158121.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poll found that only 44% of Millennials knew the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Supreme Court decision dealt with abortion, while another 16% thought the case was about school desegregation. Among all age groups, the poll found that just 62% of respondents knew\u00a0<em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0dealt with abortion, 20% were not familiar with it, and 17% thought it dealt with a different public policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action also produced a video explaining the history of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which has been viewed more than 100,000 times on YouTube alone.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yIiTGFdT4IM\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The limited or inaccurate information on which many Americans form their beliefs about abortion may explain why the \u201cpro-life\u201d versus \u201cpro-choice\u201d self-identification continues to fluctuate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fact #2: The pro-life movement is full of young people<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The polls Reuters cited proved the claim that the \u201cpro-life movement is full of young people\u201d to be true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, Live Action did not claim that the majority of young people are pro-life but claimed the pro-life movement is \u201cfull\u201d of young people. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/04\/28\/millennials-overtake-baby-boomers-as-americas-largest-generation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are approximately 72.1 million Americans between the ages of 23 and 38, a group often referred to as \u201cMillennials.\u201d If the Gallup poll cited by Reuters is accurate, then 43% of Americans between 18 and 34 are pro-life. Live Action gave no definition for its use of the term \u201cyoung people\u201d but these numbers suggest tens of millions of Millennials self-identify as pro-life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, Live Action specifically claimed \u201cthe pro-life movement\u201d is full of young people. While Live Action did not define the term \u201cpro-life movement\u201d in its Facebook post, this term is typically used to mean individuals who are socially, legally, and politically active in promoting the rights of preborn children. For example, a 2011 Washington Post article reported on the increasingly \u201cyoungish\u201d and \u201cfeminine face\u201d of the pro-life movement, citing the specific examples of young and female leaders of pro-life nonprofits such as Susan B. Anthony List, Americans United for Life, Students for Life, and Concerned Women for America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual March for Life held each January in Washington D.C. typically attracts a crowd of more than 100,000 people, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/the-march-for-life-happens-today-and-thousands-of-young-people-are-there\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of which, according to the Daily Beast, is \u201chigh school and college kids.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters appears to misunderstand what is commonly meant by the term \u201cpro-life movement\u201d which its own references indicate is indeed \u201cfull of young people.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/gallup-americans-majority-abortion-illegal-all-most\/\">Gallup: Majority of Americans say abortion should be illegal in all or most circumstances<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Thompson Reuters donates to the pro-abortion Clinton Foundation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/media\/2015\/05\/clinton-foundation-donors-include-dozens-of-media-organizations-individuals-207228\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thompson Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is among several major international news organizations that have given large donations to the Clinton Foundation. A 2012 disclosure shows Thompson Reuters gave between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/projects\/clinton-donors\/page\/5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$500,001 and $1,000,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the foundation. The Clinton Foundation also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clintonfoundation.org\/clinton-global-initiative\/commitments\/creating-healthiest-generation-ever\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partners with Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to promote contraceptive use among <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2015\/07\/hillary-clinton-planned-parenthood-ties-120794\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young people in Latin America and Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and to \u201ccombat\u2026 cultural taboos around age and sexuality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 2016 election, Reuters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-clinton-idUSKBN12E2IF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the potential ethical breaches committed by the foundation which accepted gifts from foreign governments while Hillary Clinton served as secretary of state. Clinton and the foundation\u2019s ties to Planned Parenthood also raised ethical concerns during Clinton\u2019s tenure at the State Department. Between 2010 and 2012 alone, Planned Parenthood received more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/planned-parenthood-received-millions-of-dollars-after-lobbying-clintons-state-department\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$100 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Clinton was the 2009 recipient of Planned Parenthood\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/weekly-standard\/sec-clinton-stands-by-her-praise-of-eugenicist-margaret-sanger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margaret Sanger Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and received 20 times more in personal donations from Planned Parenthood executives than any other 2016 presidential candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her acceptance speech, Clinton said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMargaret Sanger&#8217;s work here in the United States and certainly across our globe is not done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Reuters did not disclose its support for pro-abortion organizations like the Clinton Foundation, and its biased fact-check misrepresents the pro-life position, the pro-life movement, and gives a distorted interpretation of the polling trends concerning how Americans truly feel about abortion restrictions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and
