This is a familiar tactic; in recent months, social media users were also faced with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/democratic-presidents-not-cause-declines-abortion-rate\/\">claims that abortion declines more under Democratic presidential administrations than Republican<\/a>. However, for both of these claims, the truth is exposed when reliable data is reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>Donnica Moore, MD, took to Twitter on Monday with the claim that pro-lifers would be to blame if the ACA were undone, resulting in her predicted increase in abortions. &#8220;To all anti-RoevWade #SCOTUS justices, Senators &amp; #AmyConeyBarrett: Good News, if you are really #AntiChoice. US #abortion rate fell considerably each year since #ACA was implemented. BUT: IF you overturn #Obamacare, you will PERSONALLY be responsible for INCREASING abortions!&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In a second tweet, she claimed that her prediction is accurate because the &#8220;#ACA guarantees coverage of #contraception, including #IUD, with no copay or deductible. The more people who have reliable #birthcontrol, the fewer #abortions there will be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s wrong on both counts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">2. Overall, the U.S. abortion rate has dropped by more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/news-release\/2019\/us-abortion-rate-continues-decline-reaching-historic-low-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50%<\/a> since 1980. The chart below from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute shows a consistent decline since that peak. New examined abortion rate data from the Guttmacher Institute which reports on abortion rate data from all 50 states, unlike the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Therefore, Guttmacher&#8217;s information is considered more complete than that of the CDC. The abortion rate, according to Guttmacher, has been declining since the year before President Ronald Regan took office in 1981.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-231502 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screen-Shot-2020-09-23-at-11.25.51-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"673\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screen-Shot-2020-09-23-at-11.25.51-PM.png 673w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screen-Shot-2020-09-23-at-11.25.51-PM-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screen-Shot-2020-09-23-at-11.25.51-PM-500x217.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/democratic-presidents-not-cause-declines-abortion-rate\/\">No, Democratic presidents do not cause large declines in the abortion rate<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to New, since the 1992 Supreme Court decision of <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em>, states have had more control over their abortion laws. Republicans also made gains in many state legislatures during the Clinton and Obama administrations and many of these states have been actively passing pro-life laws. Pro-life laws <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-spin-study-effectiveness-pro-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">help to reduce<\/a> the abortion rate. In addition, the number of pro-life organizations offering assistance to pregnant women increased by 86% between 1988 and 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An important reason why the U.S. abortion rate has declined [&#8230;] is because of the tireless work of pro-lifers,&#8221; wrote New. &#8220;Our educational, service, and legislative efforts are paying dividends.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Access to contraception does not reduce abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moore, like many abortion advocates, believes access to contraception reduces the abortion rate. In reality, while the abortion rate has consistently declined, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/democratic-presidents-not-cause-declines-abortion-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> New, the rate of unintended pregnancy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/unintended-pregnancy-united-states#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fluctuated<\/a> since the 1980s. From 2001 to 2008 unintended pregnancies in the U.S. rose from 48% to 51%. By 2011, the rate had dropped to 45%. While the rate of unintended pregnancies overall is lower today than in the 1980s, the rate among low-income women rose between 1981 and 2008 before dropping.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, while 54% of unplanned pregnancies were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMsa1506575#:~:text=Rates%20are%20reported%20as%20the%20number%20of%20unintended,compared%20with%2051%25%20of%20the%20pregnancies%20in%202008.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aborted<\/a> in 1980, by 2011, that number had fallen to 42%.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/half-women-abortion-birth-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two separate studies<\/a> have shown that more than half of the women seeking abortion report using birth control during the same month that they became pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>The Guttmacher-published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2018\/01\/reported-contraceptive-use-month-becoming-pregnant-among-us-abortion-patients-2000?utm_source=Master+List&amp;utm_campaign=af4cea4203-RJONESabortcont_CAMPAIGN_2017_12_28&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_9ac83dc920-af4cea4203-260667465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> found that in 2014, 51% of the women who sought an abortion were using birth control, while 24% reported using condoms, 13% reported using the pill, and 1% reported use of long-term birth control such as an IUD.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpas.org\/about-our-charity\/press-office\/press-releases\/women-cannot-control-fertility-through-contraception-alone-bpas-data-shows-1-in-4-women-having-an-abortion-were-using-most-effective-contraception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published by the pro-abortion British Pregnancy Advisory Service found that 51.2% of women who sought an abortion in 2016 were using at least one form of contraception when they became pregnant, and 24.2% of those women used a hormonal method \u2014 birth control pill, patch, ring, injectable, or implanted birth control.<\/p>\n<p>The abortion rate began declining long before the Affordable Care Act was created and will likely continue to decline even if the Affordable Care Act should be replaced, as long as pro-life politicians are elected, states continue to enact pro-life laws, and pro-lifers are still able to assist women facing unplanned pregnancies through the pregnancy help centers that abortion advocates <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/naral-webinar-health-disinformation-inaccuracies-pro-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">so desperately<\/a> want to shut down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a> for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, abortion advocates made the misleading and erroneous claim that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has caused a decline in the nation&#8217;s abortion rate.
