Individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/birthdefects\/downsyndrome.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Down syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may experience physical and mental challenges as a result of an extra or partial chromosome 21. Regardless of these difficulties, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3740159\/#:~:text=Among%20those%20surveyed%2C%20nearly%2099,liked%20their%20brothers%20and%20sisters.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surveys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people with the condition have found that 99% of them are happy with their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese treasured members of our society are sources of inspiration to the many families and communities graced by their lives. Those living with Down syndrome face unique challenges, reminding us every day that it is incumbent upon us as a nation, to continue empowering them to reach their full potential,\u201d the president stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the statement noted, \u201caround 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome every year.\u201d The presidential message denounced abortions taken against children who have been diagnosed with the condition, emphasizing how the Trump administration is committed to \u201cstanding against those who seek to discriminate, devalue, and demean the sanctity of their lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, great strides have been made in developmental research and therapies to improve the lives of Americans with Down syndrome. In 2019, The National Institutes of Health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/new-nih-grant-awards-boost-funding-research-down-syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $35 million toward new grants that would advance Down syndrome research. Then, in September 2020, an additional $60 million in funding was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumindidsc.org\/s\/1914\/20\/interior-share.aspx?sid=1914&amp;gid=2&amp;pgid=480&amp;cid=1186&amp;ecid=1186&amp;crid=0&amp;calpgid=471&amp;calcid=1187\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to provide new treatment and diagnostic options for Americans with Down syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/book-parents-down-syndrome-unexpected-joys\/\">\u2018Nobody Told Me\u2019: Book tells parents of children with Down syndrome of unexpected joys<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Down syndrome community is still threatened by abortion, despite these efforts to improve the lives of individuals with the condition and create a more inclusive society for children who have it. A CBS News report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2017\/08\/15\/iceland-claims-to-have-eradicated-down-syndrome-by-aborting-every-baby-who-had-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that between 1995 and 2011, 67% of preborn babies were aborted after being diagnosed with Down syndrome in utero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps even more shocking is research from the Charlotte Lozier Institute which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/new-study-abortion-after-prenatal-diagnosis-of-down-syndrome-reduces-down-syndrome-community-by-thirty-percent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that the population of people living with the condition has been reduced by 30% due to abortions taking place after a prenatal diagnosis. The possibility that a child may live with a disability should not determine his or her value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs our society progresses toward a more inclusive future, there are still those who pass judgment on which lives are worth living,\u201d Trump said of this disturbing trend. \u201cAs President, I denounce radical proposals to terminate pregnancies of unborn children with Down syndrome. Our Nation will continue to emphatically affirm the self-evident ideal that all children\u2014born and unborn\u2014are created in the image of God, are worthy of life, and deserve to be loved.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The president concluded his messages by saying, \u201cOur country must never run astray from the certitude that the lives of those with Down syndrome are precious and full of potential.
