According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/stories\/a-chicago-group-uses-billboards-to-highlight-that-abortion-is-covered-by-medicaid-in-illinois\/d304b606-2966-402a-aa70-882944525264\">WBEZ<\/a>, Chicago&#8217;s NPR affiliate, the green and white billboards read, &#8220;Abortion is Healthcare. It&#8217;s Covered by Illinois Medicaid. We&#8217;re Here to Help,&#8221; and list the Chicago Abortion Fund&#8217;s website. The six signs statewide \u2014 including three on high-traffic interstates in the Chicago area as well as two in Peoria and one in Champaign (the location of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) \u2014 are scheduled to remain posted through September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3D2700359646919248%26id%3D2278110585810825&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=552&amp;height=513&amp;appId\" width=\"552\" height=\"513\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/womens-health-policy\/issue-brief\/the-hyde-amendment-and-coverage-for-abortion-services\/\">A majority of states<\/a> align their own Medicaid programs with the federal Hyde Amendment guidelines, and do\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>cover abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or the life of the mother. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/opinion\/commentary\/ct-perspec-mcqueary-rauner-abortion-taxpayer-20171001-story.html\">in 2018<\/a>, former Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner, a pro-abortion Republican, signed into law House Bill 40, which allowed taxpayer funding to directly subsidize abortion through the state&#8217;s Medicaid program. As expected, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dph.illinois.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/illinois-abortion-statistics-2018.pdf\">abortion numbers rose significantly<\/a>\u00a0following the passage of the new law.<\/p>\n<p>As Eric Scheidler of the Chicago-based Pro-Life Action League noted in a Facebook post, abortions among Illinois residents in 2018 increased by over 8% from just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dph.illinois.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/publicationsoppsillinois-abortion-statistics-2017.pdf\">the year before<\/a>, despite a decreased population and declining national abortion numbers. 2019 statistics have not yet been released by the Illinois Department of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this new billboard campaign makes clear that abortion advocates aren&#8217;t sitting on their haunches enjoying their &#8220;gains.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v8.0\" nonce=\"RkSdbuDQ\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EricScheidlerProLife\/posts\/635042830405175\" data-width=\"750\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EricScheidlerProLife\/posts\/635042830405175\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\">\n<p>I&#039;ve been poring over the Illinois abortion stats for 2018, which were just released today. Scheidler<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EricScheidlerProLife\/posts\/635042830405175\">Friday, January 17, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The campaign is just the latest in a series of events leading Scheidler to call Illinois &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-illinois-abortion-dumping-ground-midwest\/\">the abortion dumping ground of the midwest<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As WBEZ noted, &#8220;Women travel from all over the country to have abortions in Illinois. As neighboring states restrict abortion access, Illinois is seen as a haven that protects abortion access.&#8221; In the same year that abortions among Illinois residents increased by nearly 9%, 5,668 women traveled to Illinois from out-of-state for abortions. (Compare this to 2,970 abortions on out-of-state residents just four years prior. That&#8217;s a 52% increase.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/illinois-house-passes-abortion-worse-new-york\/\">\u2018Dark day\u2019: Illinois governor signs abortion bill far worse than New York\u2019s<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Late-term abortions (committed at 20 weeks gestation or later), which are <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/who-where-why-answers-late-term-abortion\/\">opposed<\/a> by a majority of Americans, also increased in the state by <strong>80%<\/strong> between 2017 and 2018. While the abortion industry attempts to explain away late-term abortions as a myth propagated by pro-life &#8220;extremists&#8221; to gain sympathy for our cause, the reality is that at least 664 children died from late-term abortions in 2018 in Illinois alone.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, state legislators passed a law cementing Illinois&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/dispatch\/how-illinois-became-an-abortion-rights-haven\">&#8220;abortion rights haven<\/a>&#8221; status. The law calls abortion &#8220;a fundamental right&#8221; and explicitly reads, &#8220;a fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent rights.&#8221; According to a previous Live Action news <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/illinois-house-passes-abortion-worse-new-york\/\">report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The new Illinois RHA does away with the state\u2019s ban on partial-birth abortion, ends the need for licensing abortion facilities by the state, allows non-physicians to commit abortions, and allows for\u00a0abortion at any time, for any reason, including for reasons of \u201chealth\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/against-new-york-law-roe\/\">which may include \u201cphysical, emotional, psychological, familial\u201d<\/a> or any other type of \u201chealth\u201d the abortionist will accept. And abortionists have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nyt-abortionist-claiming-pregnancy-kills-abortion-saves\/\">made clear<\/a> that they believe <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-not-being-pregnant-medical-abortion\/\">the very state of being pregnant<\/a> and not wanting to be is reason enough to commit an abortion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Democratic Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/illinois-house-passes-abortion-worse-new-york\/\">called the state<\/a> a &#8220;beacon of hope&#8221; for those who believe in &#8220;women&#8217;s fundamental rights&#8221; when he signed the controversial bill into law, the fact is that Illinois has become an abortion haven, and a taxpayer-funded one at that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a> for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new billboard campaign organized by the Chicago Abortion Fund is drawing attention to Illinois Medicaid&#8217;s taxpayer-funded coverage of &#8220;abortion services&#8221; for state residents.
