Following a recently\u00a0revised court decision by U.S. District Judge\u00a0Theodore D. Chuang allowing the abortion pill to be distributed without an in-person visit during the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. based online pharmacy Honeybee Health<\/a>\u00a0agreed to distribute the drug directly to women by mail for abortion providers who prescribe it.<\/p>\n

Chuang’s order, which allows women to obtain\u00a0the abortion pill<\/a>\u00a0(mifepristone) online and in pharmacies\u00a0without being seen in person by a health professional,\u00a0disregards<\/a>\u00a0U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safeguards put in place under a system known as REMS. The\u00a0American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists<\/a>\u00a0filed a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against the FDA, claiming that requiring mifepristone to be dispensed in person during the pandemic constitutes an “undue burden” on women seeking abortion.<\/p>\n

Under the FDA\u2019s REMS safety requirements, the abortion pill regimen \u2014 which includes two drugs (mifepristone and misoprostol)\u00a0\u2014\u00a0must be dispensed by a certified prescriber at an approved hospital or clinic and cannot be sold online or in a pharmacy. However,\u00a0Chuang\u2019s modification to the\u00a0preliminary injunction<\/a>\u00a0as of August 19, 2020, now allows pharmacies to act as \u201can agent\u201d of the certified abortion pill prescribers and to store abortion pills \u201con behalf of the healthcare provider.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the order allows a pharmacy to stock and subsequently mail abortion pills for a certified prescriber, it limits the business from \u201cacting as a retail pharmacy\u201d and stocking the abortion pills generally or distributing the abortion pill outside of certified prescribers.<\/p>\n

Founded<\/a> in 2017<\/a>, a Honeybee Health\u00a0press release<\/a> announcing the decision describes the business as an “accredited online pharmacy that sells generic medications without the need for insurance… which carries over 6,000 medications for common medical conditions and treatments.” The online pharmacy claims to be the “first pharmacy in the U.S. to ship abortion pills to patients across the country during COVID-19.” Honeybee Health\u00a0is\u00a0headquartered<\/a> in Culver City, California.<\/p>\n

A statement from co-founder and pharmacist Dr. Jessica Nouhavandi<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which reads like a litany of pro-abortion talking points \u2014 referred to the abortion pill as “extremely safe, effective, and widely used in other countries without the kind of political scrutiny we see in America.” Nouhavandi described Honeybee’s decision to distribute the drugs, which have already taken the lives of approximately four million preborn children<\/a> in the U.S. alone over two decades, as “a momentous achievement for Americans, particularly for women of color and others who historically faced barriers to reproductive healthcare that are made even worse by COVID-19.”\u00a0Nouhavandi added that Honeybee Health is “<\/strong>deeply honored to be part of the pioneering group of medical professionals who are bringing increased access to safe abortion pills across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview<\/a> with Medium, Nouhavandi pointed to Melinda Gates as the person she most admires. Gates and her Microsoft-founder husband Bill fund<\/a>\u00a0many abortion organizations\u00a0through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Among these are\u00a0the Population Council, a eugenics organization<\/a> which aided in the establishment of abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories. The Gates Foundation<\/a> also funds Gynuity Health Foundation<\/a> \u2014\u00a0which is conducting\u00a0an expanding\u00a0TelAbortion<\/a>\u00a0abortion pill clinical trial in the U.S. which\u00a0recruits<\/a>\u00a0children as young as 10\u00a0\u2014<\/em>\u00a0as well as DKT International<\/a>, which ships abortion pills globally and operates<\/a> the FemHealth U.S. affiliate (Carafem), a study site for Gynuity’s clinical trial.<\/p>\n

According to information posted on\u00a0Reddit<\/a>, the overseas online abortion pill group Aid Access<\/a>\u00a0may also be utilizing\u00a0Honeybee Health’s services. Aid Access was\u00a0recently cited by the FDA for illegally shipping abortion pills into the U.S.\u00a0The unregulated group responded by expressing its\u00a0intent<\/a>\u00a0to defy the FDA\u2019s\u00a0warnings<\/a>.\u00a0In May 2019,\u00a0100 lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0sent a\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0to the FDA requesting that the agency\u00a0\u201ccontinue to conduct oversight\u201d of\u00a0Aid Access<\/a>. But while the FDA has seized or shut down websites illegally dispensing other drugs, it appears to be\u00a0dragging its feet<\/a>\u00a0in shutting down websites illegally distributing the abortion pill.\u00a0A\u00a0lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0filed in the case suggests the Aid Access abortion combipack\u00a0is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company marketed by DKT International.<\/p>\n

Honeybee Health previously\u00a0signed<\/a> Planned Parenthood’s Business for Birth Control pledge to “guarantee employee birth control coverage and to support policies that protect reproductive health care access for all workers.” The phrase “reproductive health care” is a well-known and often used euphemism for abortion among abortion supporters. According to one\u00a0Reddit user<\/a>, Honeybee Health has been filling prescriptions for drugs like misoprostol for Planned Parenthood for at least several months.<\/p>\n

Honeybee Health stated that it “does not prescribe the medications and does not technically sell mifepristone; rather, the pharmacy stores and distributes the medication to patients only for certified prescribers.” The pharmacy can only fill prescriptions submitted by a Danco-certified prescriber directly to Honeybee Health, which “will then process and ship the medication in addition to providing further guidance during the process to the patient,” they wrote.<\/p>\n

The abortion pill comprises\u00a040%<\/a>\u00a0of all reported abortions annually, with Planned Parenthood committing nearly half. Since the abortion pill\u2019s U.S.\u00a0approval<\/a>\u00a0in 2000,\u00a0Live Action News has documented the tragic death of\u00a0millions<\/a>\u00a0of preborn children and dozens of women, as well as thousands<\/a> of adverse effects from the abortion pill, estimated<\/a> to gross $200 million in sales for the industry. In addition, Live Action News has documented multiple financial conflicts of interest<\/a> surrounding organizations, studies, and clinical trials connected to this dangerous drug regimen.<\/p>\n

Editor’s Note: FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in women who took mifepristone. As of June 30, 2021, there were reports of 26 deaths of women associated with mifepristone since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the womb, such as in the fallopian tubes) resulting in death; and several cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis), including some that were fatal. The adverse events cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone because of concurrent use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, co-existing medical conditions, and information gaps about patient health status and clinical management of the patient.
