{"id":231426,"date":"2020-09-22T16:40:21","date_gmt":"2020-09-22T21:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=231426"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:33:37","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:33:37","slug":"canadian-mp-end-sex-selective-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canadian-mp-end-sex-selective-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian MP calls for end to sex-selective abortion in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/mp-calls-for-end-to-sex-selective-abortion-in-canada\/\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) A bill seeking to ban sex-selective abortion is gaining momentum in Canada, ahead of International Day of the Girl on 11 October.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jupiterx-post-content clearfix\">\n<p>Introduced in February, by Cathy Wagantall MP, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parl.ca\/DocumentViewer\/en\/43-1\/bill\/C-233\/first-reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sex Selective Abortion Act<\/a> would prohibit medical professionals from performing abortions \u201cknowing that the abortion is sought solely on the grounds of the child\u2019s genetic sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Yorkton-Melville MP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathaywagantall.ca\/mp_wagantall_tables_the_sex_selective_abortion_act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>: <em>\u201cin a country which seeks to foster equality between men and women, the practice of using abortion for sex selection needs to be prohibited\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This bill represents the <a href=\"https:\/\/bccatholic.ca\/news\/canada\/bill-to-ban-sex-selective-abortion-finds-support-in-b-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">third time<\/a> in the past eight years that MPs have attempted to ban sex-selective in Canada. The last attempt was put forward by Wagantall in 2016, but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Members\/en\/votes\/42\/1\/131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defeated<\/a> in the House of Commons by a vote of 209-76.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/grandinmedia.ca\/saskatchewan-mp-presses-for-real-debate-on-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to Wagantall<\/a> and a poll in the National Post, the difficulties the bills have faced is not due to a lack of public support, but rather parliamentarians on all sides being unwilling to discuss and debate laws regarding abortion.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCanadians of nearly all beliefs are united on this issue, with 84 percent stating that sex-selective abortion should be illegal,\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/bccatholic.ca\/news\/canada\/bill-to-ban-sex-selective-abortion-finds-support-in-b-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is reasonable common ground that every Member of Parliament must thoughtfully consider.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf just one girl is aborted simply because of her sex, parliamentarians must act.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing support in British Columbia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Yorkton-Melville MP was joined by MPs Tamara Jensen and Tako Van Popta at <a href=\"https:\/\/bccatholic.ca\/news\/canada\/bill-to-ban-sex-selective-abortion-finds-support-in-b-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pink Flag Display events<\/a> to raise awareness of sex-selective abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The three events, which displayed hundreds of pink flags to represent missing female births, were arranged to show support of the bill in alliance with <a href=\"https:\/\/defendgirls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DefendGirls.com<\/a>, an initiatve of pro-life group We Need a Law.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tamarajansenofficial\/photos\/pcb.2071395739671908\/2071395476338601\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jensen<\/a> posted photos of the event commenting, \u201cI believe politicians of all political stripes should be willing to stand up for women and girls, and oppose this practice!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since amending its abortion law in 1988, sex-selective abortion has become a major issue in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3281173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describes<\/a> how <em>\u201ceasy access to abortion and advances in prenatal sex determination have combined to make Canada a haven for parents who would terminate female fetuses in favour of having sons\u2026\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U2H3ZDnBtuw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-selection-abortion-gendercide-how-okay\/\">If aborting girls for sex-selection is wrong, then how is killing them for other reasons okay?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A global issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sex-selective abortion is a well-documented problem in <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/sex-selective-abortions-in-india-could-lead-to-the-abortion-of-5-million-girls-over-the-next-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">countries around the world<\/a>, resulting in highly skewed sex ratios.<\/p>\n<p>Despite laws banning pre-natal sex detection and sex-selective abortion in India, it is estimated that 6.8 million girls will be aborted between 2017 and 2030.<\/p>\n<p>This is in addition to a report from India\u2019s Government that revealed an estimated 63 million women were already \u201cmissing\u201d from the country\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence of sex-selective abortions has been found in the Australian territory of Victoria, which introduced abortion on request in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Following the law change in Victoria, Dr Mark Hobart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2449568\/Doctor-Mark-Hobart-struck-refusing-abortion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was investigated<\/a> by the Medical Board of Victoria for failing to refer a woman for a sex-selective abortion. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/could-gender-selective-abortions-be-happening-in-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian broadcaster SBS<\/a> revealed there are higher numbers of boys than girls being born in some ethnic communities in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ije\/article\/47\/6\/2025\/5057663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent study<\/a> from La Trobe University, analysing more than a million births in Victoria, suggests some parents could be aborting unborn female babies in order to have a son.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sex-selective abortion in the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the UK, shadow Minister Naz Shah has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-45497454\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> for the Government to stop the misuse of Non-invasive Prenatal Test (NiPT) after evidence emerged they were being used to abort pregnancies based on gender.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour MP said: <em>\u201cThe government needs to look into this exploitative practice and enforce appropriate restrictions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, Ms Shah is presumably okay with disability-selective abortions as she also said: <em>\u201cNIPT screenings should be used for their intended purpose, to screen for serious conditions and Down\u2019s syndrome.\u201d<\/em>Polling, conducted by Savanta ComRes, <a href=\"https:\/\/comresglobal.com\/polls\/where-do-they-stand-abortion-survey\/\">showed<\/a> 89% of the general population and 91% of women agree that gender-selective abortion should be explicitly banned by the law.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article was published at <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/mp-calls-for-end-to-sex-selective-abortion-in-canada\/\">Right to Life UK<\/a> and is reprinted here with permission.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Right to Life UK) A bill seeking to ban sex-selective abortion is gaining momentum in Canada, ahead of International Day of the Girl on 11 October.
