Poland, which already had strong pro-life laws, will allow abortion only in cases of rape and incest and when the mother&#8217;s life is at risk (which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5TmomK2RB2A&amp;t=19s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never actually medically necessary<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/22\/europe\/poland-abortion-fetal-defect-ruling-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a>, about 98% of abortions in Poland are committed because of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d6GewCpuC30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fetal diagnosis<\/a>. In 2019, the Health Ministry reported 1,110 abortions in the nation. This most recent ruling, the first change to the abortion law since 1993, will ban those discriminatory abortions, significantly cutting back on the number of abortions in Poland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FWWW1lMrLAE\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Poland&#8217;s governing Law and Justice party placed pro-life measures at the top of its agenda and attempted to pass a bill banning abortions because of a fetal diagnosis just as the COVID-19 pandemic began.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am a strong opponent of eugenic abortion and I believe that killing children with disabilities is frankly murder,&#8221; Polish <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/president-poland-participates-march-life-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Andrzej Duda<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/15\/world\/poland-abortion-law-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at the time. &#8220;If the plan finds itself on my desk, I will in all certainty sign it.&#8221; The bill, however, did not make it through parliament. That&#8217;s when the court took it up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/president-poland-participates-march-life-first-time\/\">President of Poland participates in country\u2019s March for Life for the first time ever<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/international-news-poland-abortion-europe-birth-defects-9258358858a72911663cd1d276a8fbd2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a> reported that in court, those in favor of the law argued that aborting a baby because of a diagnosis is an act of eugenics like those used by the Nazis in their pseudo-scientific experiments. Discriminatory abortions violate the Polish constitutional provision that calls for the protection of every individual&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Marek Jedraszewski praised the ruling, saying the judges showed &#8220;courage&#8221; in their defense of human life &#8220;from the moment of conception to the [moment of] natural death.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Within hours of the ruling&#8217;s announcement, however, abortion advocates took the street despite the ban on gatherings due to the pandemic.
