Hunter is the CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2020\/10\/alabama-teen-with-down-syndrome-is-ceo-of-an-ice-cream-truck.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Little Something Extra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ice cream truck business based in Dawson, Alabama. The idea for the company was developed by Hunter\u2019s mother, Michelle, who teaches special education. Michelle was worried that living in a rural community meant Hunter \u201cwould never experience things that bring gratification, such as a paycheck and a job title.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was while she and her students were running a snack bar at their school that Michelle thought to herself, \u201cI need something like this for my son.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in 2017, Michelle patronized an ice cream truck for the first time when she visited her sister in Memphis. This sudden burst of inspiration motivated Michelle to spend months researching and jotting down ideas that came to her at two in the morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v8.0\" nonce=\"cVHogsg0\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/extraicecream\/photos\/1508918469294480\" data-width=\"750\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/extraicecream\/photos\/a.955206087999057\/1508918469294480\/?type=3\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\">\n<p>The only thing better than selling ice cream, is selling ice cream with friends! ????<\/p>\n<p>Posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/extraicecream\/\">A Little Something Extra Ice Cream<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/extraicecream\/photos\/a.955206087999057\/1508918469294480\/?type=3\">Tuesday, July 28, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverything came together,\u201d Michelle said, \u201cfrom the freezer to the ice cream distributor to the truck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Little Something Extra launched in August of 2018, with the business being named for the extra chromosome that causes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/birthdefects\/downsyndrome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Down syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The truck sells pre-packaged frozen items at nursing homes, schools, golf tournaments, birthday parties, and other special events. Each of the employees serving the frozen treats are identified as \u201cice cream experts\u201d on their nametags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe whole goal is to give them an opportunity to socialize, be seen and valued,\u201d Michelle said. \u201cI want the ice cream truck to be a tool for advocacy and awareness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outreach efforts of the business have been incredibly successful. Over the past two years, two dozen young people have been trained to work on the ice cream truck.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had high expectations, but each worker has come in and blown me away with their ability,\u201d Michelle said. \u201cIt really has been amazing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle believes \u201cthere\u2019s something about ice cream when it\u2019s served by our ice cream experts. You might get a brain freeze, but your heart melts.
