{"id":233485,"date":"2020-10-31T13:06:07","date_gmt":"2020-10-31T18:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=233485"},"modified":"2020-11-06T18:41:02","modified_gmt":"2020-11-07T00:41:02","slug":"naral-virtual-rally-flaws-womens-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/naral-virtual-rally-flaws-womens-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"NARAL virtual rally peddles lie that women are empowered by abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 22, NARAL <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilize.us\/joebiden\/event\/354567\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hosted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a virtual rally to \u201cmobilize\u201d women and encourage them to use their voices to support \u201creproductive rights.\u201d The event featured Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, as well as Planned Parenthood president Alex McGill Johnson; Stephanie Schriock of EMILY\u2019s List; NARAL president Ilyse Hogue; pro-abortion advocates Destiny Lopez and Aimee Allison, and former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards. Political strategist Symone Sanders served as an emcee during the webinar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event\u2019s purpose was to empower women to stand together for freedom and equality. On the surface, this sounds like a positive message. However, NARAL\u2019s virtual rally is demonstrative of how abortion has been weaponized as a political tool \u2013 one that undermines women and pits them against their unborn children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xpfM5HHbt6M\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Point of agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sanders began the event by recognizing the women who have found themselves facing unprecedented challenges because of the COVID-19 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(4:12 \u2013 4:36)<\/span>. Both sides of the abortion debate can concur that women deserve to be lifted up in a time of crisis. As many pregnant women find themselves deprived of a job or their usual supportive networks, pro-life <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2020\/08\/09\/covid-19-creates-desperation-women-turn-pregnancy-centers-column\/3316935001\/\">pregnancy centers<\/a> throughout the country have been stepping in to provide free resources.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the rest of the evening is unlikely to inspire the same level of agreement, as NARAL\u2019s abortion advocacy prevents them from being champions of an authentic feminist movement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Organizations like NARAL rally people to their cause by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prochoiceamerica.org\/issue\/abortion-access\/\">claiming<\/a> to stand for \u201cwomen\u2019s equality.\u201d But NARAL\u2019s concept of feminine freedom adheres to sexual revolution principles by <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-naral-50-years-neglects-male-founders\/\">pushing<\/a> the abortion agenda of its male founders.\u00a0Despite the focus of the webinar being on the power of women\u2019s voices, the event neglected to mention that polls <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/polls-roe-women-disapproved-abortion\/\">conducted<\/a> before <i>Roe<\/i> <i>v. Wade <\/i>showed a majority of women disapproved of abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Combating &#8220;disinformation&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hogue shared that NARAL is combating \u201cdisinformation\u201d about abortion within the public sphere\u00a0(7:26 \u2013 7:44). She said this work is necessary to \u201ccall out the lies and get the truth out there about why abortion is central to freedom, justice, and to our ability to have dignity in this society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, NARAL has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-naral-media-mislead-favor-abortion\/\">actively<\/a> engaged in disinformation by advising the media to avoid publishing scientific facts about fetal development, the reason for late-term abortions, and the real number of Americans who support <i>Roe<\/i>. This is nothing new for NARAL, as their founder, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, admitted years ago the organization\u2019s entire fight to legalize abortion relied on <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/thousands-women-werent-dying-abortion\/\">fabricated statistics<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All of these deceptions are intended to support Hogue\u2019s message \u2013 women must have an abortion to succeed \u2013 which is hardly empowering, and it carries the sexist implication that a pregnancy is the sole responsibility of the woman. As ethicist Daniel Callahan <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/stunning-admission-abortion-men-manipulate-abandon-women\/\">explained<\/a>: \u201cIf legal abortion has given women more choice, it has also given men more choices as well. They now have a potent new weapon in the old business of manipulating and abandoning women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the societal issues abortion was supposed to solve for women \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/an-analysis-of-out-of-wedlock-births-in-the-united-states\/\">unintended pregnancies<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalmarriageproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012-SOOU-UVA-Press-Release.pdf\">single motherhood<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/students\/orgs\/jlpp\/Vol29_No2_Dodds.pdf\">child abuse<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/hhes\/families\/data\/cps2015UC.html\">divorce<\/a> &#8211; were exacerbated after abortion was legalized. Furthermore, NARAL\u2019s virtual rally was intended to highlight women\u2019s strengths and prove they\u2019re uniquely capable to vote, serve in government, or hold positions of power. Isn\u2019t it rather insulting for Hogue to imply women cannot achieve these successes without abortion? In fact, Hogue\u2019s position is easily disputed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/GPO-CHRG-GINSBURG\/pdf\/GPO-CHRG-GINSBURG-4-8-2-1.pdf\">research<\/a> into laws against sex discrimination, proving the progress women have made throughout the years has not been derived from abortion access.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hyde Amendment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lopez and a live audience member, Brittany Mostiller, criticized the Hyde Amendment for preventing low-income women from accessing abortion (24:38 \u2013 24:57, 37:30 \u2013 39:22). Mostiller shared her personal story of discovering she was pregnant and deciding to have an abortion, but not being able to afford one because the Hyde Amendment <a href=\"https:\/\/s27589.pcdn.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Hyde-@-40-Executive-Summary-updated-1.pdf\">prevents<\/a> taxpayer dollars from funding abortions. She described it as an \u201cemotional\u201d experience, as by the time Mostiller had raised the necessary funds, she was in her second trimester.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has saved over 2 million lives, and it\u2019s supported by a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quinnipiac.edu\/news-and-events\/quinnipiac-university-poll\/national\/release-detail?ReleaseID=1413\">majority<\/a> of Americans. Pro-choice activists <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-democrats-plan-overturn-hyde\/\">claim<\/a> they want to repeal the Hyde Amendment in the name of women, but shouldn\u2019t we offer women like Mostiller something better than abortion? The push to abolish the amendment <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/child-low-income-support-hyde\/\">carries<\/a> this message: Low-income women\u2019s children are less valuable, and their children are better off dead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0Abortion as an &#8220;essential\u00a0right&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is as much as anything, an essential right if not a fundamental right to have the decision and the decision-making ability over [our] own bodies,\u201d Harris said about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (34:58 \u2013 36:21)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did far more than legalize abortion. It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25936207\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shielded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dangerous abortionists by prohibiting public health officials from subjecting them to health and safety standards, enabling men like Sidney Knight to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/from-back-alley-to-main-street-illegal-abortionists-who-became-legal-abortionists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> legal abortions with the ethics of back alley procedures. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/legal-foundation-abortion-roe-nonsense\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1973 ruling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took the abortion issue away from the states and led to the destruction of more than 60 million preborn children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harris also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/just-defund-planned-parenthood-already-heres\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> restoring federal funding to Planned Parenthood, an organization with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/health-abortion-profits-planned-parenthood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> health services that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/2e\/da\/2eda3f50-82aa-4ddb-acce-c2854c4ea80b\/2018-2019_annual_report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over 345,000 abortions last year. Harris went on to claim Planned Parenthood is \u201ctrusted by women in the community.\u201d Not only has Planned Parenthood been caught <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/12-abuser-planned-parenthood-no-help\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aiding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women\u2019s abusers, but as Harris knows, the abortion provider was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/TheCenterforMedicalProgress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filmed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on undercover video illegally trafficking aborted baby body parts. Just last year, several Planned Parenthood officials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerformedicalprogress.org\/2020\/06\/sworn-video-testimony-describes-infanticide-in-fetal-organ-harvesting-and-planned-parenthood-clinics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under oath the content of the videos was true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo one gets to give us our power. We are born with it. The thing is to never let anybody take your power. The thing is to know that power you were born with,\u201d Harris added (41:08 \u2013 41:21).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If only NARAL would consistently abide by this philosophy.
