According to a recent internal audit\u00a0reviewed<\/a> by Buzzfeed News, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), which oversees over 50 affiliates in the U.S., has a racism problem. The assessment was “conducted…with 64 current and 12 former Black Planned Parenthood employees,” many of whom remained anonymous out of fear of retribution, and was presented by\u00a0Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance (AORTA) to Planned Parenthood’s ‘Network of Black Associates.’\u00a0The assessment pertained only to employees of PPFA, and revealed systemic racism within the eugenics-founded, abortion-focused organization.<\/p>\n

Black employees at PPFA “have been held to a different standard than the organization\u2019s white employees and that they are often expected to work more and given less leeway,” Buzzfeed News said AORTA’s assessment concluded. The news outlet added that PPFA’s treatment of Black employees “does not line up with its social justice\u2013driven mission.”<\/p>\n

PPFA’s head of HR,\u00a0Dannette Hill, put the onus on PPFA leadership, telling Buzzfeed News, \u201cIt’s not possible for you to know or understand the thousands of conversations we have in a year with leaders about their sh*t, about their behavior, about people on their staff and their behavior,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cThere is a protection in this organization that must be permeated by us as a collective body about how far even HR can go in invoking consequences on someone for the way that they behave….”<\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood staff told AORTA that the taxpayer-funded organization often used “political threats” to create a \u201cfalse sense of urgency,” allowing leadership’s \u201cbullying\u201d behavior to “thrive.” Among those political threats was the possibility that Planned Parenthood might lose the half a billion dollars it receives from American taxpayers each year.<\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood was founded by Margaret Sanger<\/a>, a one-time Ku Klux Klan speaker and white supremacist-allied advocate of requiring “licenses to breed.” Sanger\u00a0added eugenicists like Lothrop Stoddard \u2014\u00a0a journalist and Exalted Cyclops of the Massachusetts\u00a0chapter of the Ku Klux Klan<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0to her American Birth Control League board.<\/p>\n

In June 2020<\/a>, hundreds of past and current Planned Parenthood employees published an open\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0claiming the corporation is steeped in racism and \u201cwhite supremacy.\u201d Multiple additional<\/a> staffers have made similar claims over the years. Recently, Buzzfeed documented<\/a> additional accusations of racism from \u201c26 employees at Planned Parenthood affiliates and the national office of NARAL<\/a>, as well as 16 employees of other<\/a> reproductive rights organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n

After that expose, Planned Parenthood president, Alexis McGill Johnson\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0in part that, “I hear you, I see you, I feel you, and I\u2019ve been there too…\u00a0We know white supremacy limits sexual and reproductive health. We must fight to eradicate it <\/span>@PPFA<\/a><\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Supporters immediately called out McGill Johnson, with one\u00a0asking<\/a>, “But what will you actually do about it? The actions described in the <\/span>@BuzzFeed\u00a0<\/span>article aren’t just mean or unfortunate events, they are illegal. For once, heads need to roll.”<\/p>\n

Another tweeted<\/a> that the apology wasn’t showing up on PPFA’s main Twitter pages: “Also…it\u2019s insulting that the main <\/span>@PPact\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0\u00a0@PPFA\u00a0<\/span>accounts aren\u2019t lifting up this \u201capology\u201d. Hundreds of thousands of people won\u2019t even see this.”<\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood\u2019s \u201csystemic racism<\/a>\u201d was acknowledged by several affiliates<\/a>, including Planned Parenthood Greater Washington and North Idaho which tweeted<\/a>, \u201cWhite supremacy and systemic racism permeate every American institution \u2013 including Planned Parenthood.” Planned Parenthood Action New Hampshire wrote,\u00a0\u201cWe know that systemic racism isn\u2019t limited to police departments\u2026 It\u2019s in our institutions, including Planned Parenthood.\u201d Five additional affiliates<\/a> made similar admissions.<\/p>\n

AORTA staff member Autumn Brown acknowledged to Buzzfeed News<\/a> that despite the organization’s hype about reproductive justice, Planned Parenthood’s mothership organization employed few Black people \u2014 which Buzzfeed claimed comprise about 18% of PPFA’s 556 employees.\u00a0Staffers who spoke to Buzzfeed News claimed that many people of color actually hired by Planned Parenthood later left because of how they were treated.<\/p>\n

According to Buzzfeed News, Planned Parenthood’s Black employees felt “over-scrutinized” and \u201cplaced under greater scrutiny than white colleagues\u201d and were “expected to put in extraordinary hours of work\u201d while “white employees were given more leeway.” They also claimed Planned Parenthood had\u00a0“uneven promotion and hiring practices,” and that Black employees felt their work roles were assigned due to \u201cracialized assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI imagine that little of it will be surprising to you that the collective experience of Black staff at Planned Parenthood is as heavy as it is,\u201d AORTA’s Brown stated, adding that there is a\u00a0\u201creal sense that Planned Parenthood’s externally stated racial equity values don’t align with its internal commitment to supporting Black employees because the feedback from \u2026 Black staff has not been meaningfully addressed for years and years.”<\/p>\n

AORTA also noted something termed the \u201cchildification\u201d of Black and brown employees. This, AORTA’s Brown explained, is “similar to the concept of microaggressions” and means the \u201cpersistent treatment of Black people as children or adolescents who are unable to accomplish work independently, and viewed uniformly, such that they cannot be differentiated from one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Brown explained, and included white employees confusing their Black colleagues\u2019 names, or having their appearance commented on and their hair touched without consent,” Buzzfeed wrote, treating the colleagues as an “object to be viewed and commented on, as though they are not there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buzzfeed’s expos\u00e9 was published mere hours after Yelp announced<\/a> its consumer alert to stand against racism. “In the last few months, we\u2019ve seen that there is a clear need to warn consumers about businesses associated with egregious, racially-charged actions to help people make more informed spending decisions,” Yelp tweeted<\/a>. Twitchy then documented<\/a> multiple calls for Yelp to flag Planned Parenthood. However, as of the publishing of this article, that has not occurred.<\/p>\n

AORTA, hired by Planned Parenthood to conduct the assessment, claimed that PPFA is \u201cis turning and facing the problem of white supremacy, which is as old as this country,\u201d and is \u201cserious about combating systemic racism and anti-Black racism.” Yet staffers within Planned Parenthood were not so optimistic. Many told Buzzfeed that while they are glad the assessment took place, “they don\u2019t trust it at large to actually make significant change unless it is held publicly accountable.”<\/p>\n

\u201cThis assessment was great but, what\u2019s next? This assessment took three years to do. Are we gonna have to wait another three years before they implement any policies?\u201d a Planned Parenthood employee asked Buzzfeed. \u201cI don\u2019t trust them to make these changes, because Planned Parenthood is filled with people who, because they do work in reproductive rights, think they can\u2019t be racist or prejudice, but keep saying and doing racist things, and nothing is being done about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet even in the era of Black Lives Matter and an awakening on systemic racism, after over 100 years of racism and white supremacy in Planned Parenthood, politicians seem determined to protect Planned Parenthood once again from being defunded.\u00a0No organization steeped in racism and white supremacy should receive a single dime of taxpayer money. Planned Parenthood should not get a pass.<\/p>\n
