{"id":231916,"date":"2020-10-02T12:45:31","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T17:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=231916"},"modified":"2022-04-21T07:02:01","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T12:02:01","slug":"abortion-industry-financial-conflicts-interest-politicians-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-financial-conflicts-interest-politicians-media\/","title":{"rendered":"The abortion industry&#8217;s conflicts of interest should concern politicians and media as much as in other industries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Recently, pro-abortion Senator Elizabeth Warren noted in a Congressional hearing on the COVID-19 vaccine that financial conflicts of interest in the pharmaceutical industry are &#8220;a real problem,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d2fh-Au-2tE&amp;t=109m8s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stating<\/a>, &#8220;If federal officials stand to gain financially from certain COVID vaccines, and not from others, then Americans might reasonably worry that the vaccine was pushed for personal profit and not because it was best for our health.&#8221; She went on to state that &#8220;&#8230; [f]inancial conflicts are a real problem in the drug and vaccine development process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Financial conflicts of interest should always be pointed out, but when it comes to abortion, this rarely happens.\u00a0The abortion industry is constantly claiming that the abortion pill is safe \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cecile-richards-abortion-pill-safer\/\">so safe<\/a> that it <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-fights-back-acog-abortion-pill-safety\/\">doesn&#8217;t need any FDA safeguards<\/a>, and should <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/private-abortion-soft-pedals-dangerous-at-home\/\">even be sold over-the-counter<\/a>. But these claims are often made by people with potential financial conflicts of interest who could be motivated by profit rather than actual safety, and pro-abortion politicians and the media fail to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0the early 1990\u2019s, Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/e_ZDQKq2F08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summoned<\/a>\u00a0tobacco industry executives to answer claims surrounding the safety of nicotine after RJ Reynolds and others commissioned and financed studies to convince the public that smoking was not dangerous. An expert in a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/c25mqFtg6AA\">video<\/a> from\u00a0Stanford Medicine states,\u00a0\u201cThey used pseudoscience&#8230; and very often they quoted scientific studies that were completely invalid. Often, they were paid for by the industry to make a specific point rather than to ask a question. These were very simplistically put out as scientific findings about the safety of their tobacco product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If it is possible for conflicts of interest to exist within the tobacco and vaccine industries as has been claimed, surely the same is possible with the abortion industry.<\/p>\n<p>The abortion pill has long been shrouded in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-secrecy-abortion-pill-transparency-needed-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secrecy<\/a>, yet what we do know is that there is a great deal of money to be made from the drug, with\u00a0the industry <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/industry-making-killing-abortion-pill-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> to gross nearly $200 million annually in abortion pill sales\u00a0\u2014 twice as much money as initially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-secrecy-women-deserve-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">projected<\/a>. Planned Parenthood alone has taken in approximately half of those sales.\u00a0Live Action News previously <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/follow-money-people-abortion-safe-financial-reasons\/\">exposed the ties<\/a> between study funders\/researchers to organizations funded by abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories or its investors. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB968103355754057093\"> Buffett<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\"> Packard<\/a>\u00a0Foundations along with billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everycrsreport.com\/files\/20010223_RL30866_c6c423f682c56ed7c586755595c02d5202ddf6bd.pdf\"> George Soros<\/a>&#8216; Open Society Foundations were <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-pushing-abortion-pill-access-gain\/\">original investors<\/a> in Danco.)<\/p>\n<p>It was the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eugenics-founded<\/a> Population Council that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/archive\/news\/2006\/NRL07\/BuffettDonation.html\">brought<\/a> the abortion pill into the U.S. and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-secrecy-abortion-pill-transparency-needed-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set up<\/a> Danco, and the Council oversaw clinical trials of the abortion pill as well, setting up a system through which it would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/whos-making-millions-sale-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receive<\/a>\u00a0royalties from its sales. The\u00a0Population Council is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/search\/grants\/?query=Population%20Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a>\u00a0by the same billionaire pro-abortion philanthropists who seeded Danco (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/476032365-susan-thompson-buffett-foundation\/?query=Population%20Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffett<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/942278431-david-and-lucile-packard-foundation\/?query=Population%20Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Packard<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/search\/grants\/?query=Population%20Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">others<\/a>\u00a0listed below):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/562618866-bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation\/?query=Population%20Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/237093598-john-d-and-catherine-t-macarthur-foundation-consolidated\/?query=population%20council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MacArthur Foundation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/941655673-william-and-flora-hewlett-foundation\/?query=POpulation%20Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hewlett Foundation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/131684331-ford-foundation\/?query=population%20council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ford Foundation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/381359264-wk-kellogg-foundation\/?query=population%20council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kellogg Foundation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB968103355754057093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conduct<\/a> clinical trials in the 1990s for the abortion pill\u2019s FDA approval, the\u00a0Buffett Foundation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/2000\/10\/12\/drugs-us-marketer-remains-elusive\/8b7b732b-0f23-4c96-9051-714cd3d9f6f8\/?utm_term=.6aa5bb53d0fe\">gave<\/a>\u00a0at least $2 million in interest-free loans to the Population Council. The Packard Foundation also gave\u00a0Danco\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Packard_MIR_2015OCT51.pdf\">$14.2 million<\/a>\u00a0investment in 1996 and\u00a0is now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-investor-millions-generic-company\/\">investing<\/a>\u00a0millions in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-die-abortion-pill-fda-generic\/\">GenBioPro<\/a>, Inc., a\u00a0company\u00a0the FDA\u00a0approved in 2019\u00a0to manufacture a generic version of the abortion pill.\u00a0Packard would go on to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gynuity.org\/donors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fund<\/a>\u00a0Gynuity Health Projects<b>,<\/b>\u00a0which is currently conducting abortion pill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-trial-expands-thwart-fda-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trials<\/a>\u00a0and a number of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-funded-abortion-pill-investor-buffett-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a>\u00a0with the goal of pill expansion.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Gynuity, Dr. Daniel Grossman is behind several abortion pill <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ProvidedDocs\/57\/NCT03320057\/Prot_000.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trials<\/a> sponsored by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and is regularly cited by the media which fails to note any conflicts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gynuity Health Projects\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gynuity is conducting\u00a0an expanding <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-trial-expands-thwart-fda-safety\/\" rel=\"noopener\">TelAbortion<\/a> clinical trial in the U.S. while receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/5aa1b2xfmfh2e2mk03kk8rsx-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/18_NAF_Form_990_-_PD.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funding<\/a> from National Abortion Federation (NAF), the nation&#8217;s largest abortion membership organization. Gynuity&#8217;s founder and President,\u00a0Beverly Winikoff, serves on NAF&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prochoice.org\/about\/annual-reports\/2018-annual-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">board<\/a>. NAF is\u00a0funded by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/476032365-susan-thompson-buffett-foundation\/?query=national%20abortion%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffett<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/national-abortion-federation-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Packard<\/a>\u00a0Foundations and was at one time directly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20051003195946\/http:\/\/www.prochoice.org\/pubs_research\/publications\/downloads\/about_naf\/annual_report_2001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a> by Danco. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/476032365-susan-thompson-buffett-foundation\/?query=gynuity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffett<\/a> and Packard Foundations also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gynuity.org\/donors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fund<\/a>\u00a0Gynuity, financing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-funded-abortion-pill-investor-buffett-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> which are used to convince the public that abortion is safe.<\/p>\n<p>Winikoff served on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.societyfp.org\/_documents\/annual_report2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">board<\/a> of the Society of Family Planning (SFP) whose\u00a0official journal, <em>Contraception<\/em>, publishes <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposed-conflicts-interest-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> on alleged safety of the abortion pill. SFP was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(15)30069-X\/pdf\">founded<\/a>\u00a0with a \u201cgenerous contribution\u201d from Packard and <a href=\"http:\/\/990s.foundationcenter.org\/990pf_pdf_archive\/476\/476032365\/476032365_201612_990PF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receives<\/a> millions from the Buffett Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>During the time <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/expand-access-abortion-pill-tied-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gynuity<\/a> abortion pill trials were conducted, the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gynuity.org\/donors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received<\/a> financial support from\u00a0Ibis Reproductive Health. Ibis was for years also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200130190128\/https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\">funded<\/a>\u00a0directly by Danco.\u00a0After Live Action News exposed this financial conflict of interest,\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200130190128\/http:\/\/www.ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funding connections<\/a> were suddenly scrubbed\u00a0from Ibis&#8217;s website. He is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(20)30323-1\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">member<\/a> of the Editorial Board of the Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-studies-funding-media-ignore\/\"><em>Contraception<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(mentioned above in connection with Winikoff) where he publishes his abortion studies.<\/p>\n<p>Grossman&#8217;s trials are sponsored by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Both the Packard and Buffett Foundations\u00a0have <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190613012041\/https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/institutional-research-academic-planning\/_files\/non-profit-research-funding.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invested<\/a> in the University of California (UC) system. In past years, Buffett <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190613012041\/https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/institutional-research-academic-planning\/_files\/non-profit-research-funding.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave<\/a> $78 million to UC \u2014 and according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/18\/magazine\/18abortion-t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>, is the primary financier of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/paying-millions-abortion-training-taxpayers\/\">Bixby Center\u2019s<\/a> Ryan Residency Program at UCSF, which trains abortionists, and where <a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/daniel-grossman-md-facog\">Grossman<\/a> works.<\/p>\n<p>Grossman is currently Senior Director at Ibis Reproductive Health.\u00a0Since <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141013025357\/http:\/\/www.ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, while Grossman was <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141013021502\/http:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/about-us\/staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">listed<\/a> as VP of Research, Ibis was directly funded by abortion pill manufacturer Danco. Danco supported Ibis in the years that followed as well, when Grossman became director and began to publish his abortion pill trials. Again, when Live Action News uncovered this conflict of interest, the connection to Danco was scrubbed\u00a0from Ibis&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p>While conducting trials on the abortion pill, Grossman served on organizations that lobby for abortion (NAF and NARAL Pro-Choice America). In 2019, after Live Action News exposed Grossman&#8217;s ties to NARAL, he suddenly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrDGrossman\/status\/1177407636263845888\">announced<\/a> his retirement from the group&#8217;s board. Grossman still\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prochoice.org\/about-naf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serves<\/a> on NAF\u2019s board and has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191003021624\/https:\/\/www.wholewomanshealthalliance.org\/about\/\">served<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWHAlliance\/status\/1092894638036475905\">board<\/a> of the Whole Woman\u2019s Health Alliance abortion chain.<\/p>\n<p>Grossman is also the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/staff-members\/daniel-grossman\">director<\/a> of UCSF&#8217;s Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/regents-of-the-university-of-california-san-francisco-4\/\">funded<\/a> by Packard. ANSIRH <a href=\"https:\/\/workbook.pressbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publishes<\/a> workbooks on abortion training. This curriculum was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/training\/training\/teach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">established<\/a>\u00a0with financial help from Packard and openly\u00a0promotes self-managed (DIY) abortion, illegal abortion pill websites, and later gestational limits, all in direct violation of the FDA&#8217;s safety protocols. The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-manufacturer-training-flouts-fda\/\">curriculum<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/workbook.pressbooks.com\/front-matter\/acknowledgments-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supported<\/a>\u00a0by NAF, Gynuity, ANSIRH, Planned Parenthood, the Society of Family Planning, Danco, and others. The curriculum\u2019s website also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/workbook.pressbooks.com\/front-matter\/advisory-committee-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admits<\/a>\u00a0that it \u201creceives unrestricted educational grant funding from Danco, LLC,\u201d and has for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachtraining.org\/trainingworkbook\/Early-Abortion-Training-Workbook-2016-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the abortion pill&#8217;s U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-dangerous-safety-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approval<\/a> in 2000, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/112118\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">millions<\/a>\u00a0of preborn children and\u00a0<em>at least<\/em>\u00a024 women have tragically died. Despite the secrecy surrounding the drug originally known as RU-486 (mifepristone), neither the media nor any politician has fully investigated these glaring financial conflicts of interest. These conflicts lend support to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/pro-life-groups-ask-fda-to-pull-dangerous-abortion-pill-declare-it-a-public-health-hazard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call<\/a>\u00a0to remove mifepristone and its approved generics used to end early pregnancy from the U.S. market.<\/p>\n<h6>Editor&#8217;s Note: FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in women who took mifepristone. As of June 30, 2021, there were reports of 26 deaths of women associated with mifepristone since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the womb, such as in the fallopian tubes) resulting in death; and several cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis), including some that were fatal. The adverse events cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone because of concurrent use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, co-existing medical conditions, and information gaps about patient health status and clinical management of the patient.
