He threatened to leave her if she gave birth.\u00a0In the book &#8220;Life Stories,&#8221; St. Amour shared her story of forced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion<\/a> and regret.<\/p>\n<p>St. Amour described herself at the time as a \u201cpro-choice feminist,\u201d but she didn\u2019t want to raise her baby without a father. She said, &#8220;He stated he did not want me to have the baby, and that if I did, he\u2019d leave me. I was crushed. I was a very open-minded, pro-choice feminist\u2026 But this was <em>his<\/em> child, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>St. Amour told a feminist friend about the pregnancy and that didn\u2019t want an abortion, but the friend <em>encouraged<\/em> her to abort. St. Amour explained, \u201c[S]he said, &#8216;Well, you can always have more children, but there\u2019s only one Jim. So, if you love him\u2026'&#8221; The lack of support from her friend was part of the reason St. Amour went to her doctor to discuss abortion. That doctor sent her to an abortion facility. She explained:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>[W]anting very much to please [Jim], plus being fearful of his leaving me, I made an appointment to &#8220;discuss&#8221; this with my doctor\u2026 The doctor made arrangements to have the pregnancy terminated the following week. The place was &#8216;<\/em><em>Women\u2019s Medical Services&#8217;<\/em><em>; I found out later that the doctor operated the place outside his OB\/GYN practice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The doctor, then, had a financial stake in her having an abortion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jim went with St. Amour to the abortion facility. St. Amour noted that she was the only woman having an abortion that day who was accompanied by a man. None of the fathers of the other women\u2019s babies came with them to the abortion facility.<\/p>\n<p>She recalled that she did not receive any counseling at the abortion facility:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I remember the assistant\u2019s very cold, businesslike manner, not too talkative\u2026 there was no compassion or counseling, just an attitude of &#8220;let\u2019s get it over with, there are many patients to deal with.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The abortion itself was traumatic for St. Amour. &#8220;I was instructed to get up on the table, put my legs in the stirrups and relax\u2026 The doctor began inserting this and that, and then the machine started,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The noise was unforgettable\u2026 I felt this gripping pain \u2013 it hurt so bad that I cried out. The doctor told me to &#8216;shut up&#8217; because there were &#8216;other girls&#8217; and the &#8216;walls were thin.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>St. Amour went on to marry Jim, who coerced her into a second abortion. She fell into drug abuse and heavy drinking, as is common for women who undergo abortions. Her marriage to Jim was filled with conflict and arguments and eventually, they divorced. Childless, she now regrets her abortions. She wonders where the feminists were who should have helped her to be strong and not give in to a man&#8217;s demands. She explained:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Where was the feminists\u2019 protection of my rights at the doctor\u2019s office and the abortion clinic? No feminist was encouraging my male chauvinistic boyfriend to take a walk. None of my feminist friends offered to really help me. No, they rallied to his side.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Forced abortion is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2017\/08\/forced-abortion-coerced-women-pregnancy-economic-pressure-pro-life-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">common occurrence<\/a>, though the abortion industry tends to turn a blind eye to it. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpands.org\/vol22no4\/coleman.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons found that nearly three-quarters (73.8%) of women who have undergone abortions and sought post-abortion care reported experiencing some level of pressure to do so.\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/20-of-abortions-are-unwanted-and-especially-harmful-to-mental-health-new-national-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 study<\/a>\u00a0on abortion and mental health <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-women-abort-depression-pregnancies-unwanted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compared<\/a> women who aborted &#8220;wanted&#8221; babies to those who aborted &#8220;unwanted&#8221; babies.
