Tragically, even today, these eugenic atrocities are still being alleged. Just this month, charges have surfaced from a whistleblower alleging that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-falsely-blame-pro-lifers-ice-forcibly-sterilized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced sterilizations<\/a>\u00a0are being perpetrated against immigrant women in the custody of the\u00a0Georgia Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center. These claims are now being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>Silence on eugenics potentially leads to more victims, and as it has been said, those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.\u00a0Exposing the thought processes surrounding eugenics is important, because it is still occurring today in many forms.<\/p>\n<p>One historic yet rarely mentioned purveyor of eugenics was Cordelia Scaife May, a financier of many organizations including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eugenics founded<\/a>\u00a0Population Council, which was responsible for bringing the abortion pill to the United States. (Photo by Bettmann Archive\/Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/14\/us\/anti-immigration-cordelia-scaife-may.html?searchResultPosition=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0released by\u00a0the New York Times last year, it was alleged that\u00a0a former president of the\u00a0Population Council once accused May of favoring compulsory sterilization to limit birth rates in developing countries. Whether those associations helped form her views on sterilization or not is unclear, but what is clear is that May, like so many others within those groups, held an elitist view centered in eugenics.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropydaily.com\/newly-unearthed-documents-reveal-heiress-cordelia-scaife-mays-philanthropic-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philanthropy Daily<\/a>, May began her career as a supporter of Margaret Sanger. She became a generous supporter of Planned Parenthood, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/nation\/la-xpm-2013-jul-25-la-na-immigration-birdlady-20130725-story.html\">even the LA Times admitted<\/a> in &#8220;its early days supported population control.&#8221;\u00a0Planned Parenthood&#8217;s past is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-connections-to-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steeped<\/a> in racist eugenics, and recently, hundreds of Planned Parenthood staffers came forward to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-employees-accuse-racism\/\">expose<\/a>\u00a0the corporation&#8217;s current racism,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-systemic-racism-white-supremacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stating<\/a>\u00a0that it \u201chas a history and a present steeped in white supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1963, May signed on to a full-page letter in The Pittsburgh Press urging President John F. Kennedy to engage the federal government in \u201ca greatly accelerated program for limiting world population,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/local\/city\/2019\/06\/24\/colcom-foundation-cordelia-scaife-may-population-environment-immigration-pittsburgh\/stories\/201906230016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the Post Gazette.\u00a0\u201cIn the next 15 short years there will be still another billion people if the present rate of increase continues \u2014 most of them in countries now receiving U.S. aid,\u201d the several dozen signers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>By 1968, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popcouncil.org\/about\/timeline#ourHistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard Berelson<\/a>\u00a0took the helm of Population Council as its fourth president.\u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/beyond-fp-berleson.jpg\">year later<\/a>, he\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uscl.info\/edoc\/doc.php?doc_id=83&amp;action=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a>\u00a0an article suggesting that if voluntary methods of birth control were not successful, it may become necessary for the government to put a \u201cfertility control agent\u201d in the water supplies of \u201curban\u201d neighborhoods. Harvey&#8217;s recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanharves\/status\/1302917067599785984?s=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter thread<\/a>\u00a0claimed a VP once expressed concerns about African immigration into Europe.\u00a0Harvey\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanharves\/status\/1302919426010804225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cAt a donor event a VP made this case for family planning: \u2018There\u2019s widespread concern about 4bn people in Africa: poverty, environment, famines\u2026 With 1bn Africans, immigration is more than [Europe] thinks they can handle. With 4bn people it will be a much bigger problem.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanharves\/status\/1302918672827125762\">Harvey<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanharves\/status\/1269060442044825601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>, &#8220;My former employer is an INGO that was supported by $20M+ in donations from a white nationalist until the mid-70s and whose senior leaders advocate population reduction in sub-Saharan Africa to combat climate change. (NARAL also recently came under fire for employees&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-employees-accuse-abortion-organization-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegations<\/a> of racism.)\u00a0Hardin told May that he felt the media was perhaps noticing \u201cthe predominant Latinity of apprehended criminals\u201d in California and that &#8220;maybe the blacks are less than saintly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1971, The Gadsden Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?id=XqsfAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=mdYEAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=837,222142&amp;dq=garrett+hardin+planned+parenthood&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a>\u00a0Hardin\u2019s comments on coercive abortion and sterilization: \u201cLet\u2019s call it X number. Now, when a woman goes in to have that X child, she would be advised that she has the alternative of sterilization, if she so desires. But after that X child, X plus 1, she would no longer have an alternative. She would by law be required to have an abortion and sterilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea of sterilization as punishment is unrealistic,&#8221; Hardin added, &#8220;But if we think of it in fact as helping the woman, the family and the world, sterilization doesn\u2019t seem so bad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hardin also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2003-sep-20-me-hardin20-story.html\">believed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201c[i]n the case of overpopulation&#8230; the coercion could take the form of China\u2019s one-child law, or regulations offering tax credits only for the first two children in a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-two-child-limit-poor-forcing-abortions\/\">INHUMANE: New UK \u2018two child limit\u2019 targets low-income families, forcing them into abortions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a01973 letter to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\">Population Council<\/a> from May\u2019s office also noted her support for abortion. \u201c[W]e feel confident that the leadership position of the council in the population field can be used to greatly accelerate the availability of abortion services worldwide on an \u2018abortion upon request\u2019 basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>\u00a0documented how Population Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/archive\/news\/2006\/NRL07\/BuffettDonation.html\">brought<\/a>\u00a0the abortion pill to the U.S. and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20010202214900\/http:\/earlyoptionpill.com\/history.php3\">set up<\/a>\u00a0the pill\u2019s manufacturer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-secrecy-women-deserve-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danco Laboratories, LLC<\/a>, and today, eugenics-connected groups continue to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/expand-access-abortion-pill-tied-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fund<\/a>\u00a0the expansion of the abortion pill. In stark contrast to Sanger, she did <em>not<\/em> blame population growth on poor women or the Catholic Church. \u201cThe increase in our population,\u201d May declared, \u201cis not being caused by the unwanted children of the poorest women in the United States or by the opposition of the Roman Catholic Church. It is caused by 40 million middle-upper class women who have all the children they wanted.\u201d Quoting Kingsley Davis, she concluded, \u201cIf having too many children were considered a crime&#8230; we would have no qualms about taking freedom away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, in 1976,\u00a0May told newly elected Population Council president George\u00a0Zeidenstein that the U.S. should seal its border with Mexico.
