Forty years ago today, the most restrictive population control policy in history was born. On September 25, 1980, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party sent a letter to all party members explaining China’s One Child Policy<\/a>. While in the 1970s, families had been limited to two children, the newly introduced policy narrowed that allowance to just one child, ushering in decades of abuses, death, heartache, and other unintended consequences. It was the most restrictive population control policy in history.<\/p>\n

Because it is widely believed that the United Nations Population Fund<\/a> (UNFPA) has been\u00a0complicit<\/a> in implementing China’s oppressive population control policy, the Trump administration cut off funding to the UNFPA. The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is likewise believed to have partnered<\/a> with the China Family Planning Association (CFPA) as far back as 1983. The IPPF website still glowingly features the CFPA<\/a>, despite the growing outcry against the human rights abuses caused by China’s draconian policies.<\/p>\n

Families who violate the One Child Policy find themselves facing any number of penalties, which could be from something as minor as a fine, to something as horrific as forced abortion. Chinese society places higher value on sons than daughters, and many parents have engaged in sex-selective abortion, leading to a shocking gender imbalance<\/a>, with men far outnumbering women.<\/p>\n
